D&D Encounters 9 - Web of the Spider Queen
Cost: $0.00
Level: 1

First Session: Wednesday -- September 12th, 2012 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 3 sessions

Description:
This is the 9th season of D&D Encounters. Released to support the book "Into the Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Book" as well as the "Rise of the Underdark" marketing blitz. "These Encounters adventures have been completely awesome so far." They are meant to start off level 1 characters. There were meant to be 13, 60 minute sessions. That means they can probably be finished in 3 sessions.

Long past are the days when drow ruled over Shadowdale from the Twisted Tower—or are they? Beneath the sleepy farming community, an old evil stirs. The drow and their foul Underdark minions have set eyes on the Dalelands, but to what end is anyone’s guess. Now, it’s up to an unlikely band of adventurers to defend Shadowdale from the drow threat and learn what Lolth and her villainous followers are up to. Success means a respite from danger. Failure could doom the surface world.

You may only use classes from the following sources: "Into the Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Book", "Heroes of the Fallen Lands", "Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms". The races allowed are: Dragonborn, Drow, Dwarf, Eladrin, Elf, Goblin, Half-Elf, Halfling, Half-Orc, Human, Kobold, Svirfneblin, and Tiefling. "Themes" are permitted and encouraged, but they must come from "Into the Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Book" or be related from Dragon Magazine.

Oct 26, 2012 10:08 AM - Rob R: Thanks all for a fun game and especially for Art for weaving the tale.
Oct 25, 2012 11:01 PM - kentmagus: We beat the bad guy with our front-line combatants having reached the end of our rope! Of course, we only did that with the help of Elminster, and artifact-level magic, but still. Details!
Oct 25, 2012 11:55 AM - Rob R: Dartak can smell freedom from the Dales. Just a little longer.........
Oct 25, 2012 10:48 AM - AVacc: Just a little reminder we are on for tonight....
Oct 18, 2012 9:57 AM - AVacc: See you all there :)))
Oct 17, 2012 11:46 PM - Brian H: 6:15 works for me, too.
Oct 17, 2012 8:06 PM - kentmagus: I can make it at 6:15.
Oct 15, 2012 7:25 AM - Saj: i can make it at 615
Oct 12, 2012 11:50 AM - Rob R: If everyone else can, I will make it so ; )
Oct 12, 2012 11:49 AM - AVacc: Reward Summary Chapter 1 - 1400 XP / 170gp
Reward Summary Chapter 2 - 1350 XP / 80gp
Reward Summary Chapter 3 - 300 XP / 50gp (So far)

Total = 3050 XP / 300gp
Oct 12, 2012 11:33 AM - AVacc: Cant seem to get the date thing to work Next session will be Thursday the 18th - Can we start a little earlier? Perhaps 6:15?
Oct 12, 2012 10:37 AM - Rob R: Don't know if it'll be necessary (probably not) but I've leveled up my PC to 4 in case we level again.
Oct 11, 2012 5:44 PM - Saj: I may be 10 min late. Sorry
Oct 11, 2012 3:25 PM - Brian H: See you all there!
Oct 11, 2012 2:30 PM - Rob R: I'll be there
Oct 11, 2012 1:34 PM - AVacc: Hopefully everyone is good for tonight.
Oct 8, 2012 10:54 PM - Saj: Sounds good
Oct 4, 2012 2:38 PM - Rob R: OK, next games - Thursday Oct 11th & 18th. check. No worries, things happen, especially work.
Oct 4, 2012 1:26 PM - AVacc: Please don't hate me - I was just informed that I am working on Tuesday. We can push the extra game to next week... Soooo sorry. If there are other options please let's discuss them here.
Oct 2, 2012 3:39 PM - AVacc: Tuesday it is... Thanks, everyone.
Oct 2, 2012 3:36 PM - Rob R: Tuesday & Thursday are my only 2 reliably "free" weeknights.
Oct 2, 2012 2:43 PM - AVacc: OK - Is Wed better? If we are agreed on Tuesday we will play Tuesday AND THURSDAY, next week. That good for everyone? and once again sorry for the trouble.
Oct 2, 2012 2:27 PM - Rob R: OK, since everyone else can do Tuesday, I'll do whatever I have to, to keep my Tuesday free next week. See everyone next Tuesday.
Oct 2, 2012 1:06 PM - AVacc: Correct! THERE WILL BE NO GAME THIS WEEK. Sorry - Real Life got me - I would like to play TWO games NEXT week. Any day except Friday is good for me.
Oct 2, 2012 1:00 PM - kentmagus: Oh Tuesday and Thursday next week, but no games this week. Sure. Thus there's no game on the week of October 1st and two games on the week of October 7th.
Oct 2, 2012 12:49 AM - Saj: tues is good for me
Oct 1, 2012 10:11 PM - Brian H: Tuesday would work for me.
Oct 1, 2012 5:28 PM - Rob R: It happens. I'll have to get back to you on Tuesday. It looks doable just need to confirm.
Oct 1, 2012 3:33 PM - AVacc: Gents, - I really hate to do this but I have a personal issue that will prevent me from running this week - I can get two games in next week (any day except Friday) - We should try to get the two games in. I'm really, really sorry but it is unavoidable... Let me know what you think for a second day next week. Tues seems good but I will leave it up to you.
Sep 27, 2012 9:20 AM - AVacc: As the drow Totemist draws her last breath the spider-shaped totem she caried clatters to the ground. She spits blood as she whispers in Common. "I should have known that usurper would get me killed. When you see Valan Jaelre, tell him that I will have a knife waiting for him in the next world!"
Sep 18, 2012 3:37 PM - Rob R: Art - I have your book w/ me.
Sep 16, 2012 11:09 PM - Saj: What, and deprive the world of the epic tale of the band of the four rubies? The stalwart kobold, pound for pound the fiercest dragon in the realms; our brilliant Eladrin swordmage, the only one who can reach the high shelf; and our all powerful goblin wizard, a paragon of his kind.
Sep 14, 2012 6:03 PM - Rob R: amulet of health gives it's wearer poison resistance 2 (along w/ bonuses to non ac defenses) I think the Bard should wear it to help keep the singing going - but only if he agrees to stop singing about zix, gix, wix, xix... whatever the "wizard" is called.
Sep 14, 2012 6:01 PM - Rob R: Armor of Durability is hide, chain, scale & plate so as agreed to before the kobold slips own his shiny new plate. but first he makes sure he runs it sufficiently in the dirt to make it more comfortable and like his previous armor.
Sep 14, 2012 5:59 PM - Rob R: the campaign got off to a good start. It's quite a difference when you get to play "evil" races.
Sep 14, 2012 3:42 PM - Nileoc: How was the game guys? I wish I could've joined, but classes are intense this year!
Sep 14, 2012 9:57 AM - AVacc: No worries. Tuesday is fine....
Sep 14, 2012 9:56 AM - Rob R: BTW, I had on my wish list @ Amazon after peeking through it last night I decided to order it today.
Sep 14, 2012 9:55 AM - Rob R: #^^&%#*&(*$*$)($)( - yeah, really sorry my bad. I kept peeking in the book when ever we had a lull and forgot to actually give it back to you. I saw it in my bag this morning. I brought it with me to work. Do you want to try to meet up? Or is Tuesday OK with you.
Sep 13, 2012 11:00 PM - AVacc: Rob do you have my drow book?
Sep 13, 2012 2:38 PM - kentmagus: Well, it's a little late, but my doctor has cleared me to use the computer. So.... I was going to be trained in Perception and Stealth anyway.
Sep 13, 2012 1:57 PM - AVacc: Saj: Your blink dog is in my bag ;)
Sep 13, 2012 1:21 PM - Saj: Doh, I did not print out the sheet for my level 1 blink dog from my fey beast tamer theme. I would appreciate if some could print that out for me, I don't have access to a computer ATM.
Sep 13, 2012 10:31 AM - Rob R: Instead I made a Kobold Staff-weilding Knight (with the feat that allows staves to be weilded one-handed by small creatures. He still be a Holy Warrior but alas, no class features to support that.
Sep 13, 2012 10:30 AM - Rob R: Thanks for the idea James. Totally forgot about the Melee Training Feats. Though I really wanted to make a Kobold Cavalier which this doesn't help with ; ) He wouldn't have been an awesome sneaky holy warrior.
Sep 12, 2012 8:29 PM - Brian H: He does have a bit of wisdom/insight, though! (not perception, though -- alas)
Sep 12, 2012 8:26 PM - Brian H: Not sure about the skald, but unfortunately my particular goblin is not very sneaky at all. When he's trying to be quiet, he's liable to accidentally drop a book of arcane knowledge on the floor...
Sep 12, 2012 8:19 PM - James L: Rob, they suggest in some article somewhere you can make a Knight and take "Melee Training" and use any other Stat for all your melee basic attacks, which is all you do. You'd only lose a minor amount of damage. That way you can make a Knight with any possible race.
Sep 12, 2012 12:02 PM - AVacc: As you check the ruby you carry to Her Radiance Dareen Travaskyr in Daggerdale's Temple of Lathander for the hundredth time, you can't seem to shake the feeling that you are being watched.
Sep 12, 2012 11:50 AM - Rob R: I betya the little bugger (Goblin) is sneaky. They always are ; )
Sep 12, 2012 11:50 AM - Rob R: Essentials defenders from HoFL & HoFK are primary str. I could play a cavalier and have a little charisma but not enough and the skald would have charisma covered in spades anaway
Sep 11, 2012 10:27 PM - Saj: sadly, not very good at stealth or theivery, so I am hoping someone else does a better job.
Sep 10, 2012 10:29 PM - Saj: i think i am going to be a char based goblin skald. I am a skill based char with a pet blink dog.
Sep 10, 2012 8:52 PM - Nileoc: Wish I had the time to join this. Have fun gentlemen!
Sep 10, 2012 3:27 PM - AVacc: *The Eladrin hears an old but confidant voice as he meditates in reverie* "Stealth and keen awareness will aid you and your comrades in the days to come..."
Sep 10, 2012 2:55 PM - Rob R: Is anyone playing a stealthy / trap-disarming character? How about a wisdom based w/ Insight & Perception?
Sep 10, 2012 11:57 AM - Rob R: That's my current plan.
Sep 10, 2012 9:18 AM - AVacc: Rob - you could move your RPGA game to Thursday the 20th - We are playing Tuesday that week.
Sep 9, 2012 1:18 AM - Rob R: Thanks Zach. OK the little guy defender will be there.
Sep 9, 2012 1:17 AM - Rob R: No problem Zach. Stuff happens. Communication is always good and appreciated.
Sep 8, 2012 9:56 PM - Zach: sorry again guys. the issue is that i will be gettting off between 630 and 645 on the upper east side. not sure if i can make it there by 7 and i dont wanna keep folks waiting. really wish i could join, was looking forward to it
Sep 8, 2012 9:36 PM - AVacc: I also know of one other person not on the list here that might want in.
Sep 8, 2012 9:35 PM - AVacc: dragon fly kiss, there is a space open if you are interested
Sep 8, 2012 9:33 PM - Brian H: Yep, I'm definitely still in. I've got a goblin mage ready to go, but I can switch roles if we have a need.
Sep 8, 2012 9:29 PM - Rob R: Saj, these dates have me all screwed up (my fault). i will cancel my Thursday game I planned to run (and feel the wrath) as long as I know we have 4 players.
Sep 8, 2012 9:27 PM - Rob R: Brian H can you post a confirmation that your still in / aware of this. we too often have players commit and then forget. Considering there isn't also a post from you below - I'd just feel more comfortable at this point that we acrually have 4 players.
Sep 8, 2012 4:40 PM - Zach: sorry to do this guys, but i just got a new schedule for work the next couple months and weeknights are now out for me. best of luck though! this seems like a pretty sweet adventure.
Sep 8, 2012 1:47 PM - Saj: Rob, are you still doing the RPGa game on the 13th?
Sep 8, 2012 12:35 PM - Saj: Cool, I am thinking a deep gnome cleric of stone. Speed 4 also, so I will be nearby the tank.
Sep 7, 2012 5:25 PM - Rob R: Yes, I'm looking at Deep Gnome Knight or Cavalier (w/ speed 4) "I'll get there when I get there."
Sep 7, 2012 1:19 PM - Saj: I think Rob was thinking he would be a deep gnome defender, so you don't have to limit your self to a tank
Sep 6, 2012 4:23 PM - Zach: looks like we need a tank. id be down, but id like to go about it as a druid with a bear companion. thoughts?
Sep 6, 2012 3:05 PM - AVacc: But evil has spies everywhere. Now, you might be the only thing standing between forces bent on a grisly fate for the temple's inhabitants.
Sep 6, 2012 3:04 PM - AVacc: You are that adventurer!
Sep 6, 2012 3:04 PM - AVacc: Her Radiance Dareen Travaskyr has led the Temple of Lathander’s Light for many years, making it a source of good and civilization in the otherwise wild Daggerdale. When the priestess received a vision urging her to create a powerful icon against an impending darkness, she employed an adventurer to bring her a very special ruby to complete her divinely inspired tasks.
Sep 3, 2012 9:41 PM - AVacc: Zach Absolutely! .
Sep 3, 2012 9:38 PM - Zach: so, with all this being said. is there still room for me in this game? i notice that there are only 4 of us now, but maybe folks just haven't confirmed completely yet? no hard feelings either way, just trying to plan out what's next.
Sep 3, 2012 6:28 PM - Rob R: It looks like I'll be playing a defender. Maybe a Deep Gnome.
Sep 2, 2012 11:42 AM - Saj: I third Rob(I think that's a word). I love the Rpga story and format, but the tight timelines can be a bit restrictive. I like having interparty banter without worrying about screwing up the dm's timing.
Aug 31, 2012 3:05 PM - AVacc: Flumps! NEVER! I made them in to soft cuddly kittens! Everyone loves kittens!
Aug 31, 2012 2:59 PM - Rob R: AVacc - I'm on board with your idea. I just better get my share of Drow in this adventure. I don't want to find out you changed them to flumphs.... ; )
Aug 31, 2012 2:57 PM - Rob R: See the desciption of the prequel adventure http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Drow.aspx?x=dnd/drow/1/paxeast
Aug 31, 2012 2:56 PM - Rob R: If this allows us to fit in an extra wandering monster encounter and (more importantly) understand the plot because the DM isn't rushing through social encounters or just spoonfeeding us the details, then it sounds like a win win.
Aug 31, 2012 2:56 PM - Capt_Dan: Yeah, I completely seccond Rob, I don't think there's going to be very much changed from the mod, just fleshed out a little so it can breathe as a more rewarding adventure.
Aug 31, 2012 2:55 PM - Rob R: The second week is to accomodate extra time so that the players don't have to rush through the roleplay to get in x - counters per session.
Aug 31, 2012 2:54 PM - Rob R: He is adding 2 extra weeks. One is to run a prequel - The Sun Never Rises.
Aug 31, 2012 2:52 PM - Rob R: James, I agree with you regarding QA and everyone being on board with expectations but I think you and AVacc are not far off.
Aug 31, 2012 1:51 PM - AVacc: Pushing for 5+ encounters per session just does not seem like a good idea.
Aug 31, 2012 1:32 PM - AVacc: I added the PAX adventure and that adds encounters to the 13 in the book - and I if an extra spider here or there strays too much form the published adventure than sorry if I missed some point of DMing.
Aug 31, 2012 1:30 PM - AVacc: Matt - You are reading too much into what I am suggesting - To say that it would be not canonical would be totally wrong - we were talking about the amount of time it would take. I just don't want to power through it in three weeks
Aug 31, 2012 1:26 PM - AVacc: If what I have outlined here is a problem I am happy to let you run it or cancel the game. It's your sandbox and I honestly and truly have no problem with you running it as you see fit.
Aug 31, 2012 1:25 PM - AVacc: I misunderstood the campaign mechanism on the site to be a way to have well - campaigns... I ran the slaying stone and I think the players enjoyed my style DMing - I am not a rules lawyer and that is not how I run my games. There are folks here that want that style of play. I was hoping to cater to them.
Aug 31, 2012 1:22 PM - AVacc: I understand what you are doing and I appreciate it very much. I did not mean to take a disrespectful tone.
Aug 31, 2012 1:20 PM - James L: Maybe I should get a quorum and try to come up with something agreeable to everyone.
Aug 31, 2012 1:18 PM - James L: I guess I never touched on the topic of what is the standard acceptable service.
Aug 31, 2012 1:17 PM - James L: As organizer, I am in the business of quality assurance. Yes, Standardization has it's downsides, an adherence to the rules, and a uniformity of experience, and what can feel like oppressive limitations.
Aug 31, 2012 1:17 PM - James L: I think it might be better to clarify something. The reason I run this site is so that I can offer a service: (my DMing) in order to receive a service in exchange: (other people DMing). The only way that stays an even exchange is if everyone providing the service agrees on what's the standard acceptable service.
Aug 31, 2012 12:56 PM - Matt H: That's good to know -- thanks for clarifying; I'll probably sit this one out, then. I totally get wanting to customize the adventure, but having not played/read it before I'd prefer my own introduction to it to be canonical. Have fun, and don't get stuck inside any Clouds of Darkness...nasty business, that.
Aug 31, 2012 12:48 PM - AVacc: am running it because it is a good story not because I like the specific encounters.
Aug 31, 2012 12:48 PM - AVacc: Page 2 of the adventure has instructions on customizing it - I have no intention of following the book word for word. Indeed I have better maps and slightly deeper NPC development - The point of a campaign in my opinion and at least some of the people signed up for this game is to get away from the rigid lockstep of the RPGA games - If you are looking to "get through" the official module then I am the wrong DM for you. If you want to run this, please do. I am more than happy to play it. I am run
Aug 31, 2012 12:39 PM - James L: I don't know how everyone else feels. Maybe we can put it to a vote. I really don't like the idea of anything "custom crafted" when playing a published adventure. I was hoping for the "official" experience of the Encounters season. I'd just like to know if that's what's being offered.
Aug 31, 2012 12:14 PM - AVacc: Also since no one objected and because I don't really have a choice I need to change the session on the 20th to the 18th - Not sure if that affects you James.
Aug 31, 2012 12:12 PM - AVacc: There will be roughly 16 encounters not counting RP and/or random encounters I may throw in. If we average 3 encounters per week that will work out to 5 weeks. I have no plan to slow things down I also don't want to rush through it either. - I am pretty sure we can do it in 4 weeks but since there have been so many scheduling overlaps I thought I would hedge my bet and try to save some players future planing hassle.
Aug 31, 2012 11:59 AM - James L: Sorry Zach, but I can make Thursdays. It looks like this got pushed back a week. Does it really have to last 5 weeks though? I hope the pace isn't forcibly languorous.
Aug 30, 2012 3:26 PM - AVacc: Does anyone have an objection to moving the 9/20 session to Tuesday September 18th? I have a work conflict.
Aug 29, 2012 12:16 PM - Rob R: I'm thinking Goblin or Kobold
Aug 29, 2012 11:28 AM - AVacc: But evil has spies everywhere. Now, you might be the only thing standing between forces bent on a grisly fate for the temple's inhabitants.
Aug 29, 2012 11:27 AM - AVacc: Her Radiance Dareen Travaskyr has led the Temple of Lathander’s Light for many years, making it a source of good and civilization in the otherwise wild Daggerdale. When the priestess received a vision urging her to create a powerful icon against an impending darkness, she employed an adventurer to bring her a very special ruby to complete her divinely inspired tasks.
Aug 27, 2012 1:25 PM - beefpelican: Oh well, looks like i can't join without forcing someone out. Have fun.
Aug 24, 2012 10:41 PM - AVacc: No worries - we are starting at 7 but the nice thing about a campaign is that we do not have to force in X number of encounters. We can start a few mins late if need be.
Aug 24, 2012 8:04 PM - Zach: My one hesitation is a tutor a kid during the week, im usually done around 6-630, but you never know some nights. This sounds like a real fun time though so I'd like to try and make it work. thoughts?
Aug 24, 2012 8:47 AM - Zach: I think Thursdays will still work fine.
Aug 23, 2012 7:44 PM - David :
Aug 23, 2012 12:53 AM - AVacc: I moved this game to Thursday nights to accommodate some interested players. I hope that is not a problem for you, Zach.
Aug 22, 2012 9:49 AM - AVacc: It's really more like 4 weeks plus I am starting with an extra adventure before the mod –“ Rise of the Underdark! - The Sun Never Rises" - This was a teaser adventure introduced at PAX East this year - I added the extra week so we have some time to RP. Hoping to make this more than hack and slash through scripted encounters – It’s such a good story. So I wanted to block out the time - we can always end a week (or more) early if that is the way it plays out.
Aug 22, 2012 9:44 AM - James L: how'd you turn what was supposed to be 3 weeks into 5 weeks? you going to run this in ultra slow mode?
Aug 22, 2012 9:36 AM - AVacc: You may only use classes from the following sources: "Into the Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Book", "Heroes of the Fallen Lands", "Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms".
Aug 22, 2012 4:17 AM - kentmagus: 1. Are bladesingers allowed?
Aug 21, 2012 5:12 PM - beefpelican: Zach, the warlord seems to have some fantastic abilities for helping melee rogues hit things frequently.
Aug 21, 2012 12:10 PM - Zach: This sounds like a blast. I'm interested in playing some sort of striker, but whatever the group needs I can try and accommodate.
Aug 21, 2012 10:36 AM - AVacc: Matt - The themes are encouraged - Thanks for bringing it up.
Aug 21, 2012 10:20 AM - Matt H: This looks great -- just need to check my calendar.

Also: Dragon #413 has a bunch of Drow/Underdark related character themes that were related in connection with this season. Are those acceptable?
Aug 21, 2012 9:06 AM - AVacc: I added an extra week because I have a special treat - I will start the adventure with "Rise of the Underdark! - The Sun Never Rises" - This was a teaser adventure introduced at PAX East this year!
