Lord of the White Field
Cost: $0.00
Level: 6

First Session: Wednesday -- March 16th, 2011 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 3 sessions

Description:
Dungeon Mag adventure. This should be on anyone's list of "Best of 4E". It is one of the few 4E modules that actually evokes a mood.
Takes 2-3 sessions to play through. Characters should earn enough experience to gain a level.

In “Lord of the White Field,” the characters navigate the ghoul-haunted ruins of the town of Hampstead while seeking answers to its sudden destruction and a means to prevent the terror from spreading. The harrowing journey tests their mental and spiritual endurance as much as their physical prowess as they traverse a landscape filled with the ravenous dead.

Apr 1, 2011 11:26 AM - James L: I'd like to chime in on how it seemed Thargus got enjoyment out of all the axe attacks he made against his fellows. Me the player was role-playing Thargus's madness and bloodlust, but on the inside I was crying at causing so much pain.
Apr 1, 2011 11:07 AM - Gary: Yeah, post-story script - after healing the copious amounts of wounds he received at the brutal hands of Thargus, Grom unleashes the Rune of Mac-Whip-Ass on Thargus! Awesome last battle! Thanks again John - epic!
Mar 31, 2011 10:31 PM - John McCullough: But you gotta admit, having it be an autohit made the encounter pretty exciting.
Mar 31, 2011 7:47 PM - James L: I do agree, there's no way that power should have been an auto-hit.
Mar 31, 2011 6:51 PM - James L: WotC making an error in the rules! No way, that can't be. Next we'll start thinking there could be more rules mistakes and we'll have to look for them everywhere. We will have to judge for ourselves what is overpowered or not. We can't rely on RAW in the magazine! By the gods!
Mar 31, 2011 6:25 PM - John McCullough: Scott, the power technically doesn't specify that the target makes the attack as a free action... so no limit!

But yeah, that power is broken. I think it was clearly designed as a way for the two big guys in the fight to deal out some extra damage while either healing each other or putting a temp-shield around a minion, but they worded the power in such a way that it became the best power on the board.
Mar 31, 2011 2:55 PM - Kenny P: I had tons of fun! Hope to play with ya'll again soon.

Brian, sorry you missed out. It was a hell of a session.
Mar 31, 2011 1:38 PM - Scott p: monday morning rules lawyering here, but wouldn't each bad guy only get to spam thargus once per round due to the limit on free action attacks?
that battle was awesome.
Mar 31, 2011 12:58 PM - Scott p: the bard and i were worried sick and thargus was lamenting that he couldn't rob your corpse.
Mar 31, 2011 12:57 PM - James L: You missed out on some epic thrashing by Thargus. He was frequently overcome by the emotions of the unquiet spirits. His rage boiled over into frequent attacks on his own allies. All the while his red eyes gleamed greedily while he clutched his new silverware set to his chest.
Mar 31, 2011 12:55 PM - James L: It's ok we forgave you already. We were worried something happened to you.
Mar 31, 2011 12:49 PM - Brian Peters: Wow.... So sorry guys.... For some reason, I thought game day was Thurs... I had an utter brain fart, and mixed up mmy schedule. I am SO sorry for being a no-show, and have already voted myself as such. REALLY sorry, especially to john. I hope it didn't affect the game. Stupid mistake, but all mine :(
Mar 30, 2011 4:29 AM - Brian Peters: Just leafed through The Zombie Survival Guide, and found that these fast moving, jumping undead aren't covered by Max Brooks...
Mar 30, 2011 12:12 AM - John McCullough: You should all bring your lvl 6 chars as well as your level 7 chars. I think you'll be facing at least one encounter before you can take an extended rest.
Mar 30, 2011 12:02 AM - Scott p: alright, i leveled up, watched zombieland and finally downloaded undead nightmare for RDR, i'd like to think i'm ready.
and remember everyone, gang up on one guy, push everyone next to the 1/2orc, provoke from the guys in his aura, and john love to TPK on in the last session.
Mar 28, 2011 1:29 PM - James L: Just like in the movie Back To The Future, Thargus starts fading in and out of reality like his very existence is threatened. Did he die several years ago in the Battle of Harkenwold?
Mar 25, 2011 9:39 PM - John McCullough: Hi all. I've done the math, and you have each earned 2,580 xp. That means you should all bring a leveled up character for next week's game. ding
Mar 25, 2011 8:17 PM - Gary: Remembuuurr, I'm a watchin yoo, ya sharp tooth urk
Mar 24, 2011 9:45 AM - James L: Does all that loot pocketing by Thargus, disqualify him for best team-player? Well he intimidates you into forgetting that!
Mar 24, 2011 9:44 AM - James L: I agree kick ass, some major throat breathing! I'm going to shove something somewhere! Also, please vote, just click the link and log in and you'll see voting buttons.
Mar 24, 2011 12:34 AM - John McCullough: Kickass game tonight, gentlemen. I can't wait to run the thrilling conclusion next week!
Mar 17, 2011 12:17 PM - James L: Here's a 1990 reference from a totally awesome movie "I never killed anybody who didn't deserve it."
Mar 16, 2011 2:18 PM - James L: I can make 80's references all day.
Mar 16, 2011 1:54 PM - Brian Peters: James L: "Killing is my business...and business is good"

So, James... Is it fair to say that you showed up to kick a$$ and chew bubblegum, but you're all out of gum?
Mar 16, 2011 12:48 PM - Kenny P: "Music to my ears."
Mar 16, 2011 12:19 PM - James L: "Killing is my business...and business is good"
Mar 16, 2011 12:14 PM - Brian Peters: - James L: Acquiring Magic Items is not the point of these adventures.

Blasphemy! Ganking critters and gaining loot are the BACKBONE of a campaign! Next, you are going to tell me that ROLEPLAYING and PLOT are important?!? I WILL NOT HEAR such balderdash! Acquiring treasure and XP at every possible opportunity is serious business! I'll kill the innkeeper's daughter if I need those last 45 xp points to level, and I don't care who tries to stop me!...
Mar 16, 2011 12:14 PM - Brian Peters: You treat Dungeons and Dragons as if this is some sort of GAME!... Anyways, Looking forward to tonight, and I'll see you guys later!
Mar 16, 2011 11:55 AM - James L: Acquiring Magic Items is not the point of these adventures. Yes, you start with 100gp that's it, no selling or trading. You can choose all the non-magical gear you want except mounts. I'll have to re-do the ritual rules. For now: you get 1 ritual every time you level. You can cast 1 for free, if you are a bard, you can cast 2 for free per day since that stacks with the 1 bard ritual per day.
Mar 16, 2011 10:59 AM - Kenny P: just to clarify, we only get 100 gold starting gold yes?

are we allowed to trade in a common item for its gold value to buy more non-magical gear and rituals?
Mar 15, 2011 10:42 PM - Scott p: i'd like skald's leather armor +2, iron armbands of power, or warded vambraces, whichever you like.
or just giant piles of gold for that ritual casting bard to make magic items for us. bro i got 50GP on your songblade if you keep pumping out the temps.
Mar 15, 2011 1:31 PM - Brian Peters: Hmmm... interesting and diverse group of characters... Looking forward to this!
Mar 15, 2011 1:24 PM - Kenny P: @JamesL I guess I wasn't prepared to find so few common items among each item category. I never really paid attention to whether an item was common or uncommon, just the level. I'll adjust my character, no problem.
Mar 15, 2011 11:36 AM - James L: Thargus the Destroyer is looking forward to earning some gold, on whatever quest the patrons of the white field feel his axe is worth. Half-Orc Mercenary Knight looking for adventure and to whip his axe through the air at whatever stands before him.
Mar 15, 2011 10:00 AM - James L: kenderKen, did you read the character creation rules, you get one Uncommon item + 3 Common items. Is'nt that enough to get your songblade? Did you want 2 Uncommon items?
Mar 14, 2011 3:22 PM - Kenny P: Wondrous items like magic instruments or bag of holding and ritual scrolls/books. I like rituals.
About the starting equipment, would it be ok if I treated the basic bard's songblade as a common item?
Thanks.
Mar 14, 2011 12:44 PM - KenB: John, any hide armor you think would be really good for an elven ranger and any cool foot slot item. I like surprises. thank you!
Mar 14, 2011 12:13 PM - Brian Peters: I would like auspicious dice and a +5 vorpal blade, please... kthanxbye!
Mar 12, 2011 11:32 PM - John McCullough: And if you are interested, please post two wish list items on the board and I'll work them in if I can.
Mar 12, 2011 11:31 PM - John McCullough: I hope you all are looking forward to this as much as I am. The mod looks like a lot of fun for everybody.
Mar 11, 2011 2:38 PM - Scott p: TANG, aside from being the drink that the astronauts took to the moon, is a law abiding, friendly, optomistic swordmage who loves eladrin and does not stink of rum or have tattoos on his face.
Mar 11, 2011 12:06 PM - Kenny P: I'll keep my options open then and play whatever needs playing. >o<
Mar 11, 2011 11:14 AM - Brian Peters: Scott, what's TANG?
Mar 11, 2011 9:11 AM - Scott p: easy there Ken, I'm only half committed to the bard, I've got a question in to the DM about my character, john are you out there? I sent you a message through meetup, but maybe you don't get those.
Mar 10, 2011 11:13 AM - Kenny P: hmmm, I'm going to change my character to some kind of controller. It's the only role missing from the roster. The bard and runepriest should be enough healing. I'm thinking dwarf doodad, maybe even have him be the runepriests bro? xD Or an old codger of a wizard.
Mar 9, 2011 6:59 PM - James L: don't worry about toes, play whatever you enjoy
Mar 8, 2011 8:26 PM - Brian Peters: I was also thinking of changing... Goliath might be too similar to the Minotaur barbarian I played in my last campaign game... i was thinking about Deva Avenger, which is another striker, but also divine... would that be step on your toes, or affect your decision to play a pally, James?
Mar 8, 2011 4:01 PM - KenB: I say play whatever character you'll have the most fun playing. That said, the description of the game makes it pretty clear there will be undead involved and i don't think it's too much of a stretch that a Paladin character would have heard of the blight and quested to destroy it.
Mar 8, 2011 3:32 PM - James L: Is it metagaming to play a paladin? I have been going back and forth whether to do that or not.
Mar 7, 2011 11:28 PM - John McCullough: Essentials characters are fine with me. It seems they are the way of the future...
Mar 3, 2011 3:35 PM - Brian Peters: As it stands, it looks like doing a themed party is an idea that is out the window... (*sigh....*) If essentials classes are fine, I like strikers, and will do a goliath slayer. If that's ok with the group... but I, as well, am flexible
Mar 3, 2011 11:39 AM - KenB: Play whatever ya like, KenderK. I'll adjust to fill a needed party role. I am, in fact, very flexible as Scott can attest to.
Mar 3, 2011 11:31 AM - Kenny P: I picked a leader because runepriests are not great healers. Ken, if you're going for a warforged striker/defender, I'll make a 'forged chaladin or healbot.
Mar 3, 2011 10:56 AM - KenB: I was thinking Dragonborn Mage, but seeing as we might be leader heavy, I will probably to with a Striker/Defender and they may in fact be Warforged.
Mar 3, 2011 10:49 AM - Kenny P: I'm willing to change my character to a warforged one if the undecideds want to go ahead with a 'forged theme. :P
Mar 3, 2011 10:24 AM - T Michael: James L, all the talk of warforged was attractive to some of us. Where better to have brought Captain Hadrian to life.
Mar 3, 2011 9:58 AM - James L: I'm sure its just scheduling issues. But people could have been scared away by all that talk of Warforged. I know I was scared.
Mar 3, 2011 9:54 AM - Ross H: I'd love to, but the 30th is bad for me as well - out of town. If you do end up shifting the last date to a time I can make it, though, I'm definitely in...
Mar 3, 2011 9:52 AM - Rob R: Damns, still only four for realz. This sounds like an interesting mod. And for those who haven't played with John - he is a very good DM. If my regular game wasn't on wednesday i'd be all over this.
Mar 2, 2011 11:08 AM - John McCullough: Place updated. Even if we don't get 6 people, I will run this for 4.

@T Michael Unfortunately my schedule is not very flexible that week. If we get close to the RSVP cutoff and there are still spots, go ahead and sign up and we could probably work something out. Until then, I'd rather find a full party that can make the proposed dates.
Mar 1, 2011 11:03 PM - T Michael: I could make the 16th and the 23rd, but will be traveling the 30th. If flexible I would love to bring a warforged warlord or cavalier.
Mar 1, 2011 9:43 PM - Graham: arrg wish i didn't have to work on the 23rd =/
Mar 1, 2011 7:57 PM - Brian Peters: Okay, guys... only two more to make this game happen!... Throw your hat and your sword in!
Mar 1, 2011 2:15 PM - KenB: is this game happening at citi?
Mar 1, 2011 9:20 AM - Brian Peters: I'm going to hold of on character selection until we jave six commited players. Then see if there would still be interest in a thematic party...
Feb 28, 2011 4:10 PM - Gary: If everyone who commits still wants to play warforged, i can pretty easily turn my dwarf into one... until then, it's Grom MacMunch!
Feb 28, 2011 11:24 AM - John McCullough: Alright, we've got a runepriest in the party! I have often thought they were poor primary healers, but after playing with one last week I think they are a ton of fun.
Feb 27, 2011 8:52 AM - Brian Peters: Exotic humans? How about cross dressing Vikings?
Feb 26, 2011 12:30 AM - Scott p: while i like the idea of an all warforged divine party, i will say that if you are gonna do a one race party that race should have more than two stat options, and if you are gonna do an all divine party, one might contemplate making sure one of those stats is WIS, or at the very least, one might want to contemplate not violating both of those ideas at once.
i guess a house rule could make that ground up, WIS seems likely as not for the warforged third stat when it comes up, i'd guess static CON
Feb 26, 2011 12:09 AM - John McCullough: I'm a really big fan of humans. They are easily tied for dwarves as my favorite race.
Feb 25, 2011 6:43 PM - Brian Peters: Hey, John!... If James gets a laser, I want flamethrowers!...
Feb 25, 2011 4:50 PM - James L: We could all be human, so exotic!
Feb 25, 2011 3:43 PM - John McCullough: @James warforged mech? too funny. If it doesn't bother anyone else I'll allow it.

center torso, possible crit
Feb 25, 2011 1:28 PM - Gary: My only concern with sticking to a particular race is that they favour certain classes i.e. warforged = str & con based. Not that I'm a hardcore powergamer, just saying...
Feb 25, 2011 1:15 PM - Gary: @James - LOL - I loved the "I am a dick" comment, had me cackling!!
Feb 25, 2011 1:14 PM - Gary: This looks awesome - I'm keen, happy to play a bard and unleash my inner rockstar (because all DnD geeks are closet rockstars)!
Feb 25, 2011 1:02 PM - Brian Peters: You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have rangers with frickin' laser beams shooting out of their bows! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! What do we have?
Feb 25, 2011 12:52 PM - James L: My name will be Madcat Mk IV
Feb 25, 2011 12:51 PM - James L: Can I make a Ranger and reflavor all my attacks as laser beams?
Feb 25, 2011 12:49 PM - Brian Peters: We've thrown down several good ideas...I like the all warforged idea, almost as if the party was CREATEd for a singular purpose. (The "collective") This could enforce team concept and cohesion... A band of 'ghoul terminators'
Feb 24, 2011 4:12 PM - James L: Honestly I would prefer an all Martial party.
Feb 24, 2011 4:12 PM - James L: or just even all Fey (Eladrin, Gnome, Drow, Wilden, Elf) or races of Stone (Dwarf, Goliath, )
Feb 24, 2011 4:07 PM - Graham: Shadar-Kai would be fun!
Feb 24, 2011 3:58 PM - James L: What about all Shadar-Kai or all Revenant?
Feb 24, 2011 3:56 PM - Ross H: I'm definitely in the "seems cool" camp, but also certainly not committed to anything. I love the idea of a themed party, and this seems like a cool theme - but I'm down for whatever will yield a fun game that people are happy with.
Feb 24, 2011 2:09 PM - James L: I should apologize, work is hectic and I am consumed with negative thoughts, Then I have access to a place say them in public. adds up to bad vibes
Feb 24, 2011 2:08 PM - Rob R: Seriously though, it looks like a few people have said playing a warforged and / or divine party is cool. But I don't see too many people insisting. This still looks like the "kicking around ideas stage."
Feb 24, 2011 2:07 PM - Rob R: James, did you forget to eat your snickers? : )
Feb 24, 2011 2:07 PM - Kenny P: How about expanding race to include subtypes as well? ie constructs/created, fey origin, goblinoid, etc. Then we'd all have something in common without being the same.
Feb 24, 2011 1:17 PM - James L: Well if the party goes all Warforged I will not play a Warforged because I am a dick and don't like things imposed on me. Will you kick me out?
Feb 24, 2011 1:01 PM - Rob R: This way the party can go with the great roleplaying hook and the DM still has a adventure that doesn't get neutered from jump.
Feb 24, 2011 1:00 PM - Kenny P: @KenB even so, the character would still be like every other PC in the party. If it's not the racial abilities, it's the similar channel divinities and mostly all radiant powers I'm sure many will pick to counter the undead. Diversity brings versatility imo.
Feb 24, 2011 1:00 PM - Rob R: In game terms - maybe anyone trying to use channel divinity needs to roll a save or the attempt fizzles - losing that action and power as if used. Also maybe all undead get damage resist 5 divine.
Feb 24, 2011 12:58 PM - Rob R: The Ghouls King performs a ritual which will sever anyone's connection to their deity will within the town limits (lasting a year and a day). He then leaves as he has other duties to perform elsewhere.
Feb 24, 2011 12:57 PM - Rob R: Reports have been coming in to Orcus. His spies report thet xxxxxx is sending in a party of adventurers to eradicate his latest accomplishment. So he sends in Doresain, the Ghoul King.
Feb 24, 2011 12:40 PM - Graham: bah I have to work on the 23rd
Feb 24, 2011 12:09 PM - KenB: Even if everyone has different roles?
An Avenger, Paladin, Invoker, and Cleric are all pretty different.
Feb 24, 2011 1:59 AM - Kenny P: I'm fine with a themed party, but do think that all being of the same race AND power source is limiting.
Feb 23, 2011 6:57 PM - John McCullough: A little metagamey, but also thematically appropriate. A fine line to walk... Anyway it's up to you guys. I'm game for either a themed party or a ragtag band of adventurers.
Feb 23, 2011 1:30 PM - James L: C'mon an all divine party in an undead heavy adventure is a little meta-gamey. All divine players have a channel divinity that severely hampers undead
Feb 23, 2011 1:25 PM - Ross H: So, important question though - which deity?
Feb 23, 2011 1:05 PM - Ross H: That could be interesting - could give us all a strong connection (through the church) but not deep individual relationships (all from different eras, etc).
Feb 23, 2011 11:42 AM - John McCullough: Divine warforged idea - the spirits of the church's most powerful heroes of the past have been bound to constructs and animated to deal with a modern-day threat. Thoughts?

@James Is a warforged theme a deal-breaker?
Feb 23, 2011 9:52 AM - Graham: all divine robots programed to crush undead
Feb 23, 2011 9:47 AM - James L: All elves, we'd be so accurate.
Feb 23, 2011 9:47 AM - James L: All robots? Why not all Arcane, or all Divine or all Martial or something like that?
Feb 23, 2011 9:46 AM - Graham: if we were to become a divine automaton collective, this is my choice.
Feb 22, 2011 11:36 PM - Jensen: love the warforged created to destroy the undead...
Feb 22, 2011 10:44 PM - John McCullough: Alright, I've switched back to Wednesday nights... seems to please a greater number of people.
Feb 22, 2011 1:29 PM - Kenny P: I'll admit, I'm glad the game is back to its original time slot, even if it's just the first session.
Feb 22, 2011 10:01 AM - Ross H: But... I would *love* to be a machine created to crush the undead. So very much.
Feb 22, 2011 10:00 AM - Ross H: Argh, sorry to do this just after you changed the times, but I just noticed when I went to calendar it that I'd be out of town for the last session :/ Sorry to be a pain, feel free to just schedule without me. Could do three Fridays if started the week earlier... but now I'm just being obnoxious :P
Feb 22, 2011 9:58 AM - John McCullough: Moved game to Fridays. Also, a party of divine warforged, built solely to destroy armies of the undead sounds like an AWESOME idea.
Feb 21, 2011 11:37 PM - Ross H: @John generally, yes.
Feb 21, 2011 11:08 PM - John McCullough: @Ross Are Fridays better?
Feb 21, 2011 9:37 PM - Ross H: Weds are in general not great for me... Probably will sit this out if that's when it ends up being. But sounds fun - based on the description, sounds like a deity-oriented party (out to cleanse evil/take out evil competition) could be a good fit?
Feb 20, 2011 7:52 PM - John McCullough: Sorry guys... fixed the rsvp date.
Feb 20, 2011 7:33 PM - Graham: sounds like fun. All Warforged?
btw can't RSVP. The date has passed
Feb 20, 2011 5:35 PM - Brian Peters: i am TOTALLY into running a themed party. I think I suggested that for the last mod we ran with you as DM...(Just not all minotaurs. They have a tendency to accidentally rip people's arms off!)
Feb 20, 2011 12:40 PM - John McCullough: Would people be interested in creating a themed party? Like, all dwarves or all worship a particular deity or all use the same power source?
Feb 20, 2011 12:39 PM - John McCullough: Wednesday nights work best for me, but I might be able to do other weeknights if there are a lot of conflicts.
