Red Hand of Doom - Part 1
Cost: $0.00
Level: 6

First Session: Saturday -- August 4th, 2012 -- 11:30 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 4-5 sessions

One of the best adventures, ever told. See why 4th edition is set in the Nentir Vale.

Who Can Stand Against the Son of the Dragon?

The Wyrmsmoke Mountains shook with the thunder of ten thousand screaming hobgoblin soldiers. From the phalanx emerged a single champion. One by one the tribes fell silent as the warlord rose up, red scales gleaming along his shoulders, horns swept back from his head. A hundred bright yellow banners stood beneath him, each marked with a great red hand. He stood upon a precipice and raised his arms. “I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Dragon!” the warlord bellowed. “Hear me! Tomorrow we march to war!”

Confronted with the relentless advance of Azurr Kul’s horde, the characters must undertake vital missions to influence the outcome of the war. Can they shatter the armies of the enemy, or will Azarr Kul’s dreams rain destruction upon the human lands?

Aug 17, 2012 5:48 PM - Paul: Sounds good to me. See you all tomorrow at 2pm at Au Bon Gout.
Aug 17, 2012 5:46 PM - Tracy: No worries guys, lets discuss tomorrow at Au Bon Gout. I'm doing my planning for tomorrow and I'm confident we can finish this in 6 hours. Let's meet at 2 again as that worked out nice and gives us time to sleep in and run some errands as well as enjoy the night.
Aug 16, 2012 9:06 AM - Xerek: I'm find moving that weekend around, perhaps playing on monday instead, but I would still need to move around the next weekend.
Aug 15, 2012 5:24 PM - Paul: Let me know what you all think about the idea of taking a weekend off on the Labor Day weekend. I will leave it ultimately up to Tracy and the group. See you all this Saturday.
Aug 15, 2012 5:19 PM - Paul: I will be out of town for the Labor Day weekend on Sept 1 and 2. So it would be great if we could have that weekend off. September 8th works better for me than September 9th.
Aug 15, 2012 3:15 PM - Xerek: Or, If we could do an early single session on the 8th, that would also be a great option for me.
Aug 15, 2012 3:08 PM - Xerek: Yes, my preferred move would be the one on the 8th, to the 9th (and ideally a late single session on the 9th)
Aug 15, 2012 2:42 PM - Kenny P: I'm okay with moving the sessions around in September. That's what you meant right?
Aug 15, 2012 1:11 PM - Xerek: As a heads up, can we move or alter the meet for a weekend in September? somewhere between the 8-22. My preferred option would be to move to sunday and do a single instead of double session. I can be flexible, but I have family in the area during that time and would like to catch up with them for at a day or so on a weekend.
Aug 11, 2012 10:43 PM - Kenny P: Oh then it would've been on like donkey kong! I was holding back, y'see. 0:) haha
Aug 11, 2012 9:52 PM - Tracy: Also, great job Paul on spending your action point to collapse that bridge. Can you imagine how the next round would have gone with 2 more Hell Hounds, the Minotaur, AND the dragon?
Aug 11, 2012 9:44 PM - Tracy: Remember to bring level 7 characters next time. You earned them. :)
Aug 11, 2012 9:43 PM - Tracy: Wow guys...you almost all died! That was supposed to be a tough encounter, but I didn't think it would be that bad! Great job on that last minute crit...now what happened to Ozyrandion's head? Dun Dun Dun...(cue ominous music)
Aug 10, 2012 4:06 PM - Tracy: You can bring a level 7 character in case we make it, but I doubt you'll use them until the next session.
Aug 9, 2012 9:17 PM - Kenny P: I doubt it. This entire campaign is supposed to take use to 10th level, I believe.
Aug 9, 2012 7:27 PM - SofaKing: hey are we supposed to advance to lvl 7 for next session?
Aug 7, 2012 10:43 PM - Tracy: Also, please remember to sign up for the other sessions. I'll lock them once they are full. :)
Aug 6, 2012 9:52 AM - Tracy: Thanks guys, this was a super fun start to this campaign. Can't wait to see where you guys take it. Again, I'll work on throwing this up onto obsidian portal and get you invited so we can track sessions there. Please email me: tjgingell@gmail.com so I have your email addresses. Cheers!
Aug 5, 2012 2:04 PM - Kenny P: Honey badger had a delicious feast of gamery that excited his palate to no end. This gluttonous f*ck looks forward to sampling from next week's menu!
Aug 5, 2012 1:22 PM - Rob P: had a blast and looking forward to next session!
Aug 4, 2012 11:26 AM - Tracy: No worries. See you all soon!
Aug 4, 2012 11:09 AM - SofaKing: I am also going to be about 30 minutes late, I apologize.
Aug 4, 2012 11:04 AM - Kenny P: Hey guys. I missed my bus so I'm going to be about 15-20 min late.
Aug 4, 2012 1:14 AM - Paul: As you may be able to tell, I am looking forward to this!
Aug 4, 2012 1:12 AM - Paul: Abraxus, the most noble, self-sacrificing, and lawfully good Dragonborn paladin ever-known, also indicates that he respectfully and intentionally wishes to dispense of submitting a wishlist as is requested by the honorable DM. Abraxus prefers to take magic items and treasures as the gods may ordain, and to dispense of said magic items and treasures by giving them to the poor if they seem to grand for his own needs.
Aug 4, 2012 1:06 AM - Paul: Abraxus, whose family hails from the most lawfully good, noble, and sacrificial dragonborn paladins ever known in the history of Arkhosia, wishes, in his extreme humility, to use a comparable camel as his mount, in lieu of a horse. If the DM would permit this, Abraxus would be most grateful.
Aug 3, 2012 11:14 PM - Rob P: sorry catching up. so i start with 3 common items. i bring with me a wish list of OTHER items i would like to see at some point and may acquire? its fine, just making sure i got things. i had a long day lol
Aug 3, 2012 9:50 PM - Tracy: Please add 1 horse to your character and bring it along. It has been a long journey since you found the map pointing you towards the Vault of Vraath Keep. You have been in the Elsir Vale for over a week now following the crude landmarks laid out for you.
Aug 3, 2012 8:59 PM - Tracy: OMG I'm so excited for this! I've been waiting 5 years to run it again! Just dusted off my old map and gathered my red hand minis...

When I ran this when it first came out I actually constructed a 'to scale' pyramid for one of the adventure paths...wonder if I can do it again...
Aug 3, 2012 1:36 PM - Kenny P: However, the incoming tide of goblins were too much and either consumed or drove away all his yummy prey, especially the honey wasps. Abernathy was so mad that he plagued the goblins with traps and other devilry, but the goblins' numbers were too great. They eventually drove him out of his home. :(
Aug 3, 2012 1:30 PM - Kenny P: One beautiful afternoon in the Wyrmsmoke badlands, Abernathy (the ever-lovable honey badger) was happily munching on some snake when a horde of goblins trampled into his territory and set up shop. Abernathy didn't care, he didn't give a shit. As long as they left him alone, he tolerated their presence. His neighbors and peers came to Abernathy seeking help, but he turned them away. They did call him "nasty ass" after all.
Aug 3, 2012 10:40 AM - Xerek: okay, i switched to hengeyokai, although i only just realized the pun in my name...ugh
Aug 3, 2012 10:32 AM - Tracy: Correct, take the 6 or E train to 53rd street. The Citi Center entrance is by the Dunkin Donuts as you exit the station. It's a big public atrium. You can call me if you get lost 917-655-6297. The aps I use are: i4e and the compendium.
Aug 3, 2012 10:26 AM - SofaKing: So the location is confirmed? 54th and lex? Tracy can you email contact info in case I get lost?
Also can any1 recomend some android tablet apps?
Aug 2, 2012 5:11 PM - Paul: Now we're getting serious here!!!
Aug 2, 2012 5:08 PM - Tracy: Yeah you can include rare but chances are this adventure has its own rare items that will trump your requests. Wink wink
Aug 2, 2012 5:06 PM - Tracy: I didn't notice that change Mark, good catch.
Aug 2, 2012 5:06 PM - Xerek: The wish list are extra items you would appreciate finding during the adventure. I would ask if these can be rares?
Aug 2, 2012 5:05 PM - Tracy: You "may" acquire them. There are treasure parcels that these items will randomly be added to. Each person can expect at least 1 item from your list, but only 1 level 10 and 9 item will be given from all of you lists. At level 7 you will all give me another list but with a level 11, 10, 9, and 8 item...etc.
Aug 2, 2012 5:04 PM - Xerek: I was going to say you get 3 common items your lvl or lower and 1 common at your lvl and lower, but saw that James changed the rules again and you get 3 common at lvl or lower and 1 uncommon at lvl +1 or lower
Aug 2, 2012 4:56 PM - Rob P: So we dont start with the items? We "acquire" them as we go along?
Aug 2, 2012 4:33 PM - Tracy: If you're foggy on this...your wish list is 4 items. For this level: 1 level 7 item, 1 level 8 item, 1 level 9 item, 1 level 10 item. Follow the character creation rules otherwise. Remember though to add these items in you're inventory and give me the sheet to speed things up during play.
Aug 2, 2012 4:30 PM - Tracy: Plan on 8 hours and we'll take a break in the middle of it to stretch and eat. Dragonborn is animal enough for the circus theme. Everyone please bring a wish list as well. Since this is going to take you into level 10 you'll be seeing some of the stuff you want. Best way to do this is to add the items to your characters inventory but don't equip them. At the session you can hand them to me and I'll give you the card in treasure bundles. Sofaking...race and class? :O)
Aug 2, 2012 4:07 PM - Paul: Thanks Tracy. How many hours are we looking at for this first session? In terms of the circus theme, I think I'll be fine sticking with my draconic features! See y'all on Saturday.
Aug 2, 2012 4:01 PM - Tracy: Woo-hoo! For this first part I believe we are all the posted dates will remain the same. I'll be at the Citi Center on 54th & Lex on Saturday at 11:30. Are you all doing the circus theme? Can't wait to begin this epic epicness!
Aug 2, 2012 3:30 PM - Paul: Looking forward to the beginning of the campaign on Saturday. Do we have an exact time and place yet? Thanks.
Jul 31, 2012 1:37 PM - Rob P: To confirm, we are gaming at ur place tracy? If so whats ur address? U could email me it if u dont wanna post it here.
Jul 24, 2012 7:09 PM - Kenny P: Honey badger don't care. Honey badger don't give a shit. [but he secretly does ;)]
Jul 24, 2012 7:04 PM - Tracy: Howdy, that would actually be a lot of fun. When this adventure was written, Hengeyokai didn't exist. If everyone stuck with a race like that I could write it into the adventure.
Jul 24, 2012 6:40 PM - Rob P: Power of a monkey!
Jul 24, 2012 6:40 PM - Rob P: If everyone is cool with it and the dm approves, im totally in on a party wide hengeyokai theme!
Jul 24, 2012 4:32 PM - Kenny P: Da da da da da da da da circus
Da da da da da da da da afro
Circus afro, circus afro,
Polka dot polka dot polka dot afro!
Jul 24, 2012 1:55 PM - Xerek: I could switch to Hengeyokai too, fits nicely with a monk. It could be a party of aminals!
Jul 24, 2012 1:48 PM - Rob P: Lol no worries. Ill still play a half orc.
Jul 24, 2012 11:29 AM - Tracy: I think Kenny had a hengeyokai Honey Badger he was going to bring at one point...
Jul 20, 2012 10:55 PM - Rob P: lol im playing final fantasy 9, and now im tempted for my brutal scoundrel to be a monkey hengeyokai instead of a half orc to make a dnd zidane lol
Jul 13, 2012 1:14 PM - Paul: On my calendar!
Jul 12, 2012 11:23 AM - Rob P: That works perfect for me :)
Jul 12, 2012 10:51 AM - Tracy: We can do a single session on the 11th from 2 - 6ish and still stay on track if that works with your doctor appointment. I try to err on the side of 1 too many sessions booked just to ensure completion.
Jul 11, 2012 1:08 PM - Rob P: What would u say would be a possible expected play time for the mod on the 11th Tracy? I reviewed my calendar and i have a doc appointment that day that i could try and push to later or earlier in the day.
Jul 10, 2012 12:40 PM - Tracy: There is a link above titled Campaign Rules. Use the 4.0 character creation rules as stated there and you'll be good. I think everyone here was on point with their responses.
Jul 10, 2012 8:58 AM - Rob P: I picked all my items, they are all base magic, except one. If i recall correctly there is a list of common items, where is the list so i can check about that item?
Jul 9, 2012 10:12 PM - Paul: I have always found that the standard array method works perfectly fine for me in 4e; especially since the 4e mechanic contemplates that after you have advanced a few levels, you will have had the opportunity to choose which ability scores to raise as a result of leveling up.
Jul 9, 2012 10:09 PM - Paul: @Xerek: absolutely!
Jul 9, 2012 10:08 PM - Xerek: oh, that and only 4 common items.
Jul 9, 2012 10:07 PM - Xerek: "to use "common sense" and to avoid "cheesy exploitation" of the rules" ... I would say you hit the nail on the head right there. The whole point of the rules is to make the game run smoothly and be enjoyable for all parties, DM included. They're primarily pointed at stopping Frostcheese etc from the optimization boards. Make a cool character that's not overly cheezed up and you should be fine.
Jul 9, 2012 10:04 PM - Paul: A lot of these questions are toss-ups that require a common-sense approach, it seems to me.
Jul 9, 2012 10:02 PM - Paul: ...the theory is that either method of ability scores for character creation should, more or less, produce comparable results.
Jul 9, 2012 10:01 PM - Paul: Good question. The house rules regarding 4e character creation say to use "common sense" and to avoid "cheesy exploitation" of the rules. I would venture to say that either Method 1 (Standard Array) or Method 2 (Customizing Scores, or "Point-Buy") as defined on pages 77-78 of the Rules Compendium Essentials rulebook are perfectly fine to use, so long as the character that is created is not obscenely imbalanced and so long as the rules for point-buying are not exploited...
Jul 9, 2012 9:49 PM - SofaKing: Hmmm, ok so what is the point buy? And are there any source limitations or house rules not mentioned in the link?
Jul 9, 2012 9:32 PM - Paul: @sofaking: I myself was under the impression that since the game is being run as a 4th edition conversion from Pathfinder, that the Pathfinder house rules regarding character creation would not be applicable. If it were a Pathfinder campaign, then that would be a different matter, in my view at least.
Jul 9, 2012 9:27 PM - Paul: ...and in this regard, the power may very well be disallowed. It's a toss up. I would venture to say that the power may not be allowed since it ends up slowing down play. Just my thoughts.
Jul 9, 2012 9:25 PM - Paul: Regarding Rob P's question regarding Riposte Strike: Technically, the power is listed as a "Standard Action," not as an "Immediate Interrupt." Also, the ability to use an attack power as part of the Immediate Interrupt is not a "requirement," but, rather, an option. In these regards, the power may very well be allowed. However, that being said, it seems to me that the "spirit" of this house rule (as opposed to the letter of the rule) is to avoid slowing down combat;
Jul 8, 2012 9:43 PM - SofaKing: Just to be clear we are using pathfinder rules IE a 20 point buy to build chars?
Jul 3, 2012 2:36 PM - Tracy: Also, please sign up and commit to the other 4 adventures in this and I'll lock those too and changes the dates to tentative. If everyone can list their preference in time in each one to that would be super helpful in planning. Especially preference on single or double session so I can schedule appropriately. I'm also happy taking a week off if necessary but I'd like to avoid going more than 14 days without playing or momentum lags. Cheers.
Jul 3, 2012 2:27 PM - Tracy: Awesome. We can be totally flexible. Sporadic Sundays to accomodate campaigns, girl friends, family, a weekend in the beach, etc. Got it - no worries. This is worth playing through its entirety and I would really rather due it with the same group than how Giants ended up having only 1 member play through all mods and starting the story from scratch every time! I will lock this then. :)
Jul 3, 2012 1:05 PM - Xerek: I'd like to take a weekend off in sept to go to the beach again, but I'm pretty flexible. To officially say it, I'm in! Can't wait!
Jul 3, 2012 12:09 PM - Rob P: I still prefer saturdays but i can do the occasional sunday. I play in a home game on sundays but they are flexible. Hence the need for a heads up, and it having the be occasional
Jul 3, 2012 9:30 AM - SofaKing: Oh and if we could do some Sunday's that would be cool too.
Jul 3, 2012 9:29 AM - SofaKing: I can commit to a weekly campaingn starting in August. I am going on vacation sometime between September and October. Other than that the only thing that might cause issue is the occasional mandatory wife event.
Jul 3, 2012 8:05 AM - Paul: I can commit, starting on August 4th, for a weekly campaign. I will am planning some vacation time in November and December for the holidays. Other than that, I tend to stay in NYC year round.
Jul 3, 2012 12:17 AM - Tracy: So now that I have five of you signed up...I'm more than happy to accommodate or make any scheduling changes for the entire campaign based on group consensus. The dates shown for the entire run are tentative. We could do Saturday or Sunday, we can play double or single sessions, we can have this go into January if necessary. The proposed dates are optimized stream lining to plow through the adventure and aren't set in stone. If you are willing to commit to the run, do so, and I'll lock it.
Jul 2, 2012 11:32 PM - SofaKing: I am definitely interested in a long haul weekly campaign, and would be willing to do Saturdays, though I would prefer Sundays until football season starts. Saturday is usually my wife's day.
Jul 1, 2012 12:33 AM - kentmagus: Hmm.. Saturdays from Summer to Fall. I like to do other things on Saturday nights in summer. I'm commit to weeknights, but Saturday seems to be the majority opinion. I will have to think this over.
Jun 28, 2012 11:21 AM - Tracy: lol - I live on the G line (literally the Clinton Washington stop for both the C and the G line) so it won't be near as bad as you think if we play here! But yeah Saturday's my preference. We'll be able to make this adventure extremely flexible with double/single sessions and what not with the same five players.
Jun 28, 2012 11:15 AM - Paul: Brooklyn's a tough one for me to. I am in Astoria, and would have to take the dreaded (dare I say) G train. I prefer Saturdays as well.
Jun 28, 2012 11:12 AM - Rob P: Honestly i prefer saturdays myself because durong the week i work till 6. If its in brooklyn then i would be able to make it at 7:30/8pm
Jun 27, 2012 11:28 PM - Paul: Alright then. I am going to commit. I know that over the course of 2-3 months of play, something work or family related will come up at the lat minute (probably for everyone), but as long as there is some flexibility, I can commit to a regular weekly campaign starting on August 2.
Jun 27, 2012 11:19 PM - Tracy: That would be awesome, you're absolutely right. If I had five players willing to commit to the entirety, I could be very accommodating with the schedule and we could play it through as it was meant to be played. That would be ideal as this is worth the commitment and to be honest, there is a lot of DM work involved even with the conversion so it would give me more time to prep which = more time for me to go crazy with planning, and handouts, and models, and....
Jun 27, 2012 11:07 PM - Paul: I'm up for an old-fashioned "home" style campaign set in the Nentir Vale. I would venture to guess that once there are 5 committed adventurers, then the game schedule could be adjusted depending upon everyone's weekly availability; as long as there is a true commitment to being a part of the entire adventure. I myself still need a little time before I can commit at this point.
Jun 27, 2012 10:59 PM - Tracy: Minus the occasional double session, but I do like Saturdays... :)
Jun 27, 2012 10:58 PM - Tracy: I'm actually debating running this from my apartment in Brooklyn. Then we can consume whatever we want. I wouldn't be adverse to running several weeknight sessions instead of Saturday doubles only. I decided to go Saturday double sessions for convenience of scheduling on my part over what my actual availability is. I'm open to anything expect Wednesday due to my home campaign. This will make it more like 24-28 sessions but if people were willing to commit, this adventure is that cool!
Jun 27, 2012 6:36 PM - Xerek: Also, what about having doubles somewhere we can imbibe choice alcoholic beverages?
Jun 27, 2012 6:25 PM - Matt H: You're anticipating the double sessions running around 8 hours a pop, yes? I'd love to participate, but my primary concern is committing to one full day every weekend...it's just tough to swing that with other commitments. I'm not presuming to speak for anybody else, but if there were a possibility of running single session weeknight games with occasional weekend doubles, it would be much easier for me to make the schedule work.
Jun 25, 2012 11:41 PM - Tracy: For all of those interested: I realize it is hard to commit to this for an entire 2 months of play. If we break the campaign down, it will take 12-14 sessions to do. If you can commit with only missing 2(ish) sessions it is okay.
Jun 25, 2012 11:36 PM - Matt H: This looks awesome. Tracy: I know I'd have to miss a game at the end of September...is that workable?
Jun 22, 2012 7:26 PM - Tracy: The campaign will take you into paragon tier if you play through the entire adventure. If I can get 5 committed players for the entire run (every Saturday ending in November) I will lock it so you cannot be bumped. This way we can play it as it was meant to be played and you can keep your found loot from adventure to adventure. Any player that commits to the entirety (if we cannot get a group) will be responsible for quest items and handouts.
Jun 22, 2012 6:48 PM - Tracy: I ran this in 3.5 and I can't wait to run it again. The conversion looks great! This truly is one of the best DnD Adventures they published. Up there with Ravenloft, Demon Web Pits, and ToH.
