Dark Sun - Vault of Dorom Madar
Cost: $0.00
Level: 1

First Session: Monday -- October 24th, 2011 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 3-4 sessions

To whet people's appetite for Darksun. Warning: this is like playing on super-hard mode. The harsh desert world of Athas will most likely kill you and no one will shed a tear since water is precious.

It takes place in the Tablelands beyond the alluvial sand wastes. The adventure challenges the characters to find an ancient treasure lost somewhere in the vast desert. The characters, however, are not the only group seeking to uncover the long-lost fortune, so the heroes must not only find the treasure but return safely with it to the gates of Tyr. This is a great intro to Dark Sun.

Nov 14, 2011 10:42 AM - Capt_Dan: hey all, very sorry about this, but I can't make it tonight - I have too many things that came in this morning. Enjoy Fourthcore, if that's the right adjective...
Nov 13, 2011 4:32 PM - Josh M.: he didn't bring it with him. I emailed him this morning and I'm just going to stop by his work and pick it up tomorrow.
Nov 13, 2011 2:52 PM - Capt_Dan: Josh, just to be sure - since Tracy seems pretty ill right now - did you get the mod at all?
Nov 11, 2011 9:28 PM - Jesse B: Going to bring a Shaman. I'm guessing the world we are going to be in is primal-allowable.
Nov 11, 2011 1:14 PM - Josh M.: doh! He brought it, but then I forgot to get it from him before we left.
But I'm seeing him again tonight, so I'll make sure I get it.
Nov 11, 2011 1:12 PM - John McCullough: Josh, were you able to get the printed adventure from TJ, or should I print a new copy?
Nov 9, 2011 11:44 AM - James L: Was leaning towards Blackguard, but also leaning towards Drow Dark Pact Warlock
Nov 7, 2011 3:09 PM - Josh M.: don't forget to also bring level 2 versions of our characters. Just in case we live that long.
Nov 7, 2011 10:13 AM - Capt_Dan: Is it frosty beers and piles of treasure, perhaps with a couple of distracted kobolds guarding it all?
Nov 7, 2011 9:58 AM - John McCullough: See everyone tonight. What awaits our heroes behind the massive copper doors?
Nov 4, 2011 5:39 PM - Jesse B: I'll go along with that rundown of events, and add my own take- a flying beetle who came in to save the day, and failed miserably; as a sneaky Mul said "Wassin't me", a grifter was busy pilfering the blind druid with the 'wandering eye' and the failed merchant was trying to rally everyone along despite unskillful successes.
Nov 3, 2011 7:43 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, I will make next Monday from the beginning.
Nov 2, 2011 3:29 PM - Capt_Dan: I think Characters are best when they carry the consequences of their actions - Gra'ak may walk with a limp and suck at climbing now, but no one who saw it (and lived) is going to forget how he hurled himself 25 feet off a cliff to try and help his friends...
Nov 1, 2011 3:33 PM - Jesse B: That's one way to put it.
Nov 1, 2011 9:20 AM - John McCullough: Great game last night. I think adventures are the most fun when everything goes wrong, and people start getting desperate.
Oct 30, 2011 10:32 PM - John McCullough: Okay then, game on. We'll do a little hand-waving and Jarrid can pick up with us again on the 7th.
Oct 30, 2011 10:19 PM - Josh M.: I can make either option work, so I'll defer to those with scheduling conflicts.
Oct 30, 2011 10:17 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, assuming the enounters are scaled(!) I'm happy for him to catch up to our sun-bleached bones out in the desert...
Oct 30, 2011 9:46 PM - John McCullough: Alright, I'll put it to the group: shall we play with a missing player, or just skip the game on Oct 31 and pick up again on the 7th?
Oct 30, 2011 9:16 PM - Jarrid R: Please dont kill of my character.
Oct 30, 2011 9:13 PM - Jarrid R: No its not that type of thing. I just cant do 0ct 31
Oct 30, 2011 8:49 PM - John McCullough: Jarrid, Do you mean that you can't do Monday October 31st, or that you can't do any Monday?
Oct 30, 2011 7:07 PM - Capt_Dan: If Jarrid cn't make it, I would vote that we invite Vlad in, as he got kicked when James joined - I certainly vouch for him as a good player. We can pick him up in the town we are currently in - perhaps the Druid freaks out and runs back to the desert overnight, or has his throat slit in his sleep by a beggar...
Oct 30, 2011 6:03 PM - Jarrid R: damn, sorry guys, I cant do monday. I just got picked up for a job.
Oct 29, 2011 3:20 AM - Jesse B: Mondays fine for me.
Oct 28, 2011 2:57 PM - Josh M.: if it's going to cause other conflicts, then don't worry about it. I can make halloween work.
Oct 28, 2011 2:37 PM - Capt_Dan: I should also add, I will have to miss the first hour or so of the session on the 7th - but should be there not long after 8...
Oct 28, 2011 2:36 PM - Capt_Dan: Personally, the fact it's halloween means not much to me, but I'll abide with a group decision. I guess that's an abstention.
Oct 28, 2011 2:34 PM - John McCullough: I don't have another day free during the week, but we could skip a week if we needed to. Is that the group consensus?
Oct 28, 2011 1:55 PM - Josh M.: i somehow just realized that the next session is on Halloween... is there any possibility that we could move to a different night?
Oct 26, 2011 11:06 PM - Capt_Dan: ONE-SIDED???
Oct 26, 2011 10:57 PM - John McCullough: Great game. I love all the weapon breakage. It was also very one-sided. The enemies all missed, and I think you guys only missed with one of the many broken weapons.
Oct 26, 2011 10:07 PM - Jesse B: Dark Sun....where life is nasty brutish and a save away from death. Yikes. Though hopefully if we can put aside our ... distrust we should be fine...?
Oct 26, 2011 10:37 AM - James L: Funny how much weapon breakage came into play. It was awesome, the obsidian weapons shattered on the carapace of the Thri-Kreen. The thief destroyed like 5 daggers.
Oct 24, 2011 4:14 PM - James L: In one hand he carries a large insect leg he's sharpened into a sharp point. In the other hand a triangular chipped rock with a rag wrapped around it. He needs ceramic pieces as he is tired of being spit on. He'll do whatever is necessary.
Oct 24, 2011 4:11 PM - James L: His master's caravan was slaughtered by Elven mauraders in the Alluvial Wastes. They left Mul because they thought he was too injured to be any good. Well Gord survived that too. He wandered to the nearest city-state and has survived by begging for food and scraps.
Oct 24, 2011 4:06 PM - James L: Gord (pronounced Jord) is a Mul (half-dwarf) who was born into slavery. Every slave-master knows Mul's are tough and stubborn, so you have to beat them twice as hard. Gord spent most of his life broken, injured, and half-starved because the slave-masters were afraid of him ever at full health.
Oct 24, 2011 7:10 AM - John McCullough: See everyone tonight.
Oct 22, 2011 2:06 PM - Jarrid R: oh, if you also have a beetle figure that would be cool too.
Oct 22, 2011 12:22 PM - Jarrid R: Hey Dan, I could use a human druid, I mean nothing special just an outdoorsy guy.
Oct 21, 2011 9:44 AM - Capt_Dan: hey, if anyone would like a Mini, just put a quick description up...
Oct 20, 2011 8:38 AM - John McCullough: Excellent! Great backstories.
Oct 19, 2011 8:31 PM - Jarrid R: After the branding, the shame, and the tiresome work, Glen escaped into the wilderness and almost died until a band of thri-kreen attacked him and he fought back with admirable ferocity. They let him follow their band through the vast desert while he quietly learned their ways and the skill of the bow. They called him Tak, the only name he answers to.
Oct 19, 2011 8:25 PM - Jarrid R: Unlike his peers #47 (Glen crucial) was born free. His family were merchants by trade, nomads by philosphy. His caravan was wiped out by elven mauraders and as mercy they sold Glen into slavery.
Oct 19, 2011 7:07 PM - Jesse B: I could definitely use a shifting-granting leader. I'm also trained in Heal(+7). Not great but doable. Fighter/multi-classed Whip Training gives me reach and extra -2 on top of my Mark. My at-wills are pushes (Tide/Lure) along with Glad Theme(Dis Adv). Racial/Encounter powers give me mult-marking capabilities.
Oct 19, 2011 7:03 PM - Josh M.: just realized we all have G names so far.
Oct 19, 2011 6:58 PM - Jesse B: Captured a few days after he was born, Gra’ak and the rest of his clutch were brought up in a make-shift gladiator traveling house run by an ex-mercenary in the Tablelands. Trained more as oddities for the sandy ring, Gra’ak distinguished himself by becoming adept with an unusual choice of a weapon for a Thri-kreen: the whip.
Oct 19, 2011 6:57 PM - Jesse B: Gra’ak eventually won his freedom, by sparring the life of a dilettante nobleman who had attempted his mettle in the ring. Now Gra’ak, who watched the rest of his clutch cut down in the arena, lends his services to whoever can pay, even as he hunts for the mercenary and his troupe who disappeared the moment Gra’ak’s freedom had been won…
Oct 19, 2011 4:02 PM - Capt_Dan: I don't play professionally. It fits inside my cape as I wander the desert...
Oct 19, 2011 3:59 PM - Josh M.: aww, I was going to play flute... I guess I'll go with a lute instead.
Oct 19, 2011 3:56 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, to allow you all better synergy - Human Warlord, 2 Feats Bard Multiclass / S11 C15 D8 I18 W10 C14 / Arc, Blu, Dip, End, Heal, His, Int / ALL my attacks make others attack. 4 space shift on AP attacks before or after. Plays a mean Flute.
Oct 19, 2011 3:53 PM - Jarrid R: Naw you should be fine. My character is the wilderness guide type. I am wondering about the lack of control, even though I am excited about two leaders
Oct 19, 2011 3:34 PM - Josh M.: I should mention that this guy isn't TOO much squishier than my monk. Just a little bit moreso.
However, Gaius is a straight-up city-boy. So if we don't have a wilderness-guide type character, it may be something to think about.
Oct 19, 2011 3:31 PM - Capt_Dan: A thought - a PSionic Shardmind might work out interesting. A controller would balance us very nicely.
Oct 19, 2011 3:28 PM - Vlad: I'll play with cbuilder tonight after work. Ideally I want to get away from leader, but maybe I can cook up a controller or striker with off-heals
Oct 19, 2011 3:19 PM - Josh M.: Well, I guess I know how we meet up
Oct 19, 2011 3:14 PM - Capt_Dan: Ha. I multied into a Bard... I bet that Thri-Kreen is pretty solid on the drums...
Oct 19, 2011 3:07 PM - Josh M.: Gaius Sulla, a son born into one of the noble families of Balic, he has since become estranged from his family due to his 'unusual' views toward social hierarchy and slavery. He now travels Athas as a wandering minstrel, selling his services to noble houses across the land... and selling his shadier skills to whatever group has the coin and sufficient grudge against the ruling families.
Oct 19, 2011 3:04 PM - Josh M.: Yeah, another reason I was thinking of switching... monk's melee basic sucks, unless you're a stone-fist monk, which my elf is not.
sooooo... introducing:
Oct 19, 2011 2:54 PM - Capt_Dan: If you've got something squishy but very dangerous - ideally with an At-will that can be a Melee Basic, you should be okay. I'd feel safer with a knight in there though...
Oct 19, 2011 2:49 PM - Josh M.: if we're going to have two leaders, I might switch to a different, squishier, character I have in mind.
Oct 19, 2011 1:47 PM - Capt_Dan: Actually, what would be good is a high Wis character as a back-up healer with strong perception/insight because my Wis is actually real low.
Oct 19, 2011 1:39 PM - Capt_Dan: Not necessarily, if we have a good defender, two hard hitting strikers and then we both keep everyone hitting repeatedly and healed up we should be pretty strong. Some control might be good, but getting three good attacks out of a monk in one round is also pretty good - if you do change, I would still keep the healing element
Oct 19, 2011 1:35 PM - Vlad: Ahh good thing I asked. My sham was built the exact same way (granting attacks, a side of healing and convo skills). I'll make something else instead :)
Oct 19, 2011 1:28 PM - Capt_Dan: I've also got a good sideline in all the talky skills... I'm thinking Hannibal from the A-team...
Oct 19, 2011 1:25 PM - Capt_Dan: I'm playing a form of tactical warlord who grants others attacks and shifts, and covers the healing. I've got no significant attack of my own, but if everyone else is hitting hard, it shouldn't matter.
Oct 19, 2011 1:19 PM - Vlad: Mobility is always good, especially on an APed action. What type of character are you playing anyway? Is that a leader?
Oct 19, 2011 12:43 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, I have one question for you all, would you rather get a +2 to an attack made with an AP, or would you rather get a 4 space shift before or after an attack made with an AP??
Oct 19, 2011 10:21 AM - Jensen: Just saw this. I could fit this in except for November 7th. Damn you schedule!!! I love Dark Sun. Ive been wanting to play this adventure for awhile too
Oct 18, 2011 10:52 AM - Jesse B: No freebies til level two, gotcha. And old school talent shall be rolled.
Oct 18, 2011 10:32 AM - Tracy: If anyone drops out I'll join. I don't want to bump anyone. :)
Oct 18, 2011 1:56 AM - John McCullough: Shardmind sounds great. Obsidian would fit right in, although people might try to break off pieces of you to use as weapons and tools.
Oct 18, 2011 12:41 AM - Vlad: Are shardminds allowed? (If I make him fit into the story, like sandmind or obsidian men)
Oct 18, 2011 12:04 AM - John McCullough: Wild talents are allowed. For real, old-school flavor, roll randomly to see which one you get.

Inherent bonuses are NOT free expertise feats. They don't kick in until 2nd level, and they mimic the effect of a simple magic weapon or defensive item. It's in the DMG2, but I don't have a page number for you right now. You don't need to worry about it until 2nd level.
Oct 17, 2011 11:28 PM - Jesse B: A couple questions: Are "Wild talents" (DSC Book p81) allowed? And Weapon Expertise Feats are the inherent bonuses, i.e. +1 Freebies? Or in Thri-kreen "Ga ko to wila taka too? We-wee ex-ee inho bo bo free kos?" Uhm...yeah.
Oct 17, 2011 10:30 PM - John McCullough: Altaruk is a waypoint on the road between Balic and Tyr. Although it is not governed by a Sorceror-King, it is not an entirely free town. Wealthy merchant houses pay well to keep the city free from any disruptions that would hamper trade, and the mercenary guards don't take kindly to rabble-rousers or upstarts. It is a fine place to find work, though. Merchant caravans plying their wares throughout the Tablelands often find that they need to replace fallen guards in the middle of their journey..
Oct 17, 2011 10:00 PM - Josh M.: Just out of curiosity, is anyone besides the leader going to train in Heal?
Oct 17, 2011 8:20 PM - John McCullough: Excellent! It appears the party is assembled. You will begin your adventure in the fortified trade post called Altaruk.
Oct 17, 2011 4:32 PM - Capt_Dan: Now he hustles as he can, and only his quick tongue and uncanny ability to get on the good side of a bad situation have kept him alive thus far.
Oct 17, 2011 4:08 PM - Capt_Dan: Gul Haddur had been one of the youngest Caravan Masters in Tyr. Well liked and respected by his teams, he was as good at talking his way out of trouble as he was at starting it in the first place and he always had an eye on everyones back - except his own...
Oct 16, 2011 6:44 PM - Josh M.: survival days are basically Athasian rations -- water -- that allow you to survive in the wilderness during the day. For each day you go without survival days, you risk contracting sun sickness.
Oct 16, 2011 5:29 PM - Jarrid R: I dont understand, "survival days?" What does that mean
I am really excited about this but I have no idea what to expect.
Oct 16, 2011 5:22 PM - Capt_Dan: On this like a rash. A filthy, itching rash...
Oct 15, 2011 11:17 AM - John McCullough: Dark Sun characters only please. Use inherent bonuses and choose a Dark Sun theme. Don't forget to stock up on survival days and spare weapons. Wood and bone are fragile compared to steel!
