Dungeon Delve
Cost: $0.00
Level: 0

First Session: Monday -- February 27th, 2012 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 1 session

The original Dungeon Delve concept which appeared at the 1998 GenCon Game Fair aimed to turn D&D into a more competitive experience. Instead of cooperative storytelling and roleplaying, in which the DM takes on a more neutral role and arbiter and narrator, the Delves can be used to test the skill of both players and the DM. It becomes an exciting game of survival of the fittest as adventurers enter dungeons and try to overcome the obstacles set before them.

The first 4E delve collection was published in the Dungeon Delve book. It contains several masterpieces of encounter design. They are intended to challenge the players and force them to change the tactics they are used to. There are delves in that book for each level from 1-30. There are more delves published than the ones in the "Dungeon Delve" book. There are excellent delves in "Open Grave", "Demonomicon", "Draconomicon", and Dungeon Mag: "Crown of the Troll King lvl 11", "Coppernights Salvation lvl 1", "Battle of the Witchlight Hermitage lvl 4", "A Knight in Shadowghast Manor lvl 6", "Going Ape! lvl 6", "Dead by Dawn lvl 2", "Down the Goblin Hole lvl 2", "Sunken Tower of the Marsh Mystic lvl 3", "The Wayward Wyrmling lvl 2", "The Runecutter's Rune lvl 9", "Rumble in the Valley lvl 6", "Fjorin's Foothold lvl 4", and 9 Delves from the Delve Nights program that are as good or better than ones in the Delve book.

Most of these delves are older and came out at the same time as the first Player's Handbook. The DM should replace any monsters that have subsequently been printed in the Monster Vault or MM3. Otherwise, the DM should adjust the monsters by adding half-level to all their damage and giving Brutes +2 to hit, Soldiers -2 to hit, and let Solos act twice and remove stun/daze between actions.

There are also self-published ones from our new contest here Read More

The DM should also state which level they will run.

Mar 8, 2012 8:02 AM - Matt H: @Tracy: Thanks! It was that set's maiden voyage, and they found themselves without a captain...
Mar 7, 2012 11:49 PM - Tracy: M-O-O-N that spells voting. Also, Matt - I ended up with 1 of your d20's. I need to get this back to you. :)
Feb 29, 2012 3:31 PM - Matt H: I think the controller-y powers are also what allows for subjectivity of playstyle and personalization in character building. When you're channeled too directly into a base role of just dealing damage, it becomes very clear that the PC who does X damage is weaker than the PC doing X+1, and that can be a turn-off to a lot of players (especially those who find Thieves boring to play). When you're trying to compare X+prone (or whatever control effect) to X+1, things become much more interesting.
Feb 29, 2012 3:22 PM - Tracy: But I think in general everyone is a controller in some way or another. Strikers that can hit multiple enemies when up against minions become controllers. A Defender that shifts around or moves enemies to try to stay sticky is a controller. A leader (I look to you Bard) who is almost completely about forced or granted movement is a controller. I miss upgraded status effects, 4.0 touched on it (3 failed saves and you become a statue), but I miss how sickened became nauseated became....
Feb 29, 2012 3:17 PM - Tracy: In almost every pre essentials printed source it says "your secondary role is ______ ". Ideally they should have identified the scaling damage threshold, what is a controlling power, how does a defender defend, and what defines a leader. Give each class a template to take on any of the four roles. They would have found they don't need half the classes they have and templates would restrict forced movement powers, etc., to only those templates...does that make sense?
Feb 29, 2012 3:13 PM - Tracy: *party roles
Feb 29, 2012 3:13 PM - Tracy: That's my biggest issue with the term "part roles" anyway...everyone has a different version of a fighter...Sword and Board...2 handed...2 handed...2 weapon...No weapons (improvised)...I think each one fits into a different role with some being more defender'y' and others being more stiker'y' and others being more controll'y'. Even the Warlord is a fighter...he's just lazy and gets everyone else to do it for him.
Feb 29, 2012 3:08 PM - James L: Is non-control boring?
Feb 29, 2012 3:08 PM - James L: So what are your guys's thought on how pre-Essentials all the classes have "controller" powers. So the brawler fighter keeps the solo prone and immobilized for entire fights. The WIS Cleric can slide around and create area effects. Post-Essentials separates all of that. Only the controllers can do hard-control stun/dominate/area-control/large forced movement. Strikers do damage, Leaders heal and grant hit bonuses only. Defenders discourage moves, but not 100% lock down.
Feb 28, 2012 10:49 PM - Xerek: Thanks for bailing me out again Tracy. Enjoyed seeing how you all fared with my first creation. Learned a lot for next time.
Feb 27, 2012 6:26 PM - Xerek: Certainly, I can easily increase it to 6 anyway
Feb 27, 2012 6:19 PM - Tracy: I was just about to get back on the train when I got the email Mark, I'm going to pick mine up. I grabbed the mini's...I may be 15 - 20 late now though. Also, I have a friend from Chicago in town and if Kenny doesn't show can I bring him a character to be a 5th?
Feb 27, 2012 6:18 PM - Xerek: Looks like Tracy can bail me out, it's on. Thx tracy
Feb 27, 2012 6:15 PM - Xerek: Well, I won't cancel, I'll just stop at staples and buy some paper and pencils.... Epic fail. Just realized I won't have dice either. Sigh, I'll leave it up to you guys
Feb 27, 2012 6:12 PM - Xerek: I left my bag with map at work in jersey city. Is anyone able to bring a map? It's all I'd need, but will have to cancel otherwise.
Feb 27, 2012 10:23 AM - Xerek: and yes it's still on. You'll be missed Ross. I did tell KennyP he could make it 6, so if he still comes we'll be back at 5. I'm sure you'll still have a good chance to pull through :) mwuhahaha
Feb 27, 2012 10:12 AM - James L: Yup, 30th street and 5th Ave, get food, and head towards the back and upstairs.
Feb 27, 2012 10:11 AM - Ross H: Ack, I lost track of when this got rescheduled to. I don't think I can make it tonight, unfortunately - sorry, would love to see this through. I hope you'll be in good shape with four though!
Feb 27, 2012 10:06 AM - Matt H: Hey -- just confirming for tonight: Au Bon Gout is at 30th and 5th, yes? See you there at 7...
Feb 26, 2012 12:08 AM - Xerek: Awesome to see a full house for this. Hopefully you won't keel over so easily this time; although I won't pull the punches :)
Feb 23, 2012 12:02 AM - Tracy: That would be awesome James! I'll just stick to Defender than.
Feb 22, 2012 11:06 PM - James L: Might bring a Human Cleric of Tempus. Butcher, stands just behind the front lines of battle, instructing warriors in how to earn Tempus's favor. He paces back and forth unflinching. He is suited in chainmail covered with a white tunic emblazoned with a sword wreathed in flames.
Feb 20, 2012 12:19 PM - Tracy: That would have been too complicated to play, skald's aura, spirit companion, yikes! Please someone else sign up. lol
Feb 20, 2012 12:18 PM - Tracy: Ok! whew! I was making a half-elf knight multi class bard/shaman (to get 2 healing words per encounter) paragon Traveler's Harlequin using my half-elf diletante to pick up a Cleric grant saving throw (used at will with paragon Feat versatile master). So essentially, a leader/defender. whew!
Feb 20, 2012 12:11 PM - Brian Peters: ok.... if you schedule on a Mon next time, I'm definitely in...
Feb 20, 2012 11:41 AM - Xerek: We should prolly postpone. Let's drag some more guys in kicking and screaming to the gauntlet
Feb 20, 2012 11:24 AM - Tracy: Just checking to see if I need to make a character for this or if we are going to postpone to next monday to try and get more peeps in? We died bad last time...lol
Feb 20, 2012 12:01 AM - Xerek: Well, if you're flexible, I can leave it open and see if anyone's interested from the board game group. I'm down to run it if the 3 of you want to, but I understand your hesitancy. I can try to get back to you on here sometime tomorrow. When's the latest people would need to know if it's cancelled?
Feb 19, 2012 11:14 PM - Ross H: So Mark, what ya thinking? We've tried this with 3 before, it didn't work so great..
Feb 17, 2012 5:55 PM - Brian Peters: I'm free almost every Monday evening... In fact, Sunday nights and Mondays are my only free slots.
Feb 17, 2012 4:09 PM - James L: Who all is free and wt what times Monday? Also, there is a free downloadable D&D Skirmish Game, playtest here http://community.wizards.com/dnd_playtesting All you need is minis, and print out the cards and maps in the playtest
Feb 17, 2012 2:43 PM - Ross H: Also, I know there was some discussion of board game craziness, but were any decisions made about what/where/when/etc?
Feb 17, 2012 2:40 PM - Ross H: I'm in also!
Feb 17, 2012 1:16 PM - Tracy: I'm in!
Feb 17, 2012 1:15 PM - Xerek: I'm game for whatever, although the idea that Essentials should speed the game up is a great one in my mind: mir wurst. I'd rather not cancel this as several people have expressed interest but only one has committed. I'll run this at au bon gout after the board game craziness that is happening earlier that day. I'll be there anyway (I think the BG stuff is at au bon gout), but would like to know if i'll have enough people to run this.
Feb 17, 2012 1:07 PM - James L: I apologize profusely for the wishy-washiness. But I'm removing the Essentials-only restriction from the Campaign Games section. It's going back to the previous houserules. Also, going back to starting with "Common" items only. Feel free to switch your character if you were hating the Essentials thing, but you may only start with "Common" items and should follow all the other houserules which should feel pretty free and fair. Chris Perkins' "Circus" article convinced me of my error.
Feb 12, 2012 9:36 AM - Brian Peters: No problem, I'll just recreate a similar character in essentials... One thing I didn"t think about was that my LFR character has too much good gear and goodies to bring into this game, so good 'ol Arboren isn't eligible... Don't worry, his cousin Greenberet is here for the cause...*remakes character*
Feb 11, 2012 9:35 AM - Xerek: @brian I'm thinking of running a slightly souped up version of this at AL 12 for LFR, so u can play that one with your LFR character in addition to this one if u want although it won't be offered on a Monday :)
Feb 11, 2012 9:03 AM - Tracy: The list of characters available are under the campaign rules link above. There are still some leader and controller classes approved from non-essentials, but for the most part, you'll most likely have to re sketch your character. Glad you're interested, haven't played with you in awhile.
Feb 11, 2012 7:32 AM - Brian Peters: or, do I have to recreate an Essentials character?
Feb 11, 2012 7:32 AM - Brian Peters: I'm in!... Mondays are my best day to play!, My main character I play in LFR is just short by 1 adventure of level 11, so I will just create his "brother" at the appropriate level...
Feb 9, 2012 2:02 PM - Xerek: Didn't realize it was president's day, but i'm all for playing. Actually, I expect many people will be off, Any interest in a Presidents Day game off?
Feb 9, 2012 1:54 PM - Ross H: That's President's Day, btw. But the timing sounds good to me!
Feb 9, 2012 11:14 AM - Tracy: Hopefully we won't die this time.
Feb 8, 2012 10:27 PM - Xerek: You suddenly feel an odd tingling, the next moment you find yourself in a small empty room. Four other adventurers appear over the next few hours. During your time waiting you find several Runes arround the door. They look like Five different Elements.
Feb 8, 2012 10:27 PM - Xerek: The greedy adventurers that you are (or perhaps you just wanted to prove yourself and the new path you have found in life), the mysterious yet lucrative invitation to enter a gladiatorial bout was too much to pass up. You signed your name to the posting on the Message Board with the attached quill.
Feb 8, 2012 10:27 PM - Xerek: I'm offering my Dungeon Delve again for 5 lvl 11 PCs
