First Session: Thursday -- July 5th, 2012 -- 7:00 PM

Aug 1, 2012 10:39 PM - James L: I so like the wrap-ups. I feel like a king
Aug 1, 2012 1:44 AM - Kenny P: Another notch in the axe of awesomeness, Dan. Great game. See you in Arvandor!
Aug 1, 2012 12:19 AM - Matt H: Awesome adventure -- thanks for running, Dan, and for the fantastic prep-work.
Jul 31, 2012 11:43 PM - Capt_Dan: No one knew what happened to the Dragonborn. The Sorcerer slipped away overnight, leaving much of his share of the spoils behind. Many tales are still told however, of a fierce and burning sorcerer questing high in the Cairngorm hills - reputedly seeking a power greater than that of the Gods themselves...
Jul 31, 2012 11:43 PM - Capt_Dan: - Prepare to launch an assault on the Underdark.
Jul 31, 2012 11:41 PM - Capt_Dan: Alfirian - Returning to the Eladrin a hero, though not the husband of a princess, you are made a General of the Northern Army, and an honourary commander of the royal guard (much to the actual Captain of the guards chagrin). Princesses proving just beyond your reach, you find no end of handmaids and wenches enthralled by your rough charms. Eventually, it all becomes too boring, and you finally depart at the head of a company of Eladrin warriors to again lend help to Torgan and his men as they pr
Jul 31, 2012 11:38 PM - Capt_Dan: Neven - You initially remain to assist Torgan in rendering his new home habitable, but leave shortly after "The Dragon Incident". With the Death of Eclavedra, who has been behind all the giants, you have now found some measure of rest, and return to the Gestalt.
Jul 31, 2012 11:36 PM - Capt_Dan: Thengel - After retuning the Head of Snurre to the Storm giants, you are gifted your magnificent flying tower. Contemplating a life of flying and sleeping, you instead find yourself inundated with pleas for help. Unable to service them all, you instead turn to others who owe you favours, and old friends to assist. Eventually, you become known as a flying adventure Buruea, providing troubled villagers with keen adventurers across the land...
Jul 31, 2012 11:33 PM - Capt_Dan: Torgan - You claim the Fire Giants Home for yourself, and after moving in your wife, Danica, and a team of Dwarven builders, have it turned into a fine Dwarven Hold, in a short six months (no one talks about the "Dragon Incident" in the third week...) Dram becomes your trusted Lieutenant and Guard Commander.
Jul 31, 2012 11:31 PM - Capt_Dan: Congratulations! You have won "Dungeons and Dragons - Halls of the Fire Giant King"!

Press "Space" now to restart in "Oh Fuck!" mode!
Jul 31, 2012 11:28 PM - Vlad: Thanks for the game, Dan, was a blast, as usual
Jul 31, 2012 7:08 PM - T Michael: Sorry, but I am running a few minutes late.
Jul 30, 2012 11:28 AM - Matt H: Cool -- thanks. See you tomorrow.
Jul 30, 2012 11:26 AM - Capt_Dan: Not quite - we're on for Tomorrow (Tues) this week. Not set for the week after...
Jul 30, 2012 11:23 AM - Matt H: Just confirming: we're back on for Thursdays this week and next, yes? Couldn't remember how we left things...
Jul 26, 2012 6:44 PM - T Michael: With danger sense I rolled an 18 and 19 plus 9 modifier. Remember we can swotch
Jul 26, 2012 1:17 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay, no problem. We'll go for a 7:15 start then, so no one has to rush.
Jul 26, 2012 12:58 PM - James L: I might be up to an hour late, but probably 30 min.
Jul 26, 2012 12:42 PM - Kenny P: Neven rolled a 7, for a total of 16 (+9 mod)
Jul 25, 2012 11:34 PM - Matt H: Thengel rolled a 12, for a modified initiative of 25 (+13 mod).
Jul 25, 2012 8:54 AM - Capt_Dan: No problem, I'm still flexible on any of these dates.
Jul 24, 2012 8:39 PM - James L: I can't make Thursday Aug 2nd, when did that get moved?
Jul 24, 2012 11:20 AM - T Michael: Thank you to everyone for switching to Thursday. I appreciate it and look forward to seeing you.
Jul 23, 2012 11:34 AM - Capt_Dan: James, thanks for being flexible. It occurs to me, that as we immediately start with combat next time, you can all roll me a D20 now and post the result (I have you mods) so that everything is immediately ready to go!
Jul 23, 2012 9:50 AM - James L: Thursday should work, I just have to juggle some baby duties Thursday. Might be a few minutes late.
Jul 22, 2012 9:52 AM - Capt_Dan: Okay, great, thanks guys. Unless James comes back with an objection we'll go back to Thursdays.
Jul 22, 2012 3:33 AM - Kenny P: Thursday's good.
Jul 21, 2012 9:28 PM - Vlad: Thursday works for me.
Jul 21, 2012 7:20 PM - Matt H: Thursday 7/26 is fine by me. Also: I somehow thought next week's game was also Thursday 8/2; I can't make Monday 7/30.
Jul 21, 2012 7:05 PM - Capt_Dan: I can go to Thursday, does anyone else object? one objection keeps us on Mon, for fairness.
Jul 21, 2012 8:04 AM - T Michael: team, i just returned from California and found out that I have to present to a board of directors in Bermuda on Monday afternoon. No flight gets me back for our game. My apologies, but I am ok if you guys play without me (but with Alfirian as your companion so James can use him as a meat shield) or if people can switch to Thursday night.

Jul 12, 2012 4:55 PM - Capt_Dan: Finally, individual XP is 14,840 so expect to Level next time. Also remember, we start next time with Initiative, as you seem to feel highly emboldend to just storm the Prison...
Jul 12, 2012 4:53 PM - Capt_Dan: Admin: Torgan - 124hp/4 surges, Thengal - 132hp/2 surges, Alfiran - 123hp/2 surges, Neven - 95hp/5 surges, Virgil - 58hp/1 surge. You lunatic. One more encounter is a fair assessment of your current situation. That leaves the question of how long you really have before Snurre's death is discovered... and what happens then...
Jul 12, 2012 4:50 PM - Capt_Dan: Having now found the Elven Princess, Moonshadow, you have set off to the Prisons to rescue the remnents of her company so that she can be eascorted home...
Jul 12, 2012 4:49 PM - Capt_Dan: Quick updates: You've now been in the Fire Giants halls for a few hours. You've knocked off the King and Queen, and raided the treasure room. You've also run into several other Giant allies of (the late) Snurre.
Jul 11, 2012 4:41 PM - James L: oops, i thought you were asking difference between places, but you were asking difference between knight and weaponmaster.
Jul 11, 2012 4:40 PM - James L: Citicenter has better Air Conditioning, but Au Bon Gout sells beer and food. Citicenter has bums, but Au Bon Gout has burnt smells. Citicenter has many choices to eat nearby: Chipotle, Potbelly, Dunkin Donuts, Goodburger, Toasties, Starbucks. Au Bon Gout has expensive food, but rockin radio.
Jul 11, 2012 3:03 PM - James L: Nevermind, I'm sticking with Weaponmaster. I was thinking of trading in my Dailies and Encounter powers for the good ole reliable knight mechanic, but it's more fun to jockey for position, it's fun to try my hardest to flank to get the best advantage for my encounter powers. It's more exciting to know I could miss with every single power if things go poorly.
Jul 11, 2012 2:32 PM - Capt_Dan: I might object... and yes, Au bon Gout. What's the difference between them?
Jul 11, 2012 1:03 PM - Matt H: I just imagined him emerging from the Iron Golem thing's cloud of poison and discovering that he's forgotten how to mark enemies, but has a generally dangerous aura.

Also: we're back at Au Bon Gout tonight, yes?
Jul 11, 2012 1:00 PM - James L: Would anyone be upset if I made Torgan a Knight instead of the (Weaponmaster)Fighter he is now?
Jul 10, 2012 9:08 PM - Capt_Dan: Reminder - we play TOMORROW (Weds). After ~20mins in the Fire Giant Halls, you've killed the King, nicked his stuff, and now stand in his Treasury, pondering your next move...
Jul 10, 2012 9:03 PM - Capt_Dan: Friday was just a thought. I'll go with Weds again, I think.
Jul 7, 2012 5:57 PM - Capt_Dan: I'll need to see it break a couple of skulls first, but otherwise, okay.
Jul 7, 2012 5:13 PM - Matt H: In that case, Thengel tests the weight of the hammer in his wrinkled hand. "You'll do nicely. I'll name you Skullbreaker."

Anyone interested in disenchanting a Throwing Hammer of Long Range +4 (Level 17 common, 65,000 gp) is welcome to it.

He offers
Jul 7, 2012 10:14 AM - Capt_Dan: Matt, I have no problem with the Hammer being that, if no one else has an interest in it... The wand is getting magically dismantled - anyone want the Armour? You could 'probably' leave all this stuff here, for now... after all, it is a 'secret' room...
Jul 7, 2012 9:47 AM - Matt H: The only specific thing that Thengel is looking for would be a Dwarven Thrower Craghammer +5 (Level 22 Uncommon). And giant heads, of course. (I checked the carrying rules, and it seems like I'll have to leave Iron Snurre behind...for now. I still think that could be turned into a totally badass helmet.)
Jul 6, 2012 7:48 PM - Kenny P: I did some calculating. The gold coins weigh a total of 780 lbs. I think it best if we take only what we can carry w/o penalties to our carrying capacity, ie convertible currency in the form of gems, jewelry, and such.
Jul 6, 2012 7:42 PM - Kenny P: Yep. Passwall was used with my 1 costless exploration ritual via the Exploration Mastery feat.

I have 60 gp worth of residuum for ritual use, and Disenchant Magic Item costs only 25 to cast. It's the time I'm concerned about. It takes an hour to disenchant; same with enchanting. I think that if we find time for an extended rest, we use it for ritual use, one of which will wipe away our fatigue.
Jul 6, 2012 7:01 PM - Capt_Dan: remember, you've already used your free ritual...
Jul 6, 2012 7:01 PM - Capt_Dan: Wand - Basic Magic. If none of these items are any use, I'm prepared to consider alternatives of equal stature. If you are about to perfom an y rituals to any items, let me know what/how long and the result, please.
Jul 6, 2012 6:56 PM - Matt H: Can you actually make Uncommon items? I had always thought that you could upgrade existing Uncommons, but could only actually make Common ones...in any case, I'm happy to waive my share of any of this that would be useful to somebody else. But I'm keeping my head(s).
Jul 6, 2012 5:35 PM - Kenny P: Sorcerers aren't proficient in wands?! What is air!
Jul 6, 2012 5:29 PM - Vlad: Wands aren't really up the sorcerer's alley. I prefer daggers, worst case staves.
Jul 6, 2012 5:28 PM - Kenny P: Waitaminute. I forgot about the sorcerer. I can disenchant something else instead if Virgil takes the wand.
Jul 6, 2012 5:25 PM - Kenny P: That +5 wand alone makes me a happy ritualist. Is it the basic magic variety (225,000 gp) or uncommon (425,000 gp)? Disenchanting the former would net me 45,000 gp worth of residuum (20% of market price), with which I can enchant backpacks into haversacks and sacks into bag of holdings. Extended rest is now a thing of the past! This season is all about the Fantastic Recuperation. :P
Jul 6, 2012 3:45 PM - James L: just kidding
Jul 6, 2012 3:45 PM - James L: Sorry bro, I used all your Dailies, but it was awesome! I kept forgetting all the swapping and re-rolling we could all do every time we roll Initiative.
Jul 6, 2012 3:43 PM - T Michael: You guys sound like you rocked it. How did James do with doling out the healing after I left?
Jul 6, 2012 2:37 PM - Capt_Dan: Finally, 46,400 XP - 9,280xp each.
Jul 6, 2012 2:32 PM - Capt_Dan: Treasure - 320pp, 39,000gp, Golden Crown (15,000gp), Crystal Gong (7,500gp), Mithril Tiara Set (15,000gp), Statue of Correlon embracing Lolth (7,500gp) 30 Gems (30,000gp), black Iron Crown, and two Snurre heads (actual & Golem).
Jul 6, 2012 2:28 PM - Capt_Dan: A Quick and nasty fight with Golem-Snurre later and you find yourself in possession of: +5 Resounding Warhammer, +5 Wand, +4 Deathcut Armor (any type)- Please divide these as appropriate.
Jul 6, 2012 2:24 PM - Capt_Dan: Recap: After easily breaching the Great door to the Fire Giants Hall, you find yourself almost immediately face-to-face with King Snurre. A hard fight later, and the King is no more, but the sinister Drow assassin, the hunt for the Treator Obmi, and the need to rescue Princess Moonshadow may yet drive you further in to the mountain...
Jul 6, 2012 2:22 PM - Capt_Dan: I've changed next week for Wednesday. The week after (currently 7/18) I could do on the Friday, at mine? Otherwise I'll have to go for Tuesday. Let me know.
Jul 6, 2012 1:24 AM - Kenny P: Always a pleasure playing in one of your games, Dan. Can't wait for more!

Monday or Wednesday work for me.
Jul 6, 2012 12:05 AM - Matt H: Great game! Thanks for running Dan. Any idea when the next game will be? The only days I could do next week are Monday or Wednesday (I'm running an intro game on Tuesday, then off to Comic Con). If there's something that works for everybody else, I can catch up next time...
Jul 5, 2012 5:34 PM - T Michael: Alfirian is trained in arcana (22), athletics (21), diplomacy (19), endurance (11), history (22), and religion (20).
Jul 5, 2012 3:10 PM - Matt H: Armed with his trusty hammer Herugrim, Thengel has always been a "Hit it til it's dead, then once more for good measure." kind of guy. He's getting up there in age, but is still fit (Athletics 19), sturdy (Endurance 14), healthy (Heal 15), worldly (Nature 15) and he's been around the block (History 14).
Jul 5, 2012 3:00 PM - Kenny P: Hey guys, what skills are your characters trained in?
Jul 5, 2012 2:58 PM - Kenny P: Neven is part of a gestalt super-mind that included Anodyne before her untimely death. Neven's hunt for an elusive prey has led her to the obsidian halls of the fire giants. It is providence that the trail led her to those who were responsible for her sister's death.

[My psion is an infiltration specialist, of both physical and mental. I have Perception +21 and Dungeoneering +19/+22, the latter being used instead of Thievery via a feat. Also have rituals galore incl Passwall]
Jul 5, 2012 1:19 PM - Capt_Dan: Ooh! Sorry, sorry - yes, definitely Au Bon gout! If it's REALLY unbearable, I may adjourn us to citi in future...
Jul 5, 2012 12:10 PM - Matt H: Hmm...I had assumed CitiCenter for that very reason...should we split the party?
Jul 5, 2012 12:01 PM - Vlad: Meeting at Au Bon, right? Should be close enough to a furnace this time of the year
Jul 4, 2012 10:41 PM - Capt_Dan: You are welcome to consider an approach; if it helps, you are in the centre of a Lava field, two days from 'civilisation' facing a large Black basalt hill, and two enormous Black Obsidian doors. They look sturdy.
Jul 4, 2012 10:39 PM - Capt_Dan: Tuesdays look good.
Jul 4, 2012 8:57 PM - James L: Changing the future ones to Tuesday seems to solve a few people's scheduling issues.
Jul 4, 2012 8:28 PM - James L: Torgan would need constant reminding as he is not so good at sticking to the plan.
Jul 4, 2012 8:27 PM - James L: In previous old-school location based adventures it paid to have some sort of strategy going in, such as The stealthy approach, or the disguise approach, or the diplomacy, or info gathering. Should us players discuss beforehand?
Jul 4, 2012 7:50 PM - Capt_Dan: As we begin, you now approach a basalt hill, within a treacherous Lava field, deep within the Crystalmist mountains - two days from the last friendly face. At the base of this hill stands enormous black Obsidian doors...
Jul 4, 2012 7:47 PM - Capt_Dan: Who knows what may motivate a Sorcerer? All the dwarves know is "Fight Fire with Fire"...
Jul 4, 2012 7:47 PM - Capt_Dan: (Kenny P Telepath): You seek a dark prey, and you believe it to be holed up with the fire Giants. You have joined up to further your own investigation.
Jul 4, 2012 7:45 PM - Capt_Dan: (T Michael's Eladrin): You were sent by an Eladrin Council to conduct negotiations to recover an Elf Princess - Moonshadow - whom Snurre has captured, and demanded ransom for. The Dwarves have willingly provided support in exchange for an assist in their own endeavour. Negotations are expected to be short, and favourable.
Jul 4, 2012 7:40 PM - Capt_Dan: Thengel: You have recsieved word from an old Friend and Ally, Krombaalt, a Storm Giant Lord. He demands the head of "that cur, King Snurre Ironbelly" and has sent you to the dwarves to fulfil this mission.
Jul 4, 2012 7:39 PM - Capt_Dan: Torgan: For your service, and expertise, against the Giants so far, you have been tasked by the Dwarven Lords to bring a treacherous exile to justice; Obmi Ironwhisper who now serves the Fire Giant King Snurre.
Jul 4, 2012 6:41 PM - Matt H: Thengel Steelsheen is an elderly (but still imposing) human warrior. The last surviving member of the once-great adventuring company, The Fellowship of the Unbroken Circle, he seeks one final ride to glory before he joins his lost companions at the feast of ancestors in the night kingdom.
Jul 4, 2012 12:00 AM - James L: Now the true threat has been discovered he is ready to lay low the Fire Giants with his ever-sharp axe. Sorry be the giant who tries to push Torgan around or knock him down.
Jul 3, 2012 11:59 PM - James L: Alas, he was waylaid by Hill Giants long ago and taken as a slave. Freed by virtuous adventurers he led an expedition against the Stone Giants and rescued his new wife Danica and forged an alliance with ensorcelled Stone Giant King.
Jul 3, 2012 11:59 PM - James L: Torgan, was a dwarven soldier, in countless wars against orcs, drow, troglodytes, snirfneblin and the other underdark denizens who were after his clans dwarven riches.
Jul 3, 2012 11:57 PM - Matt H: Great! It's just those days...heading to ComicCon, and then my mother in law in in town (and for some reason expects me to have dinner with her, rather than kill giants...)
Jul 3, 2012 11:35 AM - Capt_Dan: Matt, is that those days secific, or the whole week? If it's just the days, get back in! We'll work it out. As long as we can manage it without a gap longer than 14 days, I think it'll be fine.
Jul 3, 2012 11:33 AM - Matt H: If there's flexibility in the schedule, I'd love to try to do this -- it's the 2nd and 3rd dates I couldn't make.
Jul 3, 2012 11:24 AM - Capt_Dan: If people have specific days they can't make, please put them up. If it's whole weeks, note those as well, I'll try and see where we get to.
Jul 3, 2012 11:23 AM - Capt_Dan: Absolutely, I'm not tied to any particular days/nights - if we can all make a session each week? I'm happy even to work the pace as well, so if we have to miss a week here or there, it should be fine.
Jul 3, 2012 11:23 AM - Capt_Dan: Absolutely, I'm not tied to any particular days/nights - if we can all make a session each week? I'm happy even to work the pace as well, so if we have to miss a week here or there, it should be fine.
Jul 3, 2012 11:11 AM - James L: Can we all try to be flexible to try to include everyone? I can usually be interchangeable between Monday thru Thursdays
Jul 3, 2012 11:08 AM - T Michael: Captain Dan, I may have go the way of Matt with business trips hitting me hard on the 12th and 19th. Dropping out would hurt so bad.
Jul 2, 2012 3:09 PM - Capt_Dan: Sorry all - anyone wanting in, I have extended the dates for committing. If you can make, it I strongly reccomend you do so! I hav a small horde of Angry, angry Fire Giants in front of me even as I type...
Jun 25, 2012 8:19 PM - Matt H: Just found out that a business trip and a mother-in-law visit are conspiring to make me miss two of the games...will have to sit this one out. :-( Happy giantslaying!
Jun 14, 2012 10:33 PM - Tracy: Frost Giants went surprisingly quick and the players managed it in only 3 sessions. It was crazy as it easily could have been 6 if things went any other way then it did. Totally hard to judge these things so better to err on the side of over prepared. Damn, wish I could play the conclusion. :(
May 18, 2012 5:10 PM - T Michael: I can move back a week and go into August.
May 18, 2012 4:43 PM - James L: I have no problem with going into August!
May 18, 2012 4:35 PM - Capt_Dan: Looking at this again, I would love to get James in - does it work if I move the first session up one week to start in July? Alternately, does it work if I run two sessions that first week - one on Monday 2nd July and then as normal (so next one on Thu that week?) Also, thoughts as to length would be appreciated - is it a problem if we run into Aug?
May 3, 2012 1:22 PM - Capt_Dan: After the Stone giants, and the conversation on the Frost Giants post, and some consideration of this mod, I doubt it will easily go into 4 sessions. I offer two possiblities; we can just add on 2-4 more sessions, or I can host a 'big-finish' session at my place on the weekend 20-22 July. I offer the choice, because I realise an afternoon/evening (8 hrs or so) might be beyond the goodwill of some people's families. Let me know.
Apr 20, 2012 9:26 PM - T Michael:
Apr 19, 2012 10:34 AM - T Michael: Thank you!
Apr 19, 2012 10:25 AM - T Michael: Dan, if you are flexible and could move the start date back to June 28th when my kids are away at camp, I could play and I would love to have you as DM again.
Apr 3, 2012 8:49 PM - Capt_Dan: This is a PLACEHOLDER. I have put it up for the interested to express interest. I no dates are certain, yet - but it will not be until at least mid-June (I am in the UK until then) this will definitely happen though!
