Dungeon Delve
Cost: $0.00
Level: 0

First Session: Thursday -- January 19th, 2012 -- 12:14 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 1 session

The original Dungeon Delve concept which appeared at the 1998 GenCon Game Fair aimed to turn D&D into a more competitive experience. Instead of cooperative storytelling and roleplaying, in which the DM takes on a more neutral role and arbiter and narrator, the Delves can be used to test the skill of both players and the DM. It becomes an exciting game of survival of the fittest as adventurers enter dungeons and try to overcome the obstacles set before them.

The first 4E delve collection was published in the Dungeon Delve book. It contains several masterpieces of encounter design. They are intended to challenge the players and force them to change the tactics they are used to. There are delves in that book for each level from 1-30. There are more delves published than the ones in the "Dungeon Delve" book. There are excellent delves in "Open Grave", "Demonomicon", "Draconomicon", and Dungeon Mag: "Crown of the Troll King lvl 11", "Coppernights Salvation lvl 1", "Battle of the Witchlight Hermitage lvl 4", "A Knight in Shadowghast Manor lvl 6", "Going Ape! lvl 6", "Dead by Dawn lvl 2", "Down the Goblin Hole lvl 2", "Sunken Tower of the Marsh Mystic lvl 3", "The Wayward Wyrmling lvl 2", "The Runecutter's Rune lvl 9", "Rumble in the Valley lvl 6", "Fjorin's Foothold lvl 4", and 9 Delves from the Delve Nights program that are as good or better than ones in the Delve book.

Most of these delves are older and came out at the same time as the first Player's Handbook. The DM should replace any monsters that have subsequently been printed in the Monster Vault or MM3. Otherwise, the DM should adjust the monsters by adding half-level to all their damage and giving Brutes +2 to hit, Soldiers -2 to hit, and let Solos act twice and remove stun/daze between actions.

There are also self-published ones from our new contest here Read More

The DM should also state which level they will run.

Jan 26, 2012 12:28 PM - Tracy: I would love a lair assault but I'm swamped on Saturday as well. :( Voting is up. :)
Jan 25, 2012 11:27 AM - Jensen: Busy feb 4th. I would love to run the next lair assault. There so much fun
Jan 25, 2012 9:20 AM - James L: Do any of you want to run "The Talon of Umberlee - Lair Assault" on Saturday Feb 4th at the Compleat Strat?
Jan 23, 2012 7:53 PM - John McCullough: I don't think we need to go to Essentials only. I think we need to go "figure out your next actions during other people's turns" only.If your initiative comes up, and that's when you start planning your turn, it's gonna take forever.

It's alright to do this once in a while (sometimes the board really does change enough that you to rethink everything), but most turns you should know which actions you are taking and have all the necessary dice in your hand, ready to roll when your turn is calle
Jan 21, 2012 5:51 PM - Tracy: Old One Eye's biggest regret was not being able to get anyone to walk the plank! Argh...
Jan 21, 2012 5:48 PM - Tracy: Thanks James, I think that for the purposes of Delves like this where we need to finish within the time frame we should totally do essentials only. Except maybe rule that the Skald's aura becomes 10 at paragon and 15 at epic?
Jan 21, 2012 5:16 PM - Xerek: I'll second that, loved the theme, worked really well together. Makes me want to play more in that sort of environment (or a full 3D environment i.e. underwater). I'd be open to trying a few games of essential only chars as it can be super quick to make a new char that way, but hesitant to block out so many of the awesome races/classes/feats etc.
Jan 21, 2012 4:15 PM - James L: Thanks Tracy. For your first time DM'ing that was outstanding. Loved the pirates, especially old one-eye. Now I need to figure out why we couldn't finish 3 encounters in 4 hours! What the heck??? We were all experienced, why is the game like this? I am thinking about Essentials Only from now on... any complaints?
Jan 19, 2012 12:01 PM - Tracy: Sounds exciting. I can't wait to get my feet wet - this is my first attempt at running 4.0 via this site. Thanks all for being my Guinea Pigs. :)
Jan 19, 2012 11:55 AM - James L: Mareetz, Windsoul Genasi, Telekinetic Psion. Through sheer power of will he can fly, re-arrange molecules, toss enemies around like feathers in the wind. He wears "TidalWave" his Seashimmer Cloak that is always streaming phantom rivulets of water.
Jan 16, 2012 10:32 PM - Xerek: By too late, I meant it was 3 in the morning. My gith silver glaive +4 could use a name though, if ur feeling creative
Jan 16, 2012 10:14 PM - Tracy: It's not too late Xerek. If anyone is having trouble naming your items let me know and I'll help out, but don't forget to post your weapon, or armor, or whatever you want to name that has a special meaning to your character. :)
Jan 16, 2012 9:22 PM - Xerek: @James I have Rituals that can give everyone (up to 8) a swim speed, underwater breathing etc, so not worries
Jan 16, 2012 9:20 PM - James L: I hope I can swim... maybe I'll play a Psion, but still choosing.
Jan 16, 2012 3:39 AM - Xerek: I am Adeyu, a Gith Artificer. I have spent my life on boats after escaping the mindflayers. If *It'sTooLateToThinkOfAName*, my Glaive, can't keep pirates and monsters at bay, then my tinctures can ensure no pirates or monsters of the deep can forcibly take the ship.
Jan 15, 2012 10:04 PM - Ross H: Designation: X-5. Despite my fervent wish to *never* *again* go on an adventure, I find myself once again pulled away from my endless effort to learn a more peaceable trade. It's this stupid "rage switch" I have built into my head that's stuck to "on"! (Circlet of Indomitability. +2 will, but causes X-5 to charge into battle despite his preference for exploring the world of baked goods).
Jan 15, 2012 8:46 PM - John McCullough: I am Shaddikar the free, and I bring doom and destruction to slavers, pirates and tyrants of all kinds. There are no chains that can hold me and my trusty armor Bondbreaker (+4 ringmail of escape).
Jan 15, 2012 7:12 PM - John McCullough: Jensen or Xerek, can one of you play a ritual caster with some water-type rituals? Perhaps freedom of movement and water breathing?
Jan 15, 2012 1:16 PM - John McCullough: Well, berserkers are about 50-50. But if we have only four players, I'll probably stay in defender mode most of the time.
Jan 15, 2012 12:51 AM - Ross H: John, is your berzerker mostly a defender or a striker? I'm considering playing a warforged barbarian (another variant on X-5), but don't want to overlap too much...
Jan 13, 2012 12:07 PM - Xerek: @Tracy I just wanted to let you know that i'm accidentally double booked. If i get 5 PCs (on a Thurs for LFR, not the easiest task) then i'm going to run that game, otherwise i'll be here. I advertised for this game in case players would rather jump ship to your game. My bad, i'll make a decision Sunday or Monday.
Jan 12, 2012 1:19 PM - Capt_Dan: Think I have to drop this - over keen again! Unless you move it into the week after?
Jan 5, 2012 1:08 PM - Capt_Dan: Nice.
Jan 5, 2012 1:05 PM - Tracy: C_D: Your armor is actually called 'Mermaid's Lung'. There is no other like it in the world. Highly sought after by pirates, sailors, and an angry mind-flayer named Sordamonon who was the last to possess the armor until it was stolen.
Dec 21, 2011 7:50 PM - Capt_Dan: FYI - Fishscale Armor (Scale/hide)
Dec 21, 2011 7:49 PM - Capt_Dan: I am Caggan, Dragonborn Blackguard of Bane. My Sword is my Baneblade, a +4 Vicious Sword. I live for the battle, and to make my foes final action, before their brutal death, to soil themselves.
Dec 21, 2011 5:39 PM - Tracy: After you've selected your equipment I want you to name 1 item and post what it is. Like Drizz't has Icingdeath and Twinkle (scimitars), Wulfgar has Aegis Fang (hammer), Artemis Enteri has Charon's Claw (long sword), etc. Whatever you decide. I want to tie it into the story. Pirates love booty. :)
Dec 20, 2011 10:56 AM - Tracy: This adventure is for level 18 characters and will involve lots and lots of water...you have been warned. You will have time to perform a few rituals before casting off. Bon Voyage!
Dec 20, 2011 10:54 AM - Tracy: The 'Traveler's Tear' pillaged the battered Sword Coast for many years before finally being taken down by Captain Duerdomont...that was almost 50 years ago. Suddenly sightings of the long forgotten ship have started to surface again. You are tasked with putting an end to these rumors - or to send 'Travelers Tear' back to Davey Jones Locker...
