Tomb of Horrors (DM Reward)
Cost: $0.00
Level: 9

First Session: Wednesday -- April 6th, 2011 -- 11:40 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 5 sessions

There are at least 5 versions of Tomb of Horrors
This is the DM Rewards 4E Tomb of Horrors that got sent out in the mail to DCI members in 2010. It is 9th level and will take about 5 sessions to complete. It attempts to be a total conversion of the original 1978 Tomb of Horrors. It is just as deadly as the original. Even if you've only read the original and never played it, play it! It becomes so much more when you are actually in it. This is a thinking person's module.

Somewhere under a lost and lonely hill of grim and foreboding aspect lies a labryinthine crypt. It is filled with terrible traps and not a few strange and ferocious monsters to slay the unwary. It is filled with rich treasures both precious and magical, but in addition to the aforementioned guardians, there is said to be a demi-lich who still wards his final haunt. Only the large and well prepared parties of the bravest and strongest should even consider the attempt to enter this crypt.

All players should make Essentials only characters that are simple to play, and must bring a backup character to the game since their first one may die. The DM should pull no punches.

May 13, 2011 1:16 PM - James L: I just saw David Barton walking around Wall Street. His shirt was open and showed his chest and everything! No joke! We never destroyed his phylactery, he must have reformed!!
May 7, 2011 11:00 AM - Mat T: In hindsight, if I had managed to wait one more round before bringing out my Spirit of Healing, the chest room would have been a lot easier. I just took a look at that last encounter and you were nice to us too John...that skeleton should have come with us on the last teleport. :)
May 6, 2011 10:11 AM - James L: Acererak has our souls!!!! NO!!!!
May 6, 2011 12:36 AM - John McCullough: Wow! Awesome game guys! It was really close at the end. You had a few rounds of really bad luck, and you were stuck in that room with the darts and the skeleton for a long time. I had a great time running this.
May 5, 2011 11:44 PM - Capt_Dan: T.P.K.
I think we could have taken him, if we'd finished earlier I would have lobbied for a do-over...
May 5, 2011 4:17 PM - John McCullough: No problem here. Congrats!
May 5, 2011 3:41 PM - Scott p: i'm starting at seven on the dot with or without any of you. this isn't NAM man, this is DnD there are rules.

or maybe that's actually really convenient for me so no problem.
May 5, 2011 12:08 PM - Capt_Dan: Congratulations! No problem starting at 8, though I'll be there from seven anyway. I have your mini, must have incautiously swept it up on Tuesday...
May 5, 2011 11:03 AM - Mat T: Nope, no halfling mini here. If you need to start at 8, I can do it (though I still can't stay past 11:30 or so).
May 5, 2011 10:54 AM - James L: Also, I have to go to a doctor visit with my wife this afternoon, she is pregnant! Is starting at 8 possible? Or is that a hassle for everyone?
May 5, 2011 10:52 AM - James L: I lost my halfling mini. Did someone pick it up?
May 4, 2011 1:40 PM - Capt_Dan: It is quite a dark and miserable end, but if you find yourself butt naked and in sprinting distance of the exit, and instead you choose to jump into more danger...
May 4, 2011 11:45 AM - James L: At least now you have a story you can tell your grandkids, or at least other D&D players (But don't spoil it for others)
May 4, 2011 11:36 AM - James L: How drastic... That was a curveball I didn't expect after we went through so many ups and downs together.
May 4, 2011 1:02 AM - John McCullough: I figured out how you meet TANG! You find his mangled corpse in the room with the statues and sarcophagus and you can raise him. Perfect.
May 3, 2011 12:18 PM - Mat T: Thanks Dan!
May 3, 2011 11:56 AM - Capt_Dan: I have enough dice, and I really don't mind sharing anyway. I will bring a selection of dwarf minis.
May 3, 2011 11:50 AM - Mat T: Will anyone have spare dice/minis on them? I managed to leave the house this morning without my dice bag. Not sure if I can make it up to CS to grab new dice (cause who doesn't always want new dice?) before it closes today.
May 3, 2011 11:43 AM - John McCullough: Behold your terrible foe! http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2011/04/28/fashion/28BARTON-span/Z-BARTON-P1-A-articleLarge.jpg
May 2, 2011 4:58 PM - James L: I'm so proud we were able to defeat David Barton in his chaise-lounge, where's the pic? put it on forum?
May 2, 2011 4:23 PM - Capt_Dan: You take that feat, you'll never fall over again...
Apr 29, 2011 12:46 PM - James L: Holy crap, the feat "Skill Power" let's me take that without using up a useful Utility Power slot. Essentially becomes->Take feat-> stand up from prone as a minor action At-Will. Power-Creep
Apr 29, 2011 12:42 PM - James L: I spend in inordinate time prone which prevents me from gaining CA, so I'm retraining my utility to Agile Recovery, At-Will stand up from prone as a minor.
Apr 28, 2011 5:04 PM - Capt_Dan: You mean, 'Disarm'...
Apr 28, 2011 5:02 PM - Mat T: You mean some *more* traps. ;)
Apr 28, 2011 4:52 PM - James L: Can't wait to set off some traps!
Apr 25, 2011 3:18 PM - John McCullough: Great, see everyone on Thursday.
Apr 25, 2011 10:09 AM - Mat T: Thanks a lot guys! Unfortunately, legal matters have to trump D&D.
Apr 25, 2011 9:50 AM - James L: Thursday works for me also. I'm glad everyone was able to reschedule.
Apr 24, 2011 9:16 PM - Scott p: thursday isn't my best day, but I'm in.
Apr 24, 2011 5:47 PM - John McCullough: I hear that about the waiting... Scott, James?
Apr 24, 2011 5:14 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay by me, apart from TWO more days of waiting...
Apr 24, 2011 5:12 PM - John McCullough: I can do Thursday. Does that work for everyone?
Apr 24, 2011 11:07 AM - Capt_Dan: I have no problem changing for either day.
Apr 24, 2011 7:57 AM - Mat T: I really hate to ask this, but is there any way we can reschedule this week's session to Wednesday or Thursday? Something came up suddenly that I *have* to be at on Wednesday night.
Apr 21, 2011 11:04 PM - Capt_Dan: Man, I am missing this, right now. I can't wait to watch you get your asses kicked by Fakererak.
Apr 18, 2011 6:57 PM - James L: Don't forget! We aren't meeting this week. Don't go to Cafe Au Bon Gout tomorrow the 19th!
Apr 15, 2011 9:36 AM - James L: You're right! Then I'll just say "Rocks fall you all die." Then I'll flip over the table.
Apr 15, 2011 9:32 AM - Capt_Dan: Yeah, but you'll be very disappointed when they unanimously deicide that opening the other pew is a ridiculous idea...
Apr 15, 2011 9:19 AM - James L: Yeah, I'll run it for sure. I will get so much pleasure from watching everyone stumble into death traps.
Apr 15, 2011 9:09 AM - Matt G: no worries - thanks anyways
Apr 14, 2011 11:03 PM - John McCullough: Matt G, I think it's a little too late to join in. It's a really popular mod, so you can probably find someone to run it again. It's definitely worth waiting for a chance to play the whole thing. Sorry it didn't work out this time.
Apr 14, 2011 10:54 AM - Matt G: Apologies guys, I meant to post that I could not join you guys (again) but totally spaced. If it's too late to join in on the fun, I totally understand. If not, I can make it this Tuesday. Again, sorry for the no-shows.
Apr 14, 2011 10:54 AM - Matt G: Apologies guys, I meant to post that I could not join you guys (again) but totally spaced. If it's too late to join in on the fun, I totally understand. If not, I can make it this Tuesday. Again, sorry for the no-shows.
Apr 11, 2011 11:23 AM - Mat T: I don't know him, but you might try finding him on the Meetup site, since you can email people through that.
Apr 10, 2011 10:22 AM - John McCullough: Does anyone know Matt G? He expressed some interest but never signed up for the game again. Does anyone know if he's planning on showing up on Tuesday?
Apr 10, 2011 10:20 AM - John McCullough: Alright, to date you have each earned 2613 xp. Please bring the same character sheet you had last week to this week's game, as you haven't been able to get an extended rest yet.
Apr 6, 2011 3:53 PM - Mat T: I never thought having a cleric train in Arcana would actually be useful... Though Athletics might have been a better choice. ;)
Apr 6, 2011 1:55 PM - Capt_Dan: He pulled the lever, nothing happened! It was the only remaining course of action... Go forward or go home...
Apr 6, 2011 1:35 PM - John McCullough: Grahal: "This rope is boring... I'ma open this chest."

Apr 6, 2011 10:35 AM - James L: It's really awesome how many skills get brought into play. I feel as a Thief I have a huge advantage since I have so many skills trained.
Apr 6, 2011 10:29 AM - James L: Tomb of Horrors is indeed awesome. We have such teamwork!! Yet it's awesome how those series of rooms caused us to degenerate into magnificent bickering and blame laying!! On the subway John was telling me the Paladin releasing the skeletal guardian was one of his favorite moments as a DM ever!
Apr 6, 2011 12:44 AM - John McCullough: Great start, everyone. I can't wait for next time!
Apr 6, 2011 12:28 AM - Scott p: awesome start. I think now that we know how the other characters work things will flow well.
of course that is until people start getting dropped and we have to get all new party dynamics.
Apr 6, 2011 12:21 AM - Capt_Dan: Exellent work so far. Opening things on a whim and rapid forward motion is definitely the way to go.
Apr 5, 2011 3:43 PM - LeroyJenkins: I cast Lvl. 3 Eroticism.
Apr 5, 2011 3:42 PM - LeroyJenkins: I put on my robe and wizard hat.
Apr 5, 2011 7:20 AM - John McCullough: Wow, after all the initial interest I'm surprised we got so few committed. No worries, we'll have a blast anyway.

Matt G, feel free to hop back on the committed list and join us on the 12th.
Apr 4, 2011 5:24 PM - John McCullough: I did skip the 19th on purpose, and the essentials restriction has been dropped.
Apr 4, 2011 5:18 PM - Capt_Dan: I'm in. All over it, this should be very good.
Apr 4, 2011 5:07 PM - Scott p: I hope he skipped the 19th on purpose, because I can't make that date.
Apr 4, 2011 4:52 PM - Mat T: I'm in with some form of leader. Hope we have someone defending. ;)
Apr 4, 2011 4:36 PM - James L: Did the "Essentials" only restriction go away officially?
Apr 4, 2011 4:35 PM - James L: Did you skip the 19th on purpose?
Apr 4, 2011 3:17 PM - Scott p: I'm here, totally stoked to Mage this thing up.
Apr 4, 2011 3:00 PM - Scott p: I'm here, totally stoked to Mage this thing up.
Apr 4, 2011 11:41 AM - John McCullough: And can I get a roll call of the people on the committed list? To be clear, we will be playing Tuesday night at Cafe Au Bon Gout starting at 7pm.
Apr 4, 2011 11:41 AM - John McCullough: Alright, I've changed the first session and RSVP deadlines into the future, so that should allow people to drop/add to the committed list as time allows. Matt G, I don't mind if you start 1 session late, but you should probably drop for now to free up the spot. If no one else jumps in before tomorrow, feel free to add yourself back in and join us for the second session.
Apr 4, 2011 11:14 AM - Matt G: Totally understood, and if you guys feel it necessary to have me replaced, no hard feelings. If not, perhaps you can find my character in the Tomb, along the way... perhaps shackled to some odd looking torture device and requiring the assistance of one Miracle Max in order to revive.
Apr 4, 2011 11:02 AM - James L: Matt G, work sucks, and I think we have all had similar situations. I think everyone would be flexible allow a missed session. It just sucks to miss the first part. It would be fair to give your spot to someone who could make every session, but I doubt there is anyone available.
Apr 4, 2011 11:00 AM - James L: I figured it out, on the Event itself, it stated that the game started on April 1st, but the first session wasn't until April 5th. Once the first date passes, no one can drop out. People are allowed to drop out up until the first session. Now if John wants to allow new people to join, he has to move the RSVP cutoff date into the future.
Apr 4, 2011 10:51 AM - James L: Hey waiting list, we have spots open in the Tomb of Horrors, starting tomorrow, read the comments. Can any of you still make it? Leave a comment saying you can, we are still working out website waiting list issues. Because of cutoff date, they can't leave committed list yet.
Apr 4, 2011 10:15 AM - Matt G: So, just to be clear, do you guys think that it will be possible to jump in the subsequent sessions? If not, I'll sadly have to leave the interested list. Let me know. Again, sorry for the late drop for tomorrow.
Apr 4, 2011 8:38 AM - John McCullough: Rob, you can drop by hitting the 'leave interested list'. Too bad the timing didn't work out.
Apr 3, 2011 10:36 PM - James L: If you edit the cutoff time to some time in the future, then post a comment here, the entire waiting list will get it. Then we might be able to find a last minute replacement. Otherwise games run just fine with 4-5 players.
Apr 3, 2011 10:35 PM - James L: John, after the cutoff time only the committed list gets emails, so the waiting list probably didn't get notice of drop outs.
Apr 3, 2011 10:00 PM - Scott p: i'll run an essentials mage since rob is out, and bring a back up defender, (tang to level nine, tang to level nine, come in tang) what is the rest of the party up to?
Apr 3, 2011 5:41 PM - Matt G: I just found out Friday that I'll be going to dinner with my new team from work that night, so I'll have to miss this Tuesday. Is it possible to jump in the subsequent sessions? Sorry for the late notice - I just started a new job.
Apr 3, 2011 3:04 PM - Rob R: F***. Either I'm an idiot missing the obvious (happens all the time) or there is no way to de-commit. Probably due to the lateness and 3/31 cut-off date.
Apr 3, 2011 3:02 PM - Rob R: Sorry for the late bail. But I originally had finagled my home game schedule to make this work but now, something has come up from the home side. It was not meant to be for me. Sorry again.
Apr 1, 2011 11:46 PM - John McCullough: If folks want to drop the essentials restriction, I'm not married to it.
Apr 1, 2011 11:46 PM - John McCullough: If folks want to drop the essentials restriction, I'm not married to it.
Mar 31, 2011 2:33 PM - Scott p: i second the notion of lifting the essentials only thing. (the marshal is just silly, btw, i don't understand the function of it being named differently, other than to put old warlords in essentials only games.)
Mar 30, 2011 2:11 PM - James L: In light of how the new "Essentials" Marshall (Warlord) is the exact same thing as the existing Warlord, but meant to be "Essentials". Should we remove the essentials only restriction?
Mar 30, 2011 12:27 AM - John McCullough: Jame, good timing! They also just released rules for Hirelings: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/dra/201103henchmen

Mar 30, 2011 12:19 AM - John McCullough: If anyone is looking for a different leader class, they just released the 'essentialized' warlord on DDI. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/dra/201103warlord

I've only skimmed it, but the Marshal seems really, really similar to the PH1 warlord.
Mar 29, 2011 3:31 PM - Matt G: i'll roll one or two and bring em.
Mar 29, 2011 1:58 PM - Mat T: So, is someone going to bring a defender? :)
Mar 29, 2011 10:09 AM - Capt_Dan: Well, that sucks for you - but I'm back in town and want in!
Mar 29, 2011 9:53 AM - T Michael: I just found out that I have to travel on the 12th and 26th for work. Sorry to pull out, Balthazar the dragonborn cavalier would have defended you well.
Mar 28, 2011 11:53 PM - John McCullough: The Cafe is at 30th and 5th.
Mar 28, 2011 6:10 PM - Mat T: BTW...where IS Cafe Au Bon Gout anyway?
Mar 28, 2011 6:09 PM - Mat T: James: That's what I was trying to point out regarding third characters. In Essentials-land, striker is the only role with more than 2 classes. Leaders are only Warpriest and Sentinel, controllers are only Mage and Hunter. I think there are like 4 striker classes though.
Mar 28, 2011 5:44 PM - James L: I just realized if you play a Knight and die, there is only one choice left in the defender role using Essentials only.
Mar 22, 2011 2:43 PM - John McCullough: Would you be willing to give up your uncommon magic item for a companion character of your level-2?
Mar 18, 2011 10:01 AM - James L: Can we bring henchmen? just kidding
Mar 18, 2011 10:00 AM - Mat T: Might be a good idea to make your second character the same role, but third would be hard, since most of the roles only have 2 classes in Essentials (other than striker). :)
Mar 18, 2011 9:56 AM - John McCullough: Role for your replacement characters is up to you guys.
Mar 17, 2011 7:11 PM - T Michael: Should our second and third characters be the same role as our primary, i.e., defender if you are a cavalier, leader if you are a warpriest?
Mar 17, 2011 6:46 PM - John McCullough: 2 or 3 characters would be a good idea, and the sessions will last about 4 hours each.
Mar 16, 2011 12:47 PM - Matt G: So, just to be clear, we should each bring 2-3 9th level essential characters to this? How long is each session going to last, approximately?
Mar 15, 2011 9:47 PM - Brian Peters: I'm jealous! This is a CLASSIC mod, and John is an excellent DM! You guys should have fun!
Mar 12, 2011 11:29 PM - John McCullough: DDI articles that add options to essentials characters are fine.
Mar 8, 2011 11:32 AM - Mat T: I'm rather liking the Sun domain Warpriest. Though I'll probably make up a Sentinel just in case I need a replacement character. Nice thing is, both of them get a daily resurrection spell as a level 7 or 8 class feature.
Mar 8, 2011 11:30 AM - Mat T: Out of curiosity, what about DDI articles that add options to the Essential classes (like the Warpriest Earth Domain, or the Mage Pyromancer)?

I assume we're doing Essentials-only magic items as well?
Mar 8, 2011 10:05 AM - Rob R: I'm thinking of creating an Illusionist Mage -though I'm not wedded to the idea if we need another role filled.
Mar 5, 2011 7:34 AM - John McCullough: Let's go whole hog - all essentials all the way - race, class, feats, the works. And as James suggested, it wouldn't hurt to bring an extra character or two.
Mar 4, 2011 12:45 PM - James L: I think the intention was to keep the characters all fairly simple so when they die!!!!!!! it's easy to use a replacement since they won't have 3 pages of powers
Mar 4, 2011 12:42 PM - Rob R: Also feats? Basically, are the only resources available from the Essentials line? Personally, these restrictions would be fine with me if that is what you are looking for.
Mar 4, 2011 11:06 AM - T Michael: John, just to clarify, do you mean essentials only in terms of classes or race as well?
Mar 4, 2011 11:05 AM - T Michael: Essentials only is fine with me.
Mar 4, 2011 10:44 AM - Mat T: Essentials would be fine with me.
Mar 4, 2011 10:31 AM - Rob R: Essentials only game is fine. Whatever the DM wants......
Mar 4, 2011 9:44 AM - James L: Would any other DMs be interested in running this simultaneously as John runs this one? There seems to be a lot of interest in this adventure.
Mar 4, 2011 7:12 AM - Matt G: Doesnt matter to me - the traps are stil the same...
Mar 4, 2011 12:55 AM - John McCullough: How would people feel about an essentials only game?
Mar 2, 2011 1:43 PM - Mat T: Ah, ok. That makes much more sense :)
Mar 2, 2011 1:13 PM - John McCullough: @Mat T Sorry, typo in the time for some of the sessions. Fixed.
Mar 2, 2011 12:09 PM - Mat T: A weekday at 5pm? Kinda tough for anyone who works 9-5...
Mar 2, 2011 10:51 AM - John McCullough: Time and place updated.
Mar 1, 2011 9:21 PM - James L: After this is run. I'd be up for running part of the new 4th edition Tomb of Horrors Superadventure to see how much related storyline there is.
Mar 1, 2011 1:21 PM - Mat T: Potential dates would definitely be good :)
Mar 1, 2011 11:53 AM - Rob R: I've never played any version of Tonb of Horrors, so I'm kinda itching to be able to say I lost my xxxxx to a random Tomb of Horrors trap. : )
Mar 1, 2011 11:51 AM - Rob R: I'm not sure how this works. Last time I waited for a final time and commitment - 6 people already had committed. Since I know I can play weeknights and weekends pretty easily (lotta flexibility) I decided to try to not get shut out. *shrug*
Mar 1, 2011 11:39 AM - James L: You guys are committed no matter where and when? That's aggressive.
Mar 1, 2011 10:18 AM - T Michael: John is the table full? If not, I would love to join.
Mar 1, 2011 10:08 AM - Matt G: Sweet, I'm psyched!
Mar 1, 2011 10:04 AM - John McCullough: @Matt G - this will probably not happen in the middle of the day on a weekday, but it may very well have an afternoon slot on a weekend.
Mar 1, 2011 9:24 AM - Matt G: Did Will Wheaton die in this one? I thought Chris Perkins used his own.
Feb 26, 2011 2:15 PM - Jensen: I havent played this since ad&d and have wanted to go back ever since!!!!
Feb 26, 2011 12:33 AM - Scott p: oh fuck yeah. the mod that killed wil wheaton!
Feb 26, 2011 12:11 AM - John McCullough: Yeah, I ran it as soon as I got it in the mail. Loads of fun.
Feb 25, 2011 4:34 PM - KenB: I ran this exact adventure in 3 sessions. It's a lot of fun and can be very deadly.
Feb 25, 2011 3:40 PM - John McCullough: James, 2 characters might be enough.
Feb 25, 2011 3:13 PM - Brian Peters: And our first two masochists have thrown their hats into the ring... "Fresh meat! , fresh meat for the grinder!"
Feb 25, 2011 2:11 PM - James L: This sounds sweet, maybe I'll bring two Essentials characters in case the one who is extremely foolhardy dies.
Feb 25, 2011 1:54 PM - Graham: heck yeah!
Feb 25, 2011 1:45 PM - John McCullough: Hi all. I'd like to run this in late April/early May

Once there are a few people interested I'll work out times and locations.
