Last Breaths of Ashenport
Cost: $0.00
Level: 8

First Session: Thursday -- August 18th, 2011 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 3-4 sessions

It stands a lonely vigil atop a remote northern shore, hunkered down against the terrible ocean storms. For most of the year, it sits alone, for trade in the region has decreased. If this were any other town, it would long since have been forgotten, or perhaps even abandoned.

But this is no other village. This is Ashenport. Here, the fish are plentiful. Here, the crops grow and thrive despite the rocky soil. Here, the ocean offers up its riches willingly, like a bashful lover.

The remote seaside town of Ashenport isn’t visited by many, for good reason. When the PCs arrive to weather a fierce storm battering the coast, they discover that something dark lurks beneath the town's pleasant veneer. It's up the heroes to discover the horrifying secrets of Ashenport.

You probably need to like H.P. Lovecraft's story The Shadow Over Innsmouth to enjoy this module. If you don't get excited over the "Innsmouth Look" and want the usual monsters you might not enjoy this.

Sep 12, 2011 9:49 AM - Ross H: Sorry - forgot to update... Yeah, I think we're just going to call it off for now, think we've lost a bit much momentum and are starting to run into other scheduling issues. I may repost at some point, though... Thanks all for joining in!
Sep 12, 2011 9:46 AM - John McCullough: Ended up with too few people to play. Not sure about the schedule going forward.
Sep 8, 2011 11:34 AM - Rob R: So what did you guys do last night? And is it OK if I still show up for the conclusion / continuation next week?
Sep 7, 2011 1:07 PM - John McCullough: I say we just play it out. I'll be there tonight and we'll see where it goes.
Sep 7, 2011 11:19 AM - Ross H: Ooh, I saw those and it looked fun! Given the late notice, I think we're probably best to cancel tonight's Ashenport game. I'd definitely be down for trying the skirmish game, so I'll still plan on coming to ABG by 7ish - feel free to join or not, and we'll figure out a plan for next steps with Ashenport.
Sep 7, 2011 11:17 AM - Tracy: Or...they just released the play test for the new skirmish game. We could play that instead. I just printed it out and laminated the cards. Looks like fun!
Sep 7, 2011 9:32 AM - Tracy: Chris, anyway Pat can hop on? If we can't get at least 1 player to fill in then I think we should postpone and reschedule a day if possible or try and do double up Saturday or Sunday.
Sep 7, 2011 9:27 AM - Ross H: And then there were three, as three have succumbed to the call of the sea and hurled themselves to their doom...

So, Tracy/John/Chris - thoughts? I'm not really sure how to scale this down to three. What do y'all think?
Sep 7, 2011 9:23 AM - Rob R: Sorry I too need to drop out. I went to sleep last night with flu-like symnptoms. I woke up and it is official. I don't really want to risk getting anyone sick and I'm not really physically up to it. See you next week.
Sep 6, 2011 6:14 PM - Jason P.: Wow, James, congrats! My news isn't so grand. I have to go for more extensive rehab on my knee tomorrow. Rather than mess with traveling around, I should just drop. I hope to see some of you guys @ Dresden Files. Grats again, James.
Sep 6, 2011 1:28 PM - John McCullough: Whoa! Congrats, James! Best of luck, I hope mom and baby are feeling fine.
Sep 6, 2011 10:01 AM - Rob R: Congratulations James. Welcome to fatherhood and a 6-monthish hiatus from DnD : )
Sep 6, 2011 9:45 AM - Ross H: Well, congratulations!! Hope all are well, best of luck with everything! Everyone else, reminder that we're on tomorrow at Au Bon Gout!
Sep 6, 2011 9:15 AM - James L: My baby came 2 weeks early. I won't be able to solve the mystery of what's going on in Ashenport.
Sep 5, 2011 5:37 PM - Ross H: Yup!
Sep 5, 2011 5:34 PM - John McCullough: So, we're playing Wednesday this week?
Aug 30, 2011 2:09 PM - John McCullough: What a bummer, forced to spend a week in CA! See you next week and travel safe.
Aug 29, 2011 2:40 PM - Ross H: I was on vacation in Seattle, ended up flying down to stay with my folks in CA - cheaper than a week's worth of hotels, but a pain to work remotely all week! Anyway, hope you all made it through things safe. I think we should be fine with the remaining two sessions, so we'll see you next week as planned!
Aug 27, 2011 12:13 PM - Rob R: Ouch, hope your with friends or family and not stuck out there for business. Your missing out on some fun out here.
Aug 27, 2011 4:42 AM - Ross H: Hi all - so, somewhat ridiculous, but it looks like I'm stuck on the west coast all week - flight cancelled, and next weekend was the best they could do! So no game this week. We'll figure out what this means for the schedule. Sorry - and stay dry out there!
Aug 18, 2011 5:37 PM - MikeR: Hey, this is Jay's friend. He wanted to let you know he was going to be a little late to tonight's meetup.
Aug 18, 2011 2:45 PM - Ross H: I wish... it's *beautiful* out. I should do a game on my balcony some day before the weather goes!
Aug 18, 2011 2:43 PM - James L: You think there's a place to play outside nearby?
Aug 18, 2011 2:37 PM - Ross H: Sure, glad to have you, James!
Aug 18, 2011 2:36 PM - James L: If you'll still have me, I might join you last minute. With a Mage.
Aug 18, 2011 1:21 PM - Tracy: to their treasure cove, the order has been given. "Full speed ahead. Man the oars you lilly livered scum! We'll poke this storm in the eye and laugh at it once we're safe at home boys!"
Aug 18, 2011 1:19 PM - Tracy: Padishar Creel has been sailing the seventeen seas his whole life. His skills as a navigator are almost unsurpassed and his talent with spell and blade contribute to the high price he receives for his services. For the passed 8 months he has been navigating the infamous Water Thunder, captained by the always wealthy, oftentimes stubborn, and rarely kind Tiefling Warlord - Ixtian Paracel. Padishar tried to warn him about the ominous clouds in the distance signaling a storm, but being so close
Aug 18, 2011 12:46 PM - Ross H: Au Bon Gout is at 5th Ave & 30th - we'll be up in the back seating area, up the stairs. I'll probably be there a bit early to get set up and have a bite to eat.
Aug 18, 2011 12:43 PM - Tracy: where is au bon gout again? I've only been there once. :)
Aug 18, 2011 12:05 PM - Rob R: After hearing of the seaside town of Ashenport and it's remoteness, it would seem a good place to lay low, spend some loot and romance some lovely local ladies. Yes, the more I think of it, I may stay awhile. Now if only this storm would let up so i can enjoy the fair weather with a fair damsel.
Aug 18, 2011 12:01 PM - Rob R: After many months adventuring, saving damsels in distress and avoiding Fire Cultists and their damn Fire Phoenix of Death, Jan-Tun, Half-Elf Paladin of Selune is in need of a vacation.
Aug 18, 2011 11:45 AM - Rob R: Sorry to hear Graham. Hope it's nothing too serious.
Aug 18, 2011 11:22 AM - Graham: sorry guys my life hit a shit storm I can't play in this one...
Aug 18, 2011 9:41 AM - Ross H: Just a reminder, this is tonight at Cafe Au Bon Gout! See y'all there.
Aug 17, 2011 12:03 PM - Ross H: @Chris Yes, take a nice rest on the seaside! Pay no mind to the tide creeping up on you. And are those tentacles nipping at your toes? No, no. Just close your eyes and enjoy a seaside nap.
Aug 17, 2011 12:01 PM - Jensen: work? Im on my way to a lovely vacation spot. hope I dont get any detours, maybe pick up a wench in ashenport but you know how it is on the high seas.
Aug 17, 2011 11:57 AM - Ross H: What is this "work" you speak of?
Aug 17, 2011 11:54 AM - Tracy: Doesn't anyone work around here? Is this break time?
Aug 17, 2011 11:53 AM - Ross H: Done. Graham, you should be able to join now.
Aug 17, 2011 11:52 AM - Jensen: Hey Ross can you unlock the confirmed date and time so Graham can join up in the group? Graham what you thinking of playing?
Aug 16, 2011 5:46 PM - Ross H: So it sounds like we can switch the third session to Wednesday the 7th, then (I'm guessing that's okay with Chris since he suggested it at Cairn last night). Welcome to Ashenport, then, Graham!
Aug 16, 2011 5:44 PM - Graham: That would be awesome!
Aug 16, 2011 4:30 PM - Rob R: I'm okay with switching to either day.
Aug 16, 2011 3:47 PM - John McCullough: I could play Wednesday the 7th, but not Tuesday.
Aug 16, 2011 12:24 PM - Tracy: I'm open to change
Aug 16, 2011 11:43 AM - Ross H: Graham, I didn't realize it was just the 8th that's a problem for you. Hey everyone: if we moved the session on the 8th to some other night that week (Tuesday or Weds), would that work so we can include Graham?
Aug 16, 2011 11:41 AM - Ross H: Never mind; I'm sick of the bathroom at Citi. We're doing Cafe Au Bon Gout.
Aug 15, 2011 4:09 PM - Ross H: I'm thinking Citi, unless anyone has strong preferences for somewhere else?
Aug 15, 2011 4:02 PM - Jason P.: Where will this be, again?
Aug 14, 2011 7:59 PM - John McCullough: Some of you may know Olaf Olafsen as the World's Fastest Dwarf. He is traveling through Ashenport on his way home after after a month of revelry at the annual Hammer Festival. His talents include: dismantling reptile cults, smashing werewolves, inspecting apples, and running fast.

Let me be the first to say: fuck yeah. http://puddlesgathering.com/blog/ani-enter_the_dungeon.gif
Aug 14, 2011 3:25 PM - Ross H: 3) Feel free to post a bit of background on your characters and any connections they may have. Feel free to be traveling together or alone as you see fit; you'll all end up in the same place pretty quickly. 4) Looking forward to playing with y'all!
Aug 14, 2011 3:24 PM - Ross H: 2) Relatedly, although I know you've all read the summary and have a sense as *players* that something's a bit off in Ashenport, your *characters* don't... at first. It's a perfectly normal(-seeming) town. So, if possible, try to keep the metagame knowledge that there's something off about it out of your character's actions until the game itself starts to rouse your suspicions.
Aug 14, 2011 3:23 PM - Ross H: Just a reminder to all that we're starting this week! Looking forward to it :D A couple notes: 1) Unless you specify otherwise, you're all going to end up in Ashenport completely unintentionally. If you really want to be there for a specific reason, let me know, but in a lot of ways it's probably better if you're on some other mission and just sort of end up in Ashenport.
Aug 10, 2011 11:33 PM - Tommy T: I dropped due to too much going on. Sorry
Aug 2, 2011 12:12 PM - Jason P.: Awww. Bree is like Alex from Clockwork Orange. Or for you younger whippersnappers, like Spike from Buffy after he got the chip in his head. Bree, Bree, it rhymes with 'don't flee!!!'
Aug 2, 2011 11:32 AM - James L: yeah
Aug 2, 2011 11:22 AM - Tommy T: Had to drop out, James?
Jul 29, 2011 5:41 PM - Jason P.: She now tries to be "good" after a fashion, with one part of her original rebelliousness countered by a healthy two parts of submissiveness and self-loathing. Her Lord enjoys seeing Bree suffer under her inner turmoil, knowing that Bree wants to kill him but confident that she is too broken to do anything about it. She exercises her urge to kill on bad guys, and she is very good at it (or else others in the town would have killer her already), at least for now.
Jul 29, 2011 5:35 PM - Jason P.: In her mortal life, Bree the vampire was a halfling concubine for a local lord with exotic sexual tastes. Plotting revenge against her sick, twisted lord, she became a vampire in a dark ritual and exacted bloody, gory revenge upon most of the Lord's personal guard and a decent chunk of the town as well. The Lord captured her, but something inside him decided not to have her put to death. So he "reeducated" her through torture, cutting off some fingers and other unmentionable parts.
Jul 29, 2011 2:26 PM - James L: I apologize. I'd like to resolve the conflict before we play this game. My provocative words were a response to the phrase "for giggles". I have been looking forward to this adventure specifically for the mood that it portrays to be. How I should have responded is: Can we make this game more horror themed instead of deliberately attempting to play humorous characters?
Jul 28, 2011 5:44 PM - Jason P.: Sookie, not Snooki. Get your hot Hollywood starlets straight, man.
Jul 27, 2011 3:45 PM - James L: You're Snooki and I am the New Jersey Police and the guy who punched Snooki in the face, rolled into one .
Jul 27, 2011 3:43 PM - Jason P.: Dramatic tension, obviously. Like Sookie and Eric Northman, only without the HBO X-ratedness.
Jul 27, 2011 2:12 PM - Ross H: Well, that's settled. I'm still wondering how the vampire and the vampire slayer are going to get along, though...
Jul 27, 2011 2:11 PM - Rob R: As much as I would enjoy butting heads with the world's fastest Dwarf and trying to make him look the unreasonable one, I will go with the Paladin as enjoy strikers least of all classes anyway.
Jul 24, 2011 11:44 AM - Ross H: This is a reasonably good adventure for a sort of "strange bedfellows thrown together by a common threat" party. And the townspeople of Ashenport are somewhat surprisingly tolerant of a wide variety of visitors, so long as they're not obviously hostile. So, while I'd suggest avoiding any outright conflicts between party members, the adventure should accommodate a party that probably otherwise wouldn't be working together...
Jul 24, 2011 11:09 AM - John McCullough: Olaf is an open-minded dwarf, but even he would have trouble working with a Vampire and an Orc, at least at first. If folks are interested in playing out that rocky relationship, I'd be up for it.
Jul 23, 2011 1:50 PM - Rob R: I don't mind playing either depending on party needs. These are both characters I've previously played to level 7. I would just level them to 8 and adjust them to fit the guidelines. I prefer this way so that I have some experience with a pc and don't slow down play too much playing a pc I haven't had any prior play with.
Jul 23, 2011 1:47 PM - Rob R: The orc is a chieftain's son out on a quest to prove himself to his father. Personally, his goal is to better learn about other races, so he could effectively handle race relations when he is chieftain. He's civilized and not your typical orc (CHR 17 - Diplomacy 15). He wears fine clothes and has a gold tooth. (of course I would understand and expect some flak from the civilized races)
Jul 23, 2011 1:41 PM - Rob R: If I play the Paladin of Selune, I was thinking he could be traveling with other party members - shouldn't be too difficult o come up with something.
Jul 22, 2011 10:59 PM - Ross H: FYI, you're all going to arrive fresh to Ashenport at the beginning of the game. I don't care if you come together or separately, but you should think a bit about the dynamics y'all want.
Jul 22, 2011 10:58 PM - Ross H: An orc is okay with me, and the citizens of Ashenport may be a bit uncomfortable, but I'm sure they'll manage. But how does the rest of your party feel about it? Are y'all already a team? What brings you together?
Jul 22, 2011 6:01 PM - Rob R: Unless an Orc would be problematic.
Jul 22, 2011 6:00 PM - Rob R: I can bring a Half-Elf Paladin or thinking maybe an Orc Thaneborn Barbarian.
Jul 22, 2011 4:17 PM - Ross H: I'm looking forward to seeing how the vampire and the vampire slayer get along!
Jul 22, 2011 12:40 PM - Ross H: I'm okay with that idea, but don't feel strongly enough to push it on people if it's not a well-liked idea... Thoughts? I kind of like the idea just because it'd make my job simpler, but whatever folks feel like going with.
Jul 22, 2011 12:38 PM - James L: Ross, everyone, do you want to try Essentials only and see if it speeds up gameplay? like here: http://rpgconnect.org/popup_instruct_Essentials.html
Jul 21, 2011 11:01 PM - Rob R: Not for long Tommy. You and Tracy should both jump me shortly.
Jul 21, 2011 5:00 PM - Tommy T: If anyone wants to bump me, feel free. I am low many on the totem on this list.
Jul 21, 2011 2:00 PM - Ross H: John, is that Olaf Olafson, the fastest dwarf in the world?!?
Jul 17, 2011 7:25 PM - Jason P.: I might be iffy for weeknights since that will be around when my MSW program starts up. Weekends are more solid for me, but I might be able to do Thursdays. I'll stay on the list and see what develops regardless.
Jul 17, 2011 11:30 AM - Ross H: (An alternative schedule could be to do a long session to finish up over the labor day weekend, but I know that may conflict with people's travel plans. Let me know if that'd be appealing, though.)
Jul 17, 2011 11:27 AM - Ross H: OK, I'm going to propose some session dates. These are *flexible*, so please chime in and I can try to move things around to accommodate people as best I can. I've got a skip week in because I'll be out of town, but we could push back to start in September if that'd work better. Anyway, let's see how these potential dates work.
Jul 17, 2011 1:55 AM - Jason P.:
Jul 17, 2011 12:49 AM - Graham: i looking forward to this!
Jul 15, 2011 1:38 PM - Ross H: John, many travelers have enjoyed the opportunity to take part in our long-standing town tradition of bobbing for apples! Here, just stick your head into this bucket of icy-cold sea water. I promise, there's an apple in there somewhere - just keep your head down!

Hmm, maybe Thursdays? I'll ask folks at the Yuan-Ti game tonight to see how that'd fit with other scheduling. I may then start a bit later (after PAX).
Jul 15, 2011 6:51 AM - John McCullough: Weekends are tough for me. I've got a few family obligations at the end of the summer, but weeknights should be good.

Also, how are the apples is Ashenport?
Jul 14, 2011 9:50 PM - Ross H: I think we should be able to get through this on two good weekend days - I'm considering Saturdays, August 20th and September 3rd (I'm out of town at PAX the weekend in between). How does that sound to folks?
Jul 14, 2011 1:05 PM - Ross H: Chris, you're in for a treat - the fish sticks are to die for! Muhuhahahah! ... sorry, had something in my throat there.
Jul 14, 2011 1:03 PM - Jensen: That is what I thought. I am going for the fish sticks and frog legs. i heard they were amazing. It is where I thought I would go for my adventuring summer vacation.
Jul 14, 2011 12:57 PM - Ross H: Whaaat? Ashenport is *nothing* like Innsmouth! There's nothing strange about this place at all! It's a *perfectly* normal town.
Jul 14, 2011 12:26 PM - James L: I suggest to you all go read Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" it's a short story. It's so old it's free, you can easily find it online.
Jul 13, 2011 4:26 PM - Graham: Sounds fun!
Jul 11, 2011 10:09 AM - Ross H: Fear the sea!!

I'd like to run this in August. Flexible on scheduling; thinking weekends as I know some folks are in Brian's Cairn game (including me!) on Mondays, but could do weeknights if that's easier.
