Introductory D&D Adventure
Cost: $0.00
Level: 1

First Session: Sunday -- August 19th, 2012 -- 11:00 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 1 session

Description:
This is a level 1 adventure run by a Meetup Dungeon Master to introduce new players to the meetup, to the Campaign Gaming rules, and to teach people how to play Dungeons & Dragons. Of course long-term meetup members are welcome to join in the fun and meet new members, but brand new members get priority seating via an artificially inflated 100 RSVP score.

This is not always the same D&D adventure. The Dungeon Masters are given a list of level 1 adventures to choose from. They will state in the comments section the name of the adventure and a little teaser text on what players can look forward to.

Look for Dungeon Master's who have earned high numbers in the "DM Feedback" section next to their name. If they have not earned votes, they themselves are most likely beginners, or not vetted by this meetup yet. It is like buying something from someone on Ebay that has no feedback: you are taking all the risk into your own hands. Also avoid Dungeon Master's who do not put a real picture of themselves on their profile.

Aug 21, 2012 10:46 AM - Capt_Dan: Hey guys, if you're looking for something a little longer, I can definitely recommend Avacc's Lair of the Spiderqueen adventure running from the middle of Sept.
Aug 20, 2012 12:30 PM - agustin: Hello Dan, cool game, fun taking down a dragon at first level, a few lessons from this game, always have a back up healer and do a pregame check to validate that all characters are optimized for attack capability
Aug 19, 2012 10:03 PM - Capt_Dan: Great Job guys, I thought you all did really well; you basiclly nailed it, but JUST overreached at the end... Call it a Pyrhic victory, you did kill the Necromancer after all, just got dealt with by his vile minions... If you can make it, Matts Level 1-4 on the RPGA side is well worth going for.
Aug 19, 2012 10:37 AM - Rob M.: Great, thanks for the directions and number. I got here earlier than needed, so I'm hanging in the starbucks across the street. I'll mosey over around 11.
Aug 19, 2012 9:08 AM - Capt_Dan: See below - nine one seven 400 9293 if you need it.
Aug 19, 2012 8:44 AM - Rob M.: Two Qs: Where in Citicentre? And does anyone have a contact phone number in the very likely event I get lost once I'm there?
Aug 19, 2012 8:43 AM - Capt_Dan: Beefpelican - in the Atrium, you shouldn't have too much trouble spotting us.
Aug 19, 2012 4:00 AM - Mathias Schnell: Sorry for the last minute, but I'm backing out of this. Too unsure about what's going on at the moment and I'm not even sure I want to go out today anyway. Anyone else interested is free to take my spot and I hope you guys have fun.
Aug 19, 2012 2:05 AM - beefpelican: Hope someone reads this before tomorrow...
Where in the Citigroup center will we be?
Aug 18, 2012 9:00 AM - Eric J: I'm good for the longer adventure provided the party is as well.
Aug 17, 2012 5:33 PM - Capt_Dan: Eric - no problem, I'll bring both, so people can decide at the table. Zach - Tanks are easier, once you understand the mark system. We can build an effective one that morning, no problem.
Aug 17, 2012 1:27 PM - Eric J: I might be able to go till 6. Let me make some arrangements and I will confirm by tonight or early tomorrow!
Aug 17, 2012 1:27 PM - Zach: 6 hours sounds good to me. Also, agustin if you wanna bring a tank I'm cool with whatever. an archer sounds like fun to me also. I've not tanked before so if it is something that requires a higher level a skill i'll happily bow to someone with the experience.
Aug 17, 2012 12:25 PM - Capt_Dan: It looks pretty balanced at the moment, so I'd go ahead and bring the character you most want to play.
Aug 17, 2012 12:19 PM - agustin: I can play until 6pm,I like to play controllers but can play a tank if the party needs one
Aug 17, 2012 12:11 PM - Capt_Dan: Okay folks, this is all looking good, quick recap - definitely sunday, 11am for the workshop, 12 for the game. I have two options, and they depend on how long people have. I can run a ~4hr game, or if people can stay, I can run a ~6hr game. The 6hr is definitely better, but only if everyone can stay till around 6pm. Let me know.
Aug 14, 2012 6:18 PM - beefpelican: I already have Saturday plans, sorry. And I'll make a character ahead of time, but a review of the rules would be nice.
Aug 14, 2012 4:00 PM - Eric J: I can only make it on sunday. I'll bring the character I made for this adventure-but I'd like to go over the rules regarding flanking
Aug 14, 2012 1:47 PM - Capt_Dan: Second, I intend to BRIEFLY run through the character sheet and how the various options play out, and then give a tutorial in how the combat works through. I even have a useful handout! Are there any elements of the game anyone wants me to talk/show/demo? Does anyone want to create characters at the table, or just run through the builds they already have? Again, if you feel comfortable with the rules, there is no need to attend, just come at twelve.
Aug 14, 2012 1:44 PM - Capt_Dan: First, I'm actually completely flexible over Saturday or sunday, if anyone has a preference. Any change from sunday needs complete consensus form all those signed up though.
Aug 13, 2012 7:34 PM - Zach: i'll be there at 11 as well. thanks for doing that.
Aug 13, 2012 7:19 PM - Mathias Schnell: May have to cancel this. Just heard about some plans over the weekend. Depends if it's on Saturday or Sunday.
Aug 11, 2012 2:58 PM - beefpelican: Okay then, I'll be there at 11.
Aug 10, 2012 8:22 PM - Eric J: I think I've got the hang of creating characters, but I'll come at 11 to go over the basics again. Thanks for being so helpful to newcomers, Dan!
Aug 10, 2012 7:49 PM - Rob M.: I'll come at 11:00 since I don't know the char. creation stuff for 4e. I've listened to and watched a bunch of gameplay podcasts and vids tho, so I have some grounding in that.
Aug 10, 2012 2:04 PM - Capt_Dan: A lot of the concepts and surface details are similar, but 4e is definitely different. If you've never played 4e before, it would be very useful, and I'll make sure it's as entertaining as possible.
Aug 10, 2012 12:58 PM - Mathias Schnell: Pathfinder was built off of D&D 3.5e rules I believe. The die system in 4e is the same and a lot of concepts are similar to 3.5e, but there are a few fundamental differences you need to get accustomed to.
Aug 10, 2012 12:53 PM - beefpelican: I've played Pathfinder before. Is it different enough that a clinic would be necessary?
Aug 10, 2012 11:53 AM - Capt_Dan: Guys, if you would like, I'm quite happy to spend the first hour on a character creation and rules clinic. So, those who want to learn a bit more about the game and character creation come at 11, and the rest at 12 to start the adventure - would this work for anyone?
Aug 10, 2012 11:20 AM - Capt_Dan: Definitely 4e. It's always 4e, unless it specifically says otherwise somewhere...
Aug 10, 2012 11:18 AM - beefpelican: What edition are we playing, btw?
Aug 10, 2012 10:31 AM - Rob M.: I'm definitely interested. I like to play bards. Whatever race fits is fine.
Aug 10, 2012 9:51 AM - Mathias Schnell: In that case I'll bring a Wizard or something similar for the controller role. Rogues seem to be listed as 'Strikers', which is true, but I'm not sure if they have the huge pool of skills like they did in 3.5. Wizard should still be useful for both magic skills and controller-like spells though.
Aug 10, 2012 6:48 AM - Zach: ill take on the tank class. I like the idea of using a shield.
Aug 10, 2012 3:57 AM - beefpelican: Hi, I'm Chris. I'd be happy to go healer or tanky if that's what's needed. I've played a cleric before and liked it.
Aug 9, 2012 7:40 PM - agustin: look forward to it
Aug 9, 2012 6:12 PM - Eric J: cool. I'll create a few characters at the ready depending on what the party shapes out to be.
Aug 9, 2012 2:30 PM - Capt_Dan: Eric, you can use the same 1st level build - but they have to be at 0xp and no magic items. The RPGA side is the place for continuation of characters/adventures. As ever, keep an eye on what everyone else is going with and make sure you have a reasonable mix between you, with a Striker, Defender, Controller and Leader class, if possible.
Aug 9, 2012 9:26 AM - Mathias Schnell: I'm new to the Campaign-style play, but not to D&D 4E. Either way, I'd like to join in on the festivities. I'll probably roll a Rogue or something skillful like that. Want to try and steer away from healer/tanky classes.
Aug 9, 2012 6:38 AM - Eric J: Dan, can we use level 1 characters from a previous quest? Or do you prefer to them to be green for this adventure? Depending on how the party shapes up, I might use my Human Ranger from Saturday's game--or something else to help round things out.
Aug 9, 2012 12:10 AM - Capt_Dan: Not yet, depending on what we go with, I'm very happy to steer you through. Just turn up and be keen as a minimum!
Aug 8, 2012 10:43 PM - Zach: I'm very interested in this. Anything in particular I should know character-wise in terms of what to bring? I have a couple ideas of what I'd like to play in mind, but I'm open to the needs/wants of the group too. It's been long enough since I played (and back then we bent the rules anyway I think) that I really have no idea what I'm doing, or what to expect. Just looking to have a fun day of letting my imagination go wild.
Aug 8, 2012 12:17 AM - Capt_Dan: Some leeway on this adventure, if anyone has particular requests, otherwise, I'll bring something good...
