Madness at Gardmore Abbey - Entire Version
Cost: $0.00
Level: 6

First Session: Wednesday -- November 30th, 2011 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 12 sessions

This is the Entire Version with the DM running the entire adventure. It is estimated to take 12 sessions.

This deluxe adventure takes heroes into the ruins of Gardmore Abbey, a monastery that was once the base of a militant order of paladins devoted to Bahamut. According to legend, the paladins brought a dark artifact back from a far crusade and stored it in their abbey for safekeeping, and evil forces gathered to assault the abbey and take it back. What the legends don’t tell is that this artifact was actually the Deck of Many Things, a force of pure Chaos.

This adventure brings characters into the extensive dungeons beneath the ruins—dungeons that are warped and twisted with the raw forces of Chaos surrounding the cards of the deck.

According to studies online it is completely non-linear, players can explore the Abbey in any manner they choose. This adventure covers levels 6-8 and is pretty long.

Feb 29, 2012 11:35 AM - T Michael: I apologize to everyone, but I have come down with the flu and will have to cancel tonight's game. Fever and coughing do not make for good DM'ing, especially for storytelling and running combats.
Feb 20, 2012 11:14 AM - T Michael: Given some unavailability, we will not be playing tonight (Monday, February 20th). We will resume on Wednesday, February 29th. I will send a review ahead of next week.
Feb 20, 2012 12:15 AM - thekraftykat: Just in case anyone still checks this... I don't know when we are playing. thekraftykat @ gmail.com
Feb 1, 2012 2:33 PM - Deirdre: Unbeknownst to the other party members there has been an unwitting stowaway within the group. After the next extended rest they are surprised to find their Fingle has been mysteriously replaced with...dun da da duuuun: Melissa Mondy, human mage. Plucky and impetuous, this studied young woman has made it her quest to secure the Deck of Many Things from those who may use it for their own selfish purposes. For the Deck is an artifact of Chaos and can never truly be controlled!
Feb 1, 2012 2:27 PM - Deirdre: @Dan: Sure did! And I hope you don't mind I took a few liberties with your character story, though I tried to maintain the spirit.
Feb 1, 2012 1:57 PM - T Michael: I am looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. I may run 15 minutes late, but will strive to be on time.
Feb 1, 2012 1:02 PM - Capt_Dan: @Deirdre, did you get my email? and did you like the backstory? I ws thinking of using it as a jump off point for a weekly short story blog...
Jan 29, 2012 1:53 PM - Capt_Dan: Hey, Diedre, if you want to take over fingle, I'd be happy to send you his stats, backstory motivations etc! Let me know.
Jan 29, 2012 1:10 PM - Deirdre: Hey thanks Tracy! Also, I'd love to take over Dan's wizard. Running Binx is pretty simplistic. If it turns out to be too much I can also adapt the character to a Companion Character using the rules from the DMG. Hope that's ok! See you all Wed!
Jan 28, 2012 9:18 PM - Tracy: Deirdre - just saw your link. That's bad ass! Way to go! :)
Jan 20, 2012 3:34 PM - T Michael: I put up some new dates. Unfortunately, this coming Monday does not work for me, so we will skip a week and resume on Wednesday, Feb 1. Also, note that we will have to skip the week of Feb.8 due to work travel. After that we should be good through the end of February. I hope everyone is excited to continue on to the abbey, tombs, and catacombs.
Jan 18, 2012 5:39 PM - Capt_Dan: @T Michael - I should have you covered.
Jan 18, 2012 1:25 PM - Deirdre: False alarm everyone! I'll be there tonight. Game ON!
Jan 18, 2012 11:31 AM - T Michael: Deirdre you will be missed. For this evening, could someone bring a battle mat? I forgot mine at home and may not have time to go back for it.
Jan 16, 2012 6:29 PM - T Michael: Sad to see Fingle retire after this week. Hopefully, the war wizard will help the party explore the tower and find the winterbound codex.
Jan 16, 2012 1:56 PM - Capt_Dan: To my deep (Deep!) frustration, it looks like one of my classes this year will clash with this adventure after this week. Barring a miracle, I will have to bow out after Weds. Fingle may yet go out in a blaze of Glory though...
Jan 7, 2012 2:40 AM - thekraftykat: Hey guys,
Sorry I could not be there Wednesday, it was a family obligation that i could not get out of. Anyways, it sounds like you all had a great time. :) As for changing the January 25 meet-up, I'm fine with meeting some other night. I'll get back to you on what day might work best for me. See you on the 11th. :-)
Jan 6, 2012 7:21 PM - Capt_Dan: I actually cannot make that change - I could go the other way though, to Thursday.
Jan 6, 2012 5:20 PM - T Michael: I have a conflict on the night of January 25th, would everyone be willing to play on Monday, January 23rd instead so we do not miss a week?
Jan 6, 2012 4:12 PM -        AndySAE: One other thing... that pervert from last night has joined the meetup and will be playing at our table next week... I hope that's alright with everyone? Over & Out...
Jan 6, 2012 4:10 PM -        AndySAE: All that talk about the owlbear last night made me wonder... an even tastier beast to kill might be a ChulBear or how about a Lob-Steer? D&D if you're listening, put that in the next monster manual.
Jan 6, 2012 4:06 PM -        AndySAE: Cool video! (though I might bring a metal detector next week)
Jan 5, 2012 3:06 PM - T Michael: Thank you for the link Deidre! Very cool video. I hope everyone enjoyed the confrontation with the beholder. Please remember to level up to 7th level for next week.
Jan 5, 2012 1:21 AM - Deirdre: Here's a link to me on the teevee if you're interested. :) http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-500202_162-57348612/more-and-more-women-embracing-gun-ownership/
Jan 4, 2012 7:03 PM -        AndySAE: I'm leaving work right now. Of course, start w/o me...
Jan 4, 2012 5:54 PM - Deirdre: I'll bring my defender-y barbarian. Binx is easy enough to manage if we need an additional PC. :)
Jan 4, 2012 5:24 PM - Sean: I will be there. And if we encounter anything that vaguely looks like a nail, well, I've got a hammer.
Jan 4, 2012 4:47 PM -        AndySAE: Work is pushing me to the brink; it's our year end and these next 2 days are huge. I am at best going to be late, and it may end up that I can't come at all. I am going to make every superhuman effort to come; those that know me know I don't no-show lightly. Worst of all,I don't want to miss Volker's triumphant return or what seems to be climaxing in an epic fight. I will do my best...
Jan 4, 2012 3:59 PM - Deirdre: I might be running a couple minutes late today. Or I might be on time! In either case feel free to start right at 7. :)
Jan 3, 2012 10:42 PM - T Michael: We are playing this Wednesday (Jan 4th). Kat will be missed for the week, but I have asked my friend and great player, Volker Detering, to replace James in the group. He plans to play a dwarf barbarian.
Jan 3, 2012 7:35 PM - Capt_Dan: We're down two, but I have no problem going on - though I can also wait a week as well - could happily run my Delve two days in a row also...
Jan 3, 2012 7:17 PM -        AndySAE: Are we down 1 or down 2? Still a go or one more week delay? I am game to play, but can skip a week if necessary...
Jan 2, 2012 11:23 AM - thekraftykat: I don't believe I'll be able to make this Wednesday's session. I have a commitment that I can't get out of that has come up. Sorry about this. I'll diffently be there next week, though. :) Have fun!
Dec 20, 2011 2:15 PM - T Michael: James, you would be missed. Are you committed to running winter of the witch concurrent with Dan?
Dec 20, 2011 1:24 PM - James L: I can't play twice a week. Also, I did more research and it seems this adventure will take at least 12 sessions to finish. The way it seems right now, with my other commitments of DM'ing, my staying in this adventure in January is very questionable. Sorry
Dec 15, 2011 1:49 PM - T Michael: I hope everyone enjoyed last night. Please remember to keep note of HPs, healing surges (you were down 2 healing surges at the beginning of the day), and daily powers. The next room will be fun! Happy holidays to you and your families.
Dec 14, 2011 6:36 PM - Capt_Dan: sorry - running very slightly late, due to printer issues.
Dec 9, 2011 9:24 PM -        AndySAE: BTW, after a few near death experiences, I have made some changes to Sir Reevus. He now carries a heavy round silver shield with an engraved golden sunburst of a smiley faced Pelor... and he now carries a slightly smaller hammer (no maul). Also changed one feat to Superior Will...
Dec 9, 2011 9:19 PM -        AndySAE: By the way, fun session. Two of the most iconic D&D monsters in one night...
Dec 7, 2011 10:05 AM - James L: Sorry, I can't make today. A friend is visiting and she was supposed to have dinner with a client, but that got cancelled so the only time she can meet my daughter for the first time is tonight.
Dec 6, 2011 11:46 AM - Capt_Dan: I should be okay for twice a week, weeknights - as long as I then keep my weekends clear...
Dec 6, 2011 9:15 AM - Deirdre: No problem here unless I pick up a second job.
Dec 5, 2011 5:16 PM - Sean: No problem here, two games a week is my goal.
Dec 5, 2011 5:07 PM - James L: Thanks! Now how many of us can actually play twice a week? T Michael, Sean, Deirdre, Dan; we're all involved in WotW. I can't play twice a week. I might have to delay WotW. None of you have that problem?
Dec 5, 2011 12:57 PM - James L: Not putting the rest of these sessions on the calendar means it's not readily apparent that future sessions may collide with Winter of the Witch. A few of us are in or involved with WotW, and I'm not sure how many of us are able to play twice a week. I just want to address it now so the game does not fall apart come the first week in January.
Dec 3, 2011 1:00 PM -        AndySAE: correction: two massive OGRES (not orcs)
Dec 2, 2011 9:47 PM -        AndySAE: Sir Reevus of Whitecastle is still scratching his head; he now believes that his cleric must also be a powerful mage! (He can't explain otherwise how quickly he disappeared while he was between those two massive orcs...)

He also has his doubts but must trust Lord Padraig that even Binx can be a great hero. Oh and damn that Sir Oakley; he's so f'ng perfect!! Reevus will show him just how holy he can be....
Dec 2, 2011 2:42 PM - T Michael: You did kill all ten orcs who started the encounter and I will award you full XP for it. Running away was the right call, but as Lord Padraig told you, your recon and mapping quest was only partially completed. Sir Oakley may be disappointed you left him behind. You have decisions to make on what you want to do next.
Dec 2, 2011 12:38 PM - Capt_Dan: And they didn't want to break their teeth on the Wizard...
Dec 2, 2011 12:34 PM - Sean: The ogres were partial to Sir Reevus because he's so gosh-darned GOOD.
Dec 2, 2011 11:38 AM - Deirdre: @James: You haven't been in a party with Binx before...she's not afraid to cut and run when the odds are against her.
Dec 2, 2011 10:10 AM - James L: Forced to flee by the hulking Ogres who came close to smashing Sir Reevus to a pulp. (I'm trying to remember but I think that is the first time I've ever fled in 4E)
Nov 30, 2011 12:06 PM - T Michael: Hey everyone, I am going to add dates. Probably the Wednesday nights after Christmas and New Year's and then Wednesdays through the remainder of January.
Nov 30, 2011 10:10 AM - James L: Hey the Saturday Gardmore game seems to be falling apart. T Michael It might be helpful to put all the sessions you think we might need on the calendar right now, because I can easily see people thinking they are only committing to 3 weeks because that's all that shows.
Nov 30, 2011 2:03 AM - Deirdre: I'll give it a shot. :)
Nov 29, 2011 8:28 PM - T Michael: Deirdre, you should come by tomorrow night. We might find playing with six works.
Nov 29, 2011 4:28 PM - Capt_Dan: Yes, sorry - thought it was 6...
Nov 29, 2011 4:02 PM - Deirdre: It seems this game is capped at five players? I'm not going to bump anyone seeing as I have less than ideal availability. :)
Nov 29, 2011 2:44 PM -        AndySAE: T: I will bring some monster minis. Judging by the box cover and the tokens revealed on the back, I have a fair idea of some of what we'll face...
Nov 29, 2011 2:44 PM - Capt_Dan: @Deirdre, that Halfling thief might be a very useful addition to this party! Otherwise, I'm going to retool my Mage into a Dungeon Looter...
Nov 29, 2011 12:18 PM - T Michael: Well, you know I love warlocks!
Nov 29, 2011 11:27 AM - James L: I tend to play Half-Orcs all the time. Since there are two defenders, I'm going to try something outside my comfort zone and play a Drow Warlock(Hexblade). One who is quite cunning and a great liar. Fey Pact
Nov 28, 2011 5:53 PM - T Michael: In order to facilitate the feel of the campaign and that your party that has adventured previously, when we first sit down, please be prepared to present your character to the group for 2 minutes, telling us about background, trained skills, weapon choice, personality traits, etc.
Nov 26, 2011 10:52 PM -        AndySAE: Sorry for anyone's inconvenience; perhaps this makes me chaotic evil? Who knows, but I am compelled to commit....
Nov 26, 2011 10:47 PM -        AndySAE: I commit. I will play a Paladin of Pelor. Sir Reevus is an intense and overly righteous human. Howe er, He seems not to know his own god very well at times, though he is truly earnest in his faith...
Nov 26, 2011 1:26 AM - Chen: I don't want to be bumped; I want to be DM-ing after a few more rounds of game.
Nov 25, 2011 10:18 PM - Sean: Yeah, PLEASE don't bump me off the game... I'm trying hard to get established as the new guy in town. Really looking forward to this game!
Nov 25, 2011 9:45 PM -        AndySAE: Have been eying this game from afar for a week or so, but wanted to be sure before I threw my hat in the ring. I can commit to the time & locales, but hate potentially booting anyone else from the game...
Nov 25, 2011 7:12 PM - Capt_Dan: KraftyKat - a Swordmage could be a good fit here, I think. I still see this party going towards the amoral/Umaligned/'Dark Side' so maybe bare that in mind. A Genasi or githzerai would be good, or Warforged!
Nov 25, 2011 5:41 PM - thekraftykat: So psyched about this. It was highly recommended by Tracy :) I was thinking about playing a Swordmage. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!
Nov 23, 2011 10:33 PM - Chen: Sounds great, I am taking a character from the 4th edition Player's Handbook.
Nov 23, 2011 5:06 PM - Capt_Dan: Deidre, I'd be happy to have you in as well; if your times do change, I'm happy to renogatiate dates of sessions.
Nov 23, 2011 5:05 PM - Capt_Dan: Chen, these games are one-shots, so you create a new character from scratch, at the right level and then play them. Once the adventure is complete, they are then retired (though I have seen a few turn up in other places). Just sign up and write in what character you are thinking of going with - we look to be a pretty unaligned / less-than-good bunch, at the moment...
Nov 23, 2011 1:39 PM - Chen: I really want to join this one but I need to create a level 6 character, are you who will be playing fine with it?
Nov 23, 2011 1:13 AM - John: I'm in a similar boat. I'd make an effort to attend every session but I'm not always a lock for having those nights open until a few days prior. If that works, great. If not, no harm done. Just let me know your preference.

For clarity, my boat is a catamaran.
Nov 22, 2011 11:11 PM - James L: Deirdre since this is not looking full you wouldn't be taking anyone's seat. I'd be happy to have you join for as long as possible.
Nov 22, 2011 8:00 PM - Deirdre: I'd like to join this game as my current work schedule won't allow me to play in the other Madness Game, but I don't want to sign up and then have to stiff you guys if work changes. Give me your thoughts.
Nov 22, 2011 5:54 PM - James L: My name be Thargus, half-orc Mercenary and I go berserk when mine eye catch the glint of steel or gold!
Nov 22, 2011 5:46 PM - Capt_Dan: I can see a very different party for this go around - i intend to play an unaligned Mage with no empathy...
Nov 22, 2011 5:21 PM - T Michael: I would love a gith psion. And the great thing about the deck of many things is that the story line changes based on variability of which card you have and what cards others have. In case the picture did not clue everyone in, the party starts this adventure in possession of the jester card.
Nov 22, 2011 5:10 PM - Rob R: Maybe with a Gith Psion?
Nov 22, 2011 5:09 PM - Rob R: Since this mod only goes 6 to 8 (according to WoTC), and therefore is shorter than I was expecting, I might have to the time available to run thru it again.
Nov 21, 2011 12:20 PM - T Michael: As I spend more time studying this mod, it has so many very written NPC's and villains as well as a number of options, paths, and possibilities in the encounters. Players will be able to go any direction they choose. I am very psyched to DM this.
Nov 21, 2011 11:19 AM - T Michael: I am open to changing the location. Any suggestions on a quality space, beer would be preferable but not necessary.
Nov 20, 2011 9:09 PM - Deirdre: Also Wed night @Au Bon Gout seems to be Pathfinder night. The noise level is pretty incredible. And the heat. O.O, but yes, beer drinking is awesome.
Nov 18, 2011 10:24 AM - James L: sweet
Nov 17, 2011 6:23 PM - T Michael: Fortunately James this mod is well written and has great flavor text and artwork, which I intend to share. Rob R, you should join, I would love having you.
Nov 17, 2011 5:35 PM - Ross H: You know we love you, James.
Nov 17, 2011 5:33 PM - James L: Man I come across as a sourpuss all the time. I just identify with Carrie so strongly, it's like I want to lock everyone in the gym and make them all pay...
Nov 17, 2011 5:28 PM - Ross H: Maaaaan, James! She goes *nuts* at the end?? How about a SPOILER WARNING next time :P
Nov 17, 2011 5:26 PM - James L: It's like someone telling you the spoilers, "uh there's this book by Steven King, and this girl is psychic and she goes to prom, then blood spills on her, she goes nuts" Cool story Bro!
Nov 17, 2011 5:25 PM - James L: It's amazing how much interpretation DMs add when they run things. Usually for the worse (I'm a sourpuss) Last time I asked a DM to run something special for me because it was written by an awesome author, he left out all the "read-aloud" text and didn't bother showing any of the awesome artwork to us.
Nov 17, 2011 5:21 PM - Capt_Dan: I agree, that's why I chose to go back in - I was very surprised by how different the Slaying Stone was when I ran it, from when I played.
Nov 17, 2011 4:52 PM - Rob R: I'm really tempted to RSVP for this as the adventure is something that seems like it could be approached from multiple directions. Probably has alot of replay enjoyability (other than any big suprises obviously).
Nov 17, 2011 3:50 PM - T Michael: I would like to use the cafe for the first and maybe second sessions, but given that Madness could go a long time, we may want to move somewhere more comfortable.
Nov 17, 2011 3:24 PM - James L: It's a cafe. It sucks, it's hot as hell even in winter. I would much prefer Citicenter, but the cafe lets you drink beer.
Nov 15, 2011 5:31 PM - Sean: What is the location?
Nov 15, 2011 4:29 PM - Ross H: Yeah, unfortunately the current scheduling conflicts with our ongoing WOBS campaign (Wednesdays).
Nov 15, 2011 4:28 PM - Capt_Dan: I was holding off because I'm already in the oth Gardmore campaign, but will probably get in on this. But you're right about the numbers. Personally, I think this would go best over weeknights for a longer period...
Nov 15, 2011 2:03 PM - James L: I keep thinking why isn't this filled up already. I think I know why. The Campaign Games group is about 20 regulars. 6 of them are in a home campaign, 6 of them are already playing Gardmore on Saturdays. The rest are split because some can do weekends only or weekdays only, some are in other games.
Nov 6, 2011 11:01 PM - T Michael: The god of death is unsettled, so anyone choosing to worship the god of death and derive powers from him/her, should talk with me during character creation.
Nov 6, 2011 10:59 PM - T Michael: The only deity caveat is that the Raven Queen and Orcus are dead. This mod will take place in a world after the events of Death's Reach (E1), Kingdom of Ghouls (E2), and Prince of Undeath (E3).
Nov 6, 2011 10:56 PM - T Michael: Players should bring a 6th level character. Please note that as DM I will allow the gods to have many names and manifestations, so players can feel free to chose the god they worship from standard D&D, LFR, Eberron, etc.
