Madness at Gardmore Abbey - Entire Version
Cost: $0.00
Level: 6

First Session: Sunday -- November 6th, 2011 -- 11:00 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 12 sessions

This is the Entire Version with the DM running the entire adventure. It is estimated to take 12 sessions.

This deluxe adventure takes heroes into the ruins of Gardmore Abbey, a monastery that was once the base of a militant order of paladins devoted to Bahamut. According to legend, the paladins brought a dark artifact back from a far crusade and stored it in their abbey for safekeeping, and evil forces gathered to assault the abbey and take it back. What the legends don’t tell is that this artifact was actually the Deck of Many Things, a force of pure Chaos.

This adventure brings characters into the extensive dungeons beneath the ruins—dungeons that are warped and twisted with the raw forces of Chaos surrounding the cards of the deck.

According to studies online it is completely non-linear, players can explore the Abbey in any manner they choose. This adventure covers levels 6-8 and is pretty long.

Jan 28, 2012 9:53 AM - WalK: I should get there around 10
Jan 28, 2012 2:03 AM - Rob R: Sorry for not posting earlier but just got to a computer. I will not make it for Arkham Horror. Have fun and see everyone at 12.
Jan 28, 2012 12:40 AM - Deirdre: Well we"ll be there. You're welcome to join. :)
Jan 27, 2012 2:29 PM - WalK: Hmm... I might be able to get there early enough if I can get some things out of the way today instead of tomorrow morning... maybe...
Jan 27, 2012 9:35 AM - Rob R: I'm interested but I won't know til tonight : ( Need to check to see if I have anything I need to get done in the morning.
Jan 27, 2012 9:21 AM - Deirdre: We're thinking about getting to Citi around 10am for a game of Arkham Horror. Anyone else interested in saving the world from the abominations of time and space?
Jan 25, 2012 11:41 AM - Deirdre: She's played a slayer a few times just not at that level. We've been out of the D&D loop for a while in favor of ARKHAM HORROR! Muhuhahahahaaaa.
Jan 25, 2012 11:28 AM - Rob R: Just don't want a repeat of an LFR night where the newbie was given the DM's 10th level WIZARD at the table to play.
Jan 25, 2012 11:27 AM - Rob R: I wouldn't mind. Just please make it simple since she's a newbie. Though, it sounds like your going that route w/ a slayer.
Jan 25, 2012 8:54 AM - Sebastien: Sounds good to me. Was too hard on your cleric last time, I think. It's just a bit wearying to be unconscious for half of every battle. /:
Jan 24, 2012 9:40 PM - Deirdre: Is everyone OK with my roomie Donna coming to play a Half-Orc Slayer? She's sort of a newb, but highly trainable. :p
Jan 21, 2012 9:52 AM - Sebastien: O.o It really felt as if two weeks had already passed. Sorry.
Jan 21, 2012 8:00 AM - Deirdre: I'm having a medical procedure today so we're skipping this week. See you next Sat!
Jan 21, 2012 4:10 AM - Sebastien: So, when? Noon today?
Jan 13, 2012 9:06 PM - Sebastien: Several of us are signed up for the early LFR game. Are we just playing when that's done? Or?
Jan 10, 2012 2:06 PM - Capt_Dan: Guys, I'm really sorry - it just wasn't possible. I guess Hursal really did die in that Crypt...
Jan 9, 2012 12:41 PM - Rob R: I believe we left it as Saturday @ 12ish. Not sure of the exact time but it was around 12, 12:30. I figure on joining Tommy for the early LFR game so my mind din't process the exact start time.
Jan 8, 2012 8:22 PM - Deirdre: Just confirming that we are playing next Saturday. Also, what time? Tommy has an LFR game in the morning slot.
Jan 8, 2012 3:04 PM - Tommy T: guess you didnt want to do this one last session?
Jan 5, 2012 10:13 AM - Rob R: Man it's been three weeks since we got together, can't wait to get our asses beat again. Where are we again? Surrounded by Minotaurs, Gnolls, Demons & now undead?
Dec 29, 2011 7:06 PM - Capt_Dan: yeah, no way can I do NY's day! I'm also getting into more of a bind with this, I really, really cannot do more than one more session - Jan 8 - so if you need to find some more people, please do. Hursal will go down swinging though!
Dec 29, 2011 6:12 PM - Rob R: I see a session added for New Year's Day. I thought we agreed we weren't going to meet? Looking for confirmation either way.
Dec 21, 2011 6:25 PM - Sebastien: I'll be there. ^_^
Dec 19, 2011 4:55 PM - Rob R: I think the Dragonborn Zealot should definitely take the haunted armor.
Dec 19, 2011 4:54 PM - Rob R: I don't really need either the armor or weapon as I have a +2 weapon and armor and the available options don't wow me.
Dec 19, 2011 4:47 PM - Rob R: There's also the paragon level Headband of Perception - a +3 item bonus to perception checks.
Dec 19, 2011 3:04 PM - Capt_Dan: Quick check - we have a L9-11 Common Helm, L9 Uncommon Weapon and L7 Common Armour. Personally, I'd like to go with a Helm of Battle (all within 5 gain +1 init) and a Battlecrazed Longsword and Haunted Armor. Does anyone else want any items? I'm not desperate for either, but they'd both be useful.
Dec 18, 2011 10:07 PM - Tommy T: Thanks for joining us Sebastien! Hopefully you'll be able to make it to future sessions. Also, in case I don't see any of you at other events: Have a nice holiday!
Dec 18, 2011 9:37 PM - Rob R: Walk - I found a drow in my minis container from the mod I ran at CS. I'm not sure if it's mine or not. I've put it in my dice case for the next time we get together so you can see it.
Dec 18, 2011 11:01 AM - Sebastien: Almost there. :P
Bringing a vampire and a sorcerer
Dec 11, 2011 10:32 AM - Tommy T: unfortunately i will be 20-30 minutes late. Bus issues.
Dec 10, 2011 7:04 PM - Tommy T: Unfortunately I couldn't find anyone with the time. Looks like we'll need a companion character.
Dec 10, 2011 4:46 PM - Rob R: Tommy - were you able to rustle someone up to play tomorrow? If not, Walk will you have the ranged striker companion character?
Dec 3, 2011 11:59 PM - Rob R: As far as proceeding in general, I guess we can discuss tomorrow over some whipped Orcs (hopefully). I'm open to pretty much any ideas that conclude with helping fulfill Needlenose's promise to Sir Stuffy, Bootlicker of Bahamut - I Kid, I Kid..........
Dec 3, 2011 11:56 PM - Rob R: Followed Deirdre's lead and posted some availability
Dec 3, 2011 8:39 PM - Deirdre: I've updated my availability. I'd be willing to hop back in if everyone agrees on a day that I can make.
Dec 3, 2011 8:16 PM - Tommy T: Ok. So it seems we're down 2 strikers. And we'll be down 1 leader pretty much after this next venture into the abbey. How do we want to proceed knowing we'll eventually be down to 3 players?
Dec 3, 2011 7:22 PM - WalK: Be prepared to level up.
Dec 2, 2011 4:17 PM - WalK: If you think it would be best to switch, you can do so. I really don't know how much longer this could last.
Dec 1, 2011 7:50 PM - Tracy: So that leaves us with 2 leaders/controller/defender...WalK, would you be opposed to me switching to a striker for the next session so we can balance out? Also, do you think we could finish this next week? If not, the next week will be down to 3 players.
Dec 1, 2011 7:33 PM - Deirdre: Sorry Walk, someone else is going to have to take over in ruining all your fun. ;P
Dec 1, 2011 6:04 PM - Vlad: I have to drop out as well. I am at Anonycon this weekend, and I have to leave town on a job assignment for up to two weeks after that.
Dec 1, 2011 3:24 PM - Tommy T: sounds good to me!
Dec 1, 2011 2:36 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, I say we rush the temple.
Dec 1, 2011 1:20 PM - Tracy: I can do the 4th, but I will be in DC the 11th.
Dec 1, 2011 12:19 PM - WalK: Please do, Rob.
Dec 1, 2011 9:49 AM - Rob R: I will bring the tiles again unless you tell me otherwise Walk
Dec 1, 2011 9:49 AM - Rob R: Have fun on Wednesdays Deirdre. Sad to see Abigail go
Dec 1, 2011 1:58 AM - WalK: Well, I guess that makes things a little easier. Sorry to see you go D.
Dec 1, 2011 12:19 AM - Deirdre: I've joined the Wed night Madness game. Play on Sundays without me plz. Kthnxbai. :p
Nov 30, 2011 9:35 AM - Tracy: @WalK - Are we calling this? There are a lot of games coming up and the holidays. If this isn't decided soon the momentum will be lost.
Nov 29, 2011 12:25 PM - Tracy: I'm pretty filled up this month and my schedule isn't very accomodating. If we're planning on continuing with Saturday's you should carry on without me and I'll join the next Gardmore game to pop up so I can finish it.
Nov 29, 2011 12:23 PM - Tracy: December Availability: Sun 4th, Mon 5th, Tue 6th, Thu 8th, Mon 12th, Tue 13th, Thu 15th, Fri 16th, Mon 19th, Tue 20th, Thu - Sat 22nd - 24th.
Nov 28, 2011 3:41 PM - Capt_Dan: Hey all, I am happy with either day, but I need to know soon if it is to be Saturday, because I need to arrange my life carefully! I still look forward to going through that Temple soon, and returning the Glory of Bahamut!
Nov 25, 2011 7:20 PM - Rob R: I think we were at least leaning toward switching to Saturdays starting Dec 3rd (No game Thanksgiving weekend).
Nov 24, 2011 11:57 PM - Deirdre: Any chance of a Saturday 11am/Monday night game? Or should I just abandon ship? :/
Nov 20, 2011 9:35 AM - Rob R: Aye Aye Captain. I put the wilderness and the dungeon master set in a bag.
Nov 20, 2011 7:05 AM - WalK: Two quick reminders: Be prepared to reach level 7, and Rob please bring the dungeon master set. Thanks.
Nov 20, 2011 12:11 AM - Rob R: I will be there Sunday.
Nov 19, 2011 11:49 PM - WalK: If it's been decided to meet tomorrow, I'll be there.
Nov 19, 2011 9:36 PM - Capt_Dan: WalK hasn't come up yet, but I'm expecting this to be on. Just in case, I'll bring a back-up, everyone attend anyway.
Nov 19, 2011 8:19 PM - Vlad: Are we still meeting tomorrow?
Nov 18, 2011 8:17 PM - Tommy T: I assume we are playing on sunday
Nov 18, 2011 10:01 AM - Rob R: Since Cap't Dan and Tracy can't do this Saturday, are we still meeting this Sunday? (Need to firm up my plans).
Nov 17, 2011 6:03 PM - Vlad: Sat or Sunday works for me (although I can't go past 5 pm-ish on Saturday).
Nov 17, 2011 5:46 PM - Tommy T: either sat or sun works for me.
Nov 17, 2011 10:56 AM - Rob R: Hey, CD, I think it's safe to say we all understand. This is a game and gets trumped by adult stuff sometimes that can't get avoided. Walk removes the zones when you left and we slugged it there. Some lucky dice rolls and others stuff(?) helped us squeak by.
Nov 17, 2011 12:41 AM - Capt_Dan: Hey all, first, really sorry for running out last Sunday - I dropped the ball and had to make a sudden reprioritisation in my life. I take it we (you!) defeated the Beholder-thing?? I'm still up for and in this, but moving off Sunday is going to cause me 'issues', though not irresolvable. I have no problem going to a weeknight, excepting Thursday, and will try and make work whatever people need.
Nov 17, 2011 12:21 AM - Deirdre: Saturday would work for me this week. (And presumably for the future).
Nov 16, 2011 10:50 AM - Rob R: As far as this week, I am available Thursday evening. I already have plans for Friday. Next week, I am available Monday and Wednesday evening. Not sure about Tuesday & Thursday yet.
Nov 15, 2011 2:13 PM - Tracy: I can't on Saturday this week, I have Star Wars.
Nov 15, 2011 2:12 PM - Rob R: First things first - congratulations on the job. Second - I am open to rescheduling. Swapping Saturday(s) for Sunday(s) would work for me.
Nov 15, 2011 1:43 PM - Tracy: I'm open for rescheduling but I am out of town the 21st - 28th. I'm thinking this will go further than 1 more session yes?
Nov 15, 2011 1:33 PM - Deirdre: So, I finally got a job (Wahoo!), but I work starting this Thurs/Fri/Sun (Boooo!) until 7pm. If you want to continue without me I'd be sad, but understanding. Otherwise, I'm open to ideas.
Nov 15, 2011 10:23 AM - Tommy T: @James- I think it depends a lot of player choices, role playing durations and so on, but in all likelihood it will take us more than 3 sessions.
Nov 14, 2011 1:54 PM - James L: I'm confused, can this adventure really be completed in just 3 sessions?
Nov 13, 2011 10:09 AM - Tracy: I'm still willing to go, but my room mate told me that if I go and give y'all whatever I've got than you won't want to play with me any more. I'm sorry guys, if it were just the sniffles I would show up.
Nov 13, 2011 10:08 AM - Tracy: My most sincere apologies gang but I am a snotty, swollen, disgusting sick bastard right now. I canceled my pathfinder game yesterday so I could be better for today, however I can't open my right eye because it's so swollen. :(
Nov 12, 2011 10:32 PM - Vlad: I am tempted to follow the wise course of action - return to the village, report, then back for exploration of the temple
Nov 12, 2011 9:59 PM - Deirdre: Abigail wants to get in that temple. Leave no stone unturned!
Nov 9, 2011 2:36 PM - Tracy: I'll go where ever my audience needs me.
Nov 9, 2011 2:35 PM - Rob R: Even if it needs to be T Needlenose and Hursal alone.... we will return.
Nov 9, 2011 2:14 PM - Capt_Dan: Hursal is comfortable with that course of action, as long as we commit to returning. There is also the issue of that other party skulking around - they might have been sent by Padraig as well... or they could be common looters!
Nov 9, 2011 1:06 PM - Rob R: Also, there is the "sage" in town who might have more information about the tower.
Nov 9, 2011 1:06 PM - Rob R: We can always take one more look see, maybe poke around the "village" as mercenaries to gather recon and then hightail it back to Lord Paidrag. I don't think we should enter the temple or try to enter the tower again until after we report back to Lord Paidrag.
Nov 8, 2011 10:51 PM - Capt_Dan: Well, we had a proposed plan to spend another long morning checking out the place, before returning to Winterhaven with our information and completing our duties. Needlenose is aware of some disturbing information relating to a Beholder threat, which Hursal can corroborate, and Hursal is determined to at least recover relics from the temple.
Nov 8, 2011 12:17 AM - Tommy T: Just to speed things along for next week: Our characters are currently camping on the edge of the wilderness just outside the abbey and we've gathered a fair amount of information. Are we going in for a second excursion (if so, to what location in the abbey) or are we going to return to Wintercrest to relay our info?
Nov 6, 2011 9:45 AM - Capt_Dan: Don't forget the clocks went back! See you all in an hour... P-raise, Baah-humat!
Nov 6, 2011 3:47 AM - Vlad: Char background:
Izera is a Githzerai Avenger who was a Rrakma (illithid-hunter) warrior in training. The monastery housing Izera was destroyed by an Illithid warband and Izera, the only survivor, fled to The Breach - a realm adjacent to the Elemental Chaos. There, madness slowly creeped into Izera's brain, corrupting the once-noble Githzerai. Just when Izera lost all hope, a random twist of chaos teleported him to Nentir Vale. Thirsty for adventure and company, he will take on any quest.
Nov 5, 2011 9:37 PM - WalK: That's the plan.
Nov 5, 2011 9:34 PM - Tracy: Just to verify...Citi Center tomorrow?
Nov 2, 2011 9:48 AM - Rob R: T Needlenose hails currently from Hammerfast - on those occasions he has need of civilization. Otherwise, he's usually traveling the vale doing "research" on abberations and looking for possible sightings.
Oct 29, 2011 11:42 PM - Deirdre: Ms. Bedeliahooves is the daughter of a Nentir Valian blacksmith. None too taken with her airs of sophistication her Pappy set her out on the road, hoping she'd find a way to reconcile her pretty demeanor with the beast that lurks within.
Oct 29, 2011 11:33 PM - Deirdre: "Well Hellooooo! Soooo pleased to meet you all, My friends call me Abigail, and I'm suuure we'll all be fast friends in no time! Ooooo,a crawl throoough a spooooky old dungeon sounds wonderful! I'm suuuure the architecture is aMOOOOzing. *coughcough* Excuse Me!"
Oct 29, 2011 8:51 PM - Tracy: Stock Vonagon's arrival is heralded throughout the lands. Most towns know he's coming leagues before he ever sets foot inside of them. Renowned in the Nentir Vale through his heroics little introduction is needed...or at least that's what Stock believes...
Oct 29, 2011 5:19 PM - Capt_Dan: Hursal is a Dragonborn Cleric. Left with a temple to Bahamut shortly after Birth, the Platinum Dragon is all he has known. He now walks the roads of the world bringing word of Bahamuts Honour to all who need it, and the occasional martial demonstration to those who REALLY need it...
Oct 29, 2011 3:23 PM - Rob R: T Needlenose is a Dwarven Hunter. He is the sole survivor of his patrol which was wiped out by Beholder Gauths. When he returned to his settlement he found they had been wiped out by mindflayer thralls. Since then he has had a totally rational hatred of abberents.
Oct 29, 2011 12:55 AM - Tommy T: Guerin is a human Battlemind. While young and often pragmatic, he also thrives on conflict. He is often looking for signs of particular activities such as those committed by cults, sentient undead or other chaotic entities. He gives little information about himself and is unfamiliar with the Nentir Vale, as refers to it as a "stop" on his journey.
Oct 28, 2011 9:12 PM - WalK: Please post any background information about your character that you feel is important. I'd specifically like to know where you are from, probably somewhere in the Nentir Vale, but possibly elsewhere. If there's something you'd prefer to keep from the other characters, you can send it by email:
Oct 27, 2011 11:48 PM - Deirdre: Abigail Bedeliahooves!
Oct 27, 2011 9:22 PM - Tommy T: I'm likely to play a defender instead. Looks like we have strikers covered.
Oct 27, 2011 7:23 PM - Deirdre: I've spent the last four hours modding my Minotaur mini for this character...so yeah...I'm excited...
Oct 26, 2011 12:14 PM - Vlad: I feel like I need a lot more supplies first. Maps, minis, status markers, etc. Easy enough to obtain, I am sure, but I am procrastinating with obtaining all that :)
Oct 26, 2011 11:19 AM - T Michael: Unfortunately, I have to drop out. Bummed I will miss this.
Oct 26, 2011 10:37 AM - Tracy: Vlad, ever thought of DM(ing)? I saw you were bumped from Dark Sun and are in danger here if someone jumps in...DM(ing) will *almost* guarantee you some points to prevent that.
Oct 24, 2011 7:54 PM - WalK: A few people have asked about the house rules, and I would be willing to discuss changes if you have a concern.
Oct 24, 2011 1:11 AM - Tracy: My name is Stock Vonagon...surely you've heard of me. While on tour our wagon was ambushed and only I remain. I specialize in maneuvering the battlefield to surround defenders and group enemies for bursts or blasts.
Oct 23, 2011 10:30 PM - Jarrid R: Can I get in you cant make it?
Oct 23, 2011 10:10 PM - Rob R: Abberant Hunting? Yes Psychopath? He doesn't think so
Oct 23, 2011 5:53 PM - Capt_Dan: Is this the same abberant hunting dwarfen psychopath I've met before???
Oct 23, 2011 5:52 PM - Capt_Dan: I would be very grateful if this could start later than the 30th, as I was pretty keen on getting into Johns Fourthcore game. Also, my character is specifically a Dragonborn Cleric (Templar).
Oct 23, 2011 5:00 PM - Rob R: I'm flexible as far as when we start. I'm also considering playing a Dwarven Hunter instead.
Oct 23, 2011 12:38 PM - T Michael: October 30th would be hard for me because of a lot of family commitments.
Oct 23, 2011 11:48 AM - Tommy T: @WalK- I don't mind when we start, as long as you're comfortable with the adventure itself.

@Party- Right now I'm leaning toward a Star Pact Hexblade, but I have a character for each role (battlemind, sentinel or hunter).
Oct 22, 2011 11:01 PM - WalK: I've got the current start date listed as Nov. 6th, but I could probably be ready to run it by Oct. 30th. Let me know when you'd like to start this.
Oct 22, 2011 8:28 PM - T Michael: Would love to play this with you as dm Walk. Depending on the party, I would like to play an eladrin psion or dragonborn cavalier.
Oct 22, 2011 3:10 PM - Capt_Dan: Nice work, thanks!
Oct 22, 2011 3:03 PM - Capt_Dan: I am still unable to join this? WalK - can you put up a placeholder session, that may fix the issue.
Oct 21, 2011 7:47 PM - Capt_Dan: I've not had a problem with citi at the weekend. Could also try Sony, I think their tables are bigger.
Oct 21, 2011 6:49 PM - WalK: It sounds like 11am on Sundays is currently the favorite, but it's still not final. Any ideas on a location? Citi is always a possibility, though it might not be the best choice for a campaign.
Oct 21, 2011 5:46 PM - Matt H: @ James L: No problem by me; I'm just used to LFR, and was surprised by some of the character creation houserules about hybrids and themes and such.
Oct 21, 2011 3:11 PM - Capt_Dan: I have tried to Go In on this a few times now, for no effect. Please be aware, as soon as this issue is fixed I intend to go in, even if my points push someone off the bottom - so please consider me in already. Thanks.
Oct 21, 2011 10:25 AM - James L: Matt H, is there a specific houserule that is causing you conflict? or are you just insulting them as a whole? I can give you a reason why each one exists.
Oct 21, 2011 9:39 AM - Capt_Dan: I agree with Rob, running it on Sundays - or sunday afternoons - would be good. a 4-6 hour session with a little space around it would work well. Sundays at 11AM suits me well. I STILL can't get in...
Oct 21, 2011 9:23 AM - Rob R: Walk - This looks pretty extensive. I'd be up for weekends so that there is a little more continuity. But a recurring weekly day wouldn't do.
Oct 20, 2011 11:14 PM - Capt_Dan: The houserules are James's and reflect issues of balance he saw in the Game, they serve pretty well, I think, but it is always up to the DM if he wants to change them or grant exceptions.
Oct 20, 2011 10:17 PM - Matt H: Also, are the houserules for real? They seem pretty arbitrary...
Oct 20, 2011 10:12 PM - Matt H: I like the idea of Saturdays or Sundays, maybe around 11am?
Oct 20, 2011 5:44 PM - Capt_Dan: I hit "I want in" but it hasn't done anything...
Oct 20, 2011 4:42 PM - Capt_Dan: Great Call, I am really looking forward to getting into this.
Oct 20, 2011 4:27 PM - WalK: Dates, times, and location are still to be determined, and I'm open to suggestions.
