Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
Cost: $0.00
Level: 16

First Session: Thursday -- May 10th, 2012 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 6 sessions

Description:
Another conversion from Chris Perkins of the classic Frost Giants adventure.

Leagues East from the forest locale of the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, amidst the tallest mountain peaks, is the stronghold of the Frost Giant Jarl. As frost giants have been among those who have been in the reaving bands, the party is to deal with them as they did the Hill Giants: death and destruction are to be meted out to the frost giants in the same measure they gave these things to the peoples below.

Those members of the party who have participated in the raid upon the Steading should know by now that their most important mission is to gather intelligence as to what or who is behind the unholy alliance of Giant-kin. Any such information gained is to he delivered by the fastest means to the nobles sponsoring the expedition, while the party is to follow up clues in order to prosecute offenders. Any treasure taken is to be kept by the party; this is their reward for the perils they must face-and they are bound to face many in the weird ice caves and rocky caverns of the Jarl. The evil root is deeply grown here, far worse than among the Hill Giants.

Jun 1, 2012 11:44 AM - Tommy T: That really was just an absolutely fun session. I couldn't resist opening the chest at the end. It's exactly what a Kobold thief would do and I was damn happy to risk being entombed in ice!
Jun 1, 2012 9:14 AM - Vlad: I enjoyed the last fight. Finally got to put the Illusory Wall to a good use! The dragons got past that thing far too quickly in the last big fight
May 31, 2012 11:43 PM - Tracy: Seriously though, I had one of my favorite DnD sessions tonight. A lot of great role playing and some epic combats. Bulettes can kiss my ass!
May 31, 2012 11:41 PM - Tracy: I say you have warranted 3 less capital letters in pizZOWNED. I rolled a saving throw to decide if Vaald would honor his deal with you or not. :p
May 31, 2012 11:06 PM - Kenny P: We didn't just own it, we PIZZOWNED it! :P
May 31, 2012 10:07 PM - Xerek: I'm really sad I wasn't able to make it, especially after Tracy said it was the last time. Hope you owned that Ice Fort. Till next time.
May 30, 2012 10:07 PM - Tracy: Yes. since this is our last session, bring em. :)
May 30, 2012 10:03 PM - Kenny P: Tracy, do you want us to bring our leveled up characters?
May 30, 2012 8:36 PM - Tracy: +1 better late than never
May 30, 2012 8:31 PM - Kenny P: Better late than never.
May 30, 2012 5:57 PM - Xerek: I'm not sure if i'll be late tomorrow or if I won't be able to make it, depends on what I can shift in my schedule. you want me to come late or not at all?
May 23, 2012 1:14 PM - Tracy: Alright, looks like a bust for this weekend. I was really trying to squeeze it in for Johns sake as he's going out of town soon and I wanted to try to finish without him...

Who knows? :)
May 23, 2012 12:35 PM - Xerek: I'm fine whenever, but it's looking like we need to just cancel for this week instead of rescheduling and pick it up again the week after, perhaps throw in a weekend game at the end or and extra one somewhere else.
May 23, 2012 12:16 PM - Tommy T: saturday really isnt looking good for me
May 22, 2012 1:53 PM - John McCullough: Sorry to throw a wrench in the works, but I've had a family commitment come up for this weekend. If everyone else can play, go ahead and play. Otherwise I'll just see you all next Thursday.
May 22, 2012 11:06 AM - Kenny P: 1 or 2 for me as well.
May 22, 2012 10:31 AM - Tracy: I'm inclined to go with 1 unless I hear otherwise.
May 21, 2012 7:00 PM - John McCullough: 1 or 2 are good for me.
May 21, 2012 2:59 PM - Tracy: So Vote:

1 - Saturday 11 AM - 4 PM
2 - Saturday 2 PM - 7 PM
3 - Saturday 4 PM - 9 PM

4 - Sunday 11 AM - 4 PM
5 - Sunday 2 PM - 7 PM
6 - Sunday 4 PM - 9 PM
May 20, 2012 6:31 PM - John McCullough: I vote for Saturday afternoon.
May 19, 2012 9:07 PM - Tommy T: My poor, poor kobold. That was good times though. Saturday isnt the best for me.
May 18, 2012 12:41 PM - Kenny P: That was an amazing (and brutal) session. We've been cutting a swathe through the Frost Giants so far in this adventure. :P

As for pushing the next session to a different day, I'm fine with any except Sunday. But I can do Sunday if that's the only option.
May 18, 2012 10:46 AM - Tracy: Thanks guys that was awesome last night! I know that wasn't easy...but come on - storming the front door of the Frost Giant's Fortress shouldn't be. It was a bit unfortunate that the twins showed up, but nice job with the Return of the Jedi move on the lieutenant. Well played.
May 18, 2012 12:37 AM - Xerek: All those options are fine with my right now.
May 17, 2012 11:18 AM - Tracy: Can anyone play if I move this to Friday May 24th, Saturday May 25th, or Sunday May 26th? I have to change that Thursday May 24th session as I just found out I need to be in D.C. to launch my catering program next week and I don't think my train will get me back on Thursday until after 8 o'clock.
May 11, 2012 1:16 PM - Tracy: Voting is up! :D Great game last night guys. 3 Encounters and 2 maps down. Based on what you do, we very well could finish this in 4. :D Great spot to leave off as your about to enter the lair of the Remorhaz.
May 10, 2012 2:44 AM - Kenny P: I'm pretty sure Tracy meant to bring a list of items your character would like to find during the course of the adventure. Your character would still start out with common items as per Campaign Rules.
May 9, 2012 9:19 PM - Xerek: So by a wish list, we should have common items on our wish list or ucommon/rare items? we should come with o items? What about weapons/armor...you've totally confused me Tracy :(
May 9, 2012 3:48 PM - Tracy: Also for sake of time bring a wish list for your character based off of normal rules. In the character builder select the items you want but do not equip them. Make sure you indicate the item level and hand me the sheets at the table. Some encounters I will be randomly rolling for treasure and some I will include random items from your wish lists treasure parcels.
May 9, 2012 3:43 PM - Tracy: I say we stick to Cafe Au Bon Gout tomorrow as we'll need to move tables around for the size of the maps and at Citi Center they string you up and light your pubes on fire for moving the furniture.
May 9, 2012 3:40 PM - Tracy: I've been accused of being a little too soft in my Dm skills in the past so I'm making it a personal point to pound you all into pulp...fi fi fo fum. Also, I'm putting a lot into this so for those of you that wanted to but couldn't commit to this game, I will be running a second Frost Giants before the Fire Giants to accommodate.
May 6, 2012 8:22 PM - Tommy T: Rint of the Rocktooth Tribe and Rocktooth Trappers (ltd.) comes from a long line of contract dungeon builders. Rint is frequently hired to aid in expeditions into dungeons, strongholds, keeps, castles and caves. Which he then refurbishes and sells on the open market.
May 6, 2012 3:09 PM - Vlad: Thane Arnak had taken Ixil up on his offer to restore the stone giants' fortress defenses, and the construction contract went to Ixil's House. Ixil received both status among his kinsmen and profit, but he had to stay behind to oversee the restoration personally. One of the daughters of the Matron of his house had decided to continue participating in the campaign against the giants, hoping to further the influence and glory of House of Arken'Mtor
May 6, 2012 12:14 AM - Kenny P: Even though Anodyne's broken body fell from the gorgon's horns, her prodigious mind continued to exist in the astral plane. Eventually, she found a suitable host in the body of a person laying comatose in a hospice not too far from the stone giants' territory. Her death changed her far more than she realized; a hunger that no food or drink can satiate.
May 4, 2012 9:59 PM - Xerek: Stelian is proud to join the quest against the giants, protecting his comrades from harm - and failing that reviving them to protect them some more. Proudly keeping pinatas still for 30 years.
May 3, 2012 2:03 PM - Capt_Dan: No Evil Alter = Ilikan storming the Stone Giants!!!!!
May 3, 2012 1:55 PM - Tracy: Based off consensus I will leave as is unless we get pressed for time and we will play it by ear...although comparing a DnD adventure to a play is hillarious. A play isn't designed to level you up from 16 - 18 and therefore filled with encounters just to ensure you hit the xp cap. No worries we'll see what happens.
May 3, 2012 1:51 PM - Xerek: If you want to delay i'd be happy to DM something. Been meaning to Dm again. I'd love to run a 4e, but don't know where to get mods. Any requests?
May 3, 2012 1:50 PM - James L: I expected absolutely nothing from that Evil Altar room in the Hill Giants adventure, what if I had edited out all passageways to it?
May 3, 2012 1:41 PM - James L: I strongly disagree with the "edit and no one will know." We aren't casual D&D players, we often read the adventures afterwards. Remember that story Jensen was talking about. How mad that author got that one theater-company was going to take out all the bad words of his play. Every single detail is there for a reason, some of which aren't readily apparent.
May 3, 2012 1:30 PM - John McCullough: My vote: Leave the mod unedited, let us pick our way through the adventure as we choose to, and give us the real-world time-limit of four sessions. We'll shorten the adventure ourselves by choosing paths that seem interesting/optimal.

Pro-tip: You could have edited and cut and rearranged the dungeon and we never would have known. We would have been happy as could be. Next time you want to edit, do it. Just keep your mouth shut. ;)
May 3, 2012 1:28 PM - Capt_Dan: Again, with the Stone Giants, I was quite concerned we'd be rushed at the end (because of me!) but I was actually quite pleased with the result. It felt like 'Our' adventure, and I would love to play it again, because I'm sure it would be very different.
May 3, 2012 1:26 PM - Capt_Dan: The aim is always fun/satisfaction - (Mimesis & Katharsis, for the over-educated!) and I would certainly trust Tracy to decide whether and how to 'Streamline' or not. Good sand-pits are essentially 'situations' like a bike chain, just going round, until the PC's get involved (like Gum in the chain) and cause a story to happen.
May 3, 2012 1:19 PM - Capt_Dan: I think part of the fun of some of these is that they are quite re-playable. my two-cents (for what it's worth - about $0.02) is that you should have everything, as far as possible or reasonable, ready to go and then see what happens. Some parties might slowly take their time, others beeline for the 'big-bad'. You'll know after 1-2 sessions how it will likely play out, and you'll be able to take a view on whether to add in extra sessions, or for the DM to 'streamline' a little bit. The aim is al
May 3, 2012 1:05 PM - Tracy: What's the consensus on this? I could delay until they return...that's like a month and change right? I will go with the flow.
May 3, 2012 12:54 PM - James L: It seems like it would take 6 sessions. What about delaying this a month or so til John and Dan are back? You or I could run something else shorter in place of it. I could extend Dark Sun 1 session also.
May 3, 2012 12:39 PM - Tracy: I would love to be able to add another session - and I'd love to be able to run every one of these encounters. In fact, I'm tempted to rename the Gelatinous Cube a Flumph and hide it in your bag of holding. If there is a day that everyone could attend it would have to be before June 5th and we all agree on it.
May 3, 2012 12:34 PM - Xerek: what about adding in extra sessions not on thursdays? (i'm not available tuesday's but other than that i'm fairly free
May 3, 2012 12:26 PM - Tracy: I'm assuming that since we want to play through the entire Giants Mod that we want to at least get to the end..by whatever means you get there. I would post more sessions but John will not be able to attend. Nothing cut will be missed and by no means am I guardrailing anything. All I 'want' to happen is to finish this mod and if I leave it as is that isn't going to happen.
May 3, 2012 12:01 PM - James L: Site based adventures don't usually "read" well. They might seem boring at first read. You might think "oh that monster seems lame" but the interaction and chance of when and how you encounter that monster is where the fun happens. Being on the run, trying to find shelter stumbling into an encounter with a Flumph and a Duckbunny can be exciting. What if as you were growing up your DM decided "Gelatinous Cubes" are just stupid and replaced them all so you never saw them?
May 3, 2012 11:47 AM - James L: There's also not supposed to be an "epic conclusion" we might be able to sneak in, find the boss the first session, and kill him. That doesn't mean the adventure ends. It's something you have to get used to as DM, so you don't try to force "what you want" to happen, over the way things play out.
May 3, 2012 11:43 AM - Vlad: I am not objected to having more than 4 sessions. I wouldn't mind having more stuff to fight :P
May 3, 2012 11:43 AM - James L: This is a "site-based" adventure, the whole point is exploring and finding things. Trying to stick to a storyline is the opposite of that.
May 3, 2012 11:40 AM - James L: Oh, wow that changes everything. I didn't know it was that long, I think more sessions are needed then, unless you want to only run 4 sessions. Any encounters we face should be because we stumbled into them, not because the DM forced us to go a certain way or edited some out.
May 3, 2012 11:40 AM - Tracy: I'm not changing anything in the adventure that pertains to the story line, its more based off of "does this have anything to do with the adventure?" If the answer is no, then there isn't a point in leaving it in if its going to sacrifice the epic conclusion.
May 3, 2012 11:36 AM - Tracy: The thing here is there are 23 encounters so there is no way to do it in 4 sessions without chopping things up a little bit. Some of these encounters are cool enough that I wouldn't want to skp them if I knew about it...like umber hulks. If I would have known I would have lobbied to fight them as I've never had an umber hulk encounter before.
May 3, 2012 11:12 AM - James L: Please don't cut stuff out or make edits. Please run it as is. Do what John did: he asked us "Do you want to fight these stupid crystal gargoyles?" and we said no. Don't be like Michael Bay changing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into Alien Ninja Turtles.
May 3, 2012 10:55 AM - James L: In "Hill Giants" there were 12 encounters, I only skipped 2 (some umber hulks, and the Fire Giant who escaped). Groups should be able to do 3 encounters per 5 hour session. You guys were "Essentials only" though, and didn't have any slow players. Plus, there were 6 of you!.
May 3, 2012 10:42 AM - Tracy: Yes indeed, we are playing at level 16...chances are you will level up to 17 before we are through, but I'm cutting out a lot of encounters that are there solely to drive xp up. If we want to get through this in 4 sessions there is no way I can leave every encounter in there.
May 2, 2012 2:36 PM - James L: Just to make sure everyone sees: this is level 16, it was changed recently.
May 2, 2012 2:23 PM - Jensen: I have to bail on this. may has become crazy for me. Good luck to all adventuring into the frost giant unknown. watchout for snowmen
May 1, 2012 1:05 PM - Ross H: I'm feeling a little overscheduled so going to drop for now - may rejoin, but for now... :/
Apr 29, 2012 1:38 PM - Jason P.: Oh, limit 5. boo.
Apr 29, 2012 1:38 PM - Jason P.: There's a great chance I'll get bumped, but I'm in the mood to heal some peeps.
Apr 11, 2012 10:33 AM - Ross H: OK, I can make this! Yay :D
Mar 19, 2012 7:38 PM - Tracy: Sure thing John! Looking forward to Fire Giants C_D! Love how this became a rotating event!
Mar 19, 2012 6:26 PM - John McCullough: Could this start a week earlier?
Mar 19, 2012 3:16 PM - Capt_Dan: Can't play this one either, BUT - I think I'll run the Hall of the Fire Giant King in late June/July!
