Teaching/Learning Dungeon Master Workshop
Cost: $0.00
Level: 0

First Session: Tuesday -- August 28th, 2012 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 1 session

This is a session where people looking to learn how to run their own D&D game, or get better running games, can explore and learn from an experienced Dungeon Master(DM). The instructor may or may not assign reading beforhand.

It will still be a fun time, as most likely you all will be playing through a published adventure, just with all statistics and information out in the open.

Aug 28, 2012 11:47 PM - Capt_Dan: Paul, no problem, I totally understand. Thank you for putting up a note so I know what happened, hope the work went okay.
Aug 28, 2012 11:33 PM - Paul: Captain Dan, please accept my late apologies for not being able to attend tonight's workshop, which I so very much had been hoping to attend. I was deluged with time-sensitive work at the last minute, and was unable to devote any attention to anything else other than work for these past few hours. Again, my sincere apologies. Paul
Aug 28, 2012 7:11 PM - Ross H: Be there shortly, apologies for my lateness...
Aug 28, 2012 6:44 PM - Mathias Schnell: Im at the cafe, 2nd floor. Where is everyone?
Aug 28, 2012 5:28 PM - Ross H: Sounds good. FYI, I may run a few minutes late - need to catch up with a colleague before I leave the office. Go ahead and dive in without me if you get a quorum prior to my arrival.
Aug 28, 2012 3:54 PM - Capt_Dan: You don't even need dice, but by all means bring them, there will be some rolling, I think. Note book & pencil if you wish.
Aug 28, 2012 2:59 PM - Ross H: Dan, anything other than dice & a pencil?
Aug 28, 2012 2:31 PM - Capt_Dan: Ha, I'd just checked to make sure I had put the right location down. DM's tyrany, I'm afraid, I live near here. It's pretty good. We will be at the back on the mezzanine.
Aug 28, 2012 2:14 PM - Mathias Schnell: Just now noticed this is at Cafe Au Bon Gout. Whole time I thought this was at the Citigroup Center. I've actually never been to this cafe before, so this should be interesting.
Aug 22, 2012 4:16 PM - Hartke: Alright Captain! I'll check some other meetups and join a regular game table to start.
Thanks for the piece of advice! ;)
Aug 22, 2012 3:31 PM - Capt_Dan: I absolutely don't meanto put you off. If you're happy with wha tI've said an wish to attend anyway go for it, though I will expect people to be able to pick up a Lvl 1 Char hand-out and just run it. You might have more luck/fun with either of the indtroductory adventures being run later on next week, Matt's will be a fun one session event, and Johns will be a very good 4-5 session adventure. Both are good examples of what we (this site) are about. Plus you get an automatic seat in either as a n
Aug 22, 2012 3:29 PM - Capt_Dan: Second, it's prinicpally focused on running a session - ~4hrs - as we have them on the site. So, wilst it will cover multiple sessions of modules, it is NOT about extended games in enduring worlds.
Aug 22, 2012 3:27 PM - Capt_Dan: Hartke, you remain quite welcome to attend, but I should let you know a few things. First, this is really for people who understand the game quite well already. If you've read several of the books and feel confident with it, then go for it, but this won't be a space for learning to play.
Aug 22, 2012 2:46 PM - Hartke: Hi Capt_Dan! I am a vet 3.5 player, but have never really played 4th ed.
I plan on joining this session to see how the 4th ed mechanics work and share my experience on running/playing long campaigns and unconventional characters.
Aug 22, 2012 11:38 AM - Capt_Dan: No, you don't need anything - though people should maybe bring their own dice - but I'm not sure this should be your first experience with us? It's definitely not a game experience. Do you have much experience with 4e?
Aug 22, 2012 11:09 AM - Hartke: So there's no need to bring anything, right? (this will be my first meetup here in NYC)
Aug 21, 2012 5:18 PM - Capt_Dan: Mathias, I imagine more a bit of the stuff I hope to cover will help. I won't go into designing campaigns too much - not my area anyway - but I will talk about good and bad adventures and encounters and how to handle unusaul player movement through a fixed story, so should be useful.
Aug 21, 2012 12:47 PM - Mathias Schnell: @Capt_Dan Not sure if this is related, but I do have ideas/plans for my own custom games/campaigns in the works. I guess this falls more under game creation than it does game running, but any input you could give I'd appreciate. We can discuss before/after the playthrough of course.
Aug 21, 2012 12:31 PM - Capt_Dan: Definitely won't go past 11. Also, whilst I'm running this, and have somethings in mind, I am also quite happy to hear from anyone attending/interested in what things they don't feel comfortable with, or want to go into detail on.
Aug 21, 2012 11:53 AM - Mathias Schnell: Any extra bit of DMing help I can get I'm willing to take. I can't stay too late though, so 11PM is my limit. I doubt it will be that long though since this is more of a learning session than an actual game.
Aug 20, 2012 3:07 PM - Ross H: I can probably make this. I might be a bit late, but I'll keep you in the loop as to my status.
Aug 20, 2012 2:41 PM - Capt_Dan: FYI - I'll run this for as many people as can make it, even just 1.
Aug 20, 2012 2:39 PM - Paul: Tuesday, August 28, would work for me as an alternative.
Aug 20, 2012 2:36 PM - Paul: I won't be able to make August 29th, as I will be out of town. Anything after September 5 works for me though. Thanks for setting this up.
Aug 20, 2012 2:34 PM - Capt_Dan: I'll use the Red Box adventure as the basis, if you have it, feel free to read right through it, otherwise don't worry, it's not important. Finally, you don't need any other guides or books, just a reasonable grasp of the game rules and concepts.
Aug 20, 2012 2:31 PM - Capt_Dan: I'll try and cover three things: running combat - easier than you may think; running a table inbetween combat; and keeping a story on track.
Aug 20, 2012 2:29 PM - Capt_Dan: Hello! Okay, I hope this is useful to people. My intent is to provide some generic characters, and play through a mod, like an open hand of cards, as a teaching exercise. All you need is to turn up interested, but don't expect to actually 'play'...
