Captain Slygo's Treasure
Cost: $0.00
Level: 3

First Session: Tuesday -- January 8th, 2013 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 1-2 sessions

For the past year, trade along the Silverwrack Coast has suffered from the attacks of a goblin pirate known as Captain Slygo. Fisherfolk have been particularly hard-hit by Captain Slygo and his ship, the Red Cutter. Of late, however, Slygo’s piracy has moved from high-seas robbery to maritime murder, and the adventurers are called on to settle the score.

Arrrhh! pirates, goblins, their islands, and more!

Jan 18, 2013 12:06 PM - Lisa: I'll be there all day.
Jan 18, 2013 11:33 AM - Ross H: FYI, I may try to go to Recess tomorrow for the first session of games - anyone else going to be there?
Jan 15, 2013 7:48 AM - Connolly206: Guys Rob is running an RPGA game starting Thursday night, it still has open spots if any of you want to join. After the praise Ross gave his DMing abilities on the way out I definitely want to see him in action.
Jan 10, 2013 3:38 PM - Rob R: I've always wanted but something would come up or I would forget. This year it's getting furniture delivered on the same day. Always something : (
Jan 10, 2013 3:17 PM - Ross H: I've never been to Recess, have any of you? It sounds like fun, and a good way to try some different games out! Anyone going?
Jan 9, 2013 8:53 PM - ogrehombre: Hey everyone, thanks for a fun first game. Much appreciated. And Ross, you ran a great game. Thanks to you especially for putting that together.
Jan 9, 2013 11:52 AM - Rob R: Well Done Ross and all the players. I had a great time. Arrgghhhh mateys.
Jan 9, 2013 11:07 AM - Lisa: Sorry to spam, but just in case someone wanted the answer as well: You just show up at 7pm and sign your name to the sheet. The game starts fifteen or twenty minutes later. It is a full house, but I haven't seen people turned away. It is $5. They are very friendly and you can jump in any week. For weekend games, you do need to sign up on the website. On a side note, Nerd NYC recess is coming up on January 19. That's a day-long gaming event run by Nerd NYC. http://nerdnyc.com/wordpress/recess
Jan 9, 2013 9:02 AM - Connolly206: Lisa, I can't do this wed, but would be interested in playing there some time. I've been to the store and its easy for me to get to. Is there some sort of sign up site like this one for those games? My email is connolly206@gmail.com
Jan 9, 2013 1:18 AM - Lisa: Thanks everyone. It's really fun playing with you. Ross, you're my favorite DM thus far. I see Ross posted the D&D next game. I'm playing a d&d next game at the twenty-sided store (362 Grand St.
Brooklyn, NY 11211) every Wednesday night at 7pm. Tomorrow is the second session so it's easy for anyone to jump in -- plus, since it's d&d next, nobody is an expert yet so it's okay if you're not one.
Jan 8, 2013 11:36 PM - Ross H: OK, heck with it. Since I've found I can successfully motivate myself to post games if I do so just after running a fun session, I've put up a D&D Next game in about a month - Reclaiming Blingdenstone. Hope some of you will be interested! http://www.rpgconnect.org/event_coop.php?event_id=500764
Jan 8, 2013 11:35 PM - Connolly206: Ross, thanks again. Guys it was good playing with you again, I'm looking forward to the next time.
Jan 8, 2013 11:24 PM - Ross H: Thanks, all! This was a lot of fun!

James - FYI, this is a pretty short mod, we finished tonight (they RP'd through one combat, and I skipped the final encounter so we wouldn't need a second session, but still pretty short).

I think I may post a D&D Next game sometime soon to try out, if y'all are interested!
Jan 8, 2013 6:18 PM - Zach: On my way
Jan 7, 2013 1:17 PM - James L: The best way to enter the building is from the corner of 53rd and Lexington. From the sidewalk you'll see stairs going down, there's glass revolving doors, enter there and go towards the center of the building.
Jan 7, 2013 1:04 PM - Ross H: Excellent question! CitiCenter. I think everyone but OgreHombre knows the venue and me. Ogre, it's a large atrium at 53rd and Lexington. Just look around for people with dice.
Jan 7, 2013 11:49 AM - Zach: where is this one happening? I feel like it's been asked and answered already but I don't see it at first glance through all the comments below.
Jan 4, 2013 7:30 PM - Ross H: No worries! I'm not sure if this is exactly the letter of the law, but you get 100gp plus one magic item. Honestly, I just usually grab whatever basic non-magical equipment I need without paying much attention to the cash - armor, weapon, adventurer's kit - and only pay attention to how much I'm spending if I want anything out of the ordinary. Basic idea is to limit access to magical items, not to make you worried you can't afford arrows.
Jan 4, 2013 7:19 PM - Connolly206: Ross, Sorry I am killing you with Questions here, but i'm trying to get it right. It appears as if we just get to pick a magic item and just have it. The cheapest +1 item is 4 times more than the 100g we are allotted, so I am assuming that we just get that. What else do we have that doesnt subtract from our 100g?
Jan 4, 2013 5:38 PM - Ross H: Sure, you can spend your 100g (note that the houserules give you 100 gold no matter what level you start at, don't use the "character appropriate" level of gold) on whatever you'd like.

For the backgrounds (James, chime in if you're listening), I think you're only allowed backgrounds that give a skill training or bonus to a skill, nothing that does more than that. So yes, I'd say change it.

Thanks - everyone, please do take a look at the house rules! They're pretty simple.
Jan 4, 2013 5:24 PM - Connolly206: Great that list is helpful. Also I used the Excess gold to buy some items (Arrows, a thieves kit, etc) I assume that's okay as it doesn't seem prohibited in the rules, but naturally I wanted to check again. Sorry if these are kind of basic questions.
One more thing about the background, the rules say "No Backgrounds that let you use WIS or INT for HP (Thay and Impultir)" the one I have now uses Dex instead of con for my HP. I kind of feel like that basically so I should switch. Thoughts?
Jan 4, 2013 5:00 PM - Ross H: Take a look at the campaign game rules: http://rpgconnect.org/popup_instruct_SE.html At level 2, you should get 1 common magical item of your level or less, everything else is non-magical. This means you get one +1 item (probably your main weapon).

Backgrounds are fine; themes are not.
Jan 4, 2013 4:57 PM - Connolly206: Ross, on the char builder when I level up my dude and hit the "add gear for me" button, it gives me several +1 items, my bow, armor, and an amulet. Reading the FAQ it seems like that's allowed, but I thought I'd clear it with you. Also in terms of Character backgrounds can we add or no? My wild elf was going to go with born under a bad sign, which cause him to be expelled from the society, which is why he is looking for a party.
Jan 4, 2013 4:07 PM - Brad Shaw: Hey! I'm still in. I will make some type of striker. Haven't had a chance to make a character yet. Leaning towards either a monk or a mage. I will let you know as soon as I decide.
Jan 4, 2013 3:40 PM - Ross H: OgreHombre, I made you a dwarf knight: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25274/Vistra.pdf Let me know if you have any questions!
Jan 4, 2013 3:33 PM - Zach: ignore my last post...i'm an idiot.
Jan 4, 2013 3:06 PM - Connolly206: Okay if I'm confirmed striker I'm going ranger so I can dpr the hell out of things.
Does anyone need a mini? Since I've been laid up I've been painting a bunch for fun.
Jan 4, 2013 3:01 PM - Ross H: Level 2, please! I don't know what a d4 is in this context - I don't do LFR. At this point we have confirmed a bladesinger (controller), bard (leader), avenger or ranger (striker), and some manner of defender for ogrehombre, so fit in with that - probably another striker would be an easy fit?

Also, Brad, are you still in? What're you playing?
Jan 4, 2013 1:29 PM - Lisa: Hi. Ross, did you want lvl 1 or lvl 2 char? Is this a type of d4, like LFR? I'll bring one of each type of character (striker, leader, defender, controller) and then whatever ends up being needed I'll do.
Jan 3, 2013 12:31 PM - ogrehombre: Thanks, Ross. i have the red box, so I've looked over that as well as a few other books and sites. Anything in particular you recommend i read? as far as character, I was just going to be a dwarf of some sort (I guess warrior would be the most straightforward, but I'm open to suggestion for a good first choice).
Jan 2, 2013 4:28 PM - Ross H: OgreHombre, sure thing - I'll put together a character for you (I'll try to keep it simple). Have you read over the rules, etc?
Jan 2, 2013 2:28 PM - Rob R: So we can use a defender and we would then have the four roles covered. Anything after that would be gravy. Though striker-tasting gravy is always nice.
Jan 2, 2013 2:08 PM - Zach: haha, that works nice then since leaders fill the healer role.
Jan 2, 2013 2:06 PM - Connolly206: Zach if you are going to be a leader I will do the Striker. unless someone else really wants to be a striker, in which case I can pick something else. The only type im not crazy about is healer
Jan 2, 2013 12:50 PM - ogrehombre: I'm open to suggestions for characters. This will be my first game, so if the offer of help on character creation is still good, Ross, I'd appreciate it.
Jan 2, 2013 12:40 PM - Zach: I'll be bringing a leader (bard). He has a special hatred of Goblins...
Jan 2, 2013 12:38 PM - Connolly206: I can do a striker (Avenger or Ranger) as my first choice, or a Leader Rune priest as my second choice (any of these would be fine) if none of those work let me know and I can change to something else.
Jan 2, 2013 12:12 PM - Zach: so what's everyone bringing? that way we don't have what happened last time and end up without a role filled.
Jan 1, 2013 10:09 PM - Matt L.: no problem.
Jan 1, 2013 7:55 PM - Ross H: Matt - not a continuation of a previous campaign, but was offered initially with the idea that it'd be targeting new folks to the site (specifically people who'd played in my previous introductory game). I'd kind of like to stick with that group, if you don't mind too much?
Jan 1, 2013 5:16 PM - Matt L.: Is this a continuation of a previous campaign? I just realized after I clicked commit that it might be. Don't want to nudge out anyone who was in the previous campaign.
Jan 1, 2013 2:36 PM - Ross H: OK, I think it sounds like there's at least rough consensus that Tuesdays would work well. I hope that works for the rest of you. So, I'm going to move this to Tuesdays. Looking forward to it! Let me know if you need help making a character.
Dec 31, 2012 8:11 PM - Zach: Tuesdays work fine, especially if it's only gonna be 2 of them.
Dec 31, 2012 11:12 AM - Rob R: Deleted my previous comment. Can only do Tuesday because of Fire Giant game.
Dec 31, 2012 1:34 AM - Connolly206: Both work for me
Dec 31, 2012 12:59 AM - Lisa: I would rather do Tuesday.
Dec 30, 2012 10:52 PM - Ross H: Ok all, we're coming up on this. A couple things: I'd like to switch this to Tuesdays or Wednesdays if that's not going to cause too much disruption. Will either work for folks? We should only need two weeks, third is just insurance. Also, can you just confirm you're in? And let me know if you need help making a character!
Dec 21, 2012 8:54 AM - Connolly206: Hey guys, I have a bunch of 4 edition books in PDF I'm happy to bring them on a disk if you want, just let me know beforehand.
Dec 8, 2012 4:08 PM - Connolly206: Ross good tip on subscribing to wizard.com great resource and the Char builder is a ton of fun.
Dec 5, 2012 7:35 AM - Connolly206: Great time last night, If you are new (as I was) you couldn't ask for better than Ross as a first time GM. Cant wait for round 2.
Dec 5, 2012 1:00 AM - Ross H: Goblins and pirates and treasure! TREASURE! What more do you need to know??
Dec 5, 2012 12:59 AM - Ross H: If there's sufficient interest, I'd like to run this as a low-level game (new players welcome!) in January. I can be somewhat flexible with timing, so let me know if you're interested but these aren't the best times.
