D&D Next - Mines of Madness
Cost: $0.00
Level: 3

First Session: Monday -- May 6th, 2013 -- 9:53 AM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 4-6 sessions

Description:
Mines of Madness is a rollicking D&D® adventure designed for use with the D&D Next playtest packet, which you can download for free at dndnext.com. The adventure is intended for four 3rd-level characters, created using the rules in the playtest packet. The Mines of Madness is a fictional adventure location (aren’t they all?) first introduced in Steve Kurtz’s web comic PvP, as a loving tribute to the classic D&D “dungeon crawls” of old. check out www.tabletitans.com

This adventure brings the adventure location to life, allowing D&D fans at PAX East 2013 to experience the Mines of Madness for themselves. Let us begin by saying: This is not a fair test of the players’ abilities. The dungeon is tragically stacked in the DM’s favor and built to frustrate, maim, humble, and ultimately kill adventurers. But if the players band together and use their brains, with a little luck their characters might survive to tell the tale of how they descended into the Mines of Madness in search of the Forever Stone and prevailed. What’s the Forever Stone? We’re glad you asked. . . .

The wizard Abracadamus hid the Forever Stone in the darkest depths of a failing mine, coerced monsters into serving as guardians, and rigged the dungeon with traps galore. Then he died, as all good wizards do. Many heroes have fallen prey to the Forever Stone’s lure of immortality. To date, only one stalwart band has plunged into the Mines of Madness and lived to tell the tale. You think you’re better than them? You think you got what it takes to grab life by the stones and conquer the dungeon that won the 2012 Gygaxian Award* for Bonecrushing Awesomeness? We seriously doubt it, but go ahead . . . prove us wrong!

For creating characters, you start at level 3, with 150gp, and no magic items. Or use a pregen.

May 16, 2013 10:49 AM - AVacc: Lisa: that's awesome
May 15, 2013 4:31 PM - Lisa: Thanks for running it, Art. Thanks for playing, peep. If anyone's interested, I wrote a one-act play that's going up in the "Spring One Act Play Competition" next week. May 20-24 at 6:30. $20 Manhattan Repertory Theatre 303 W. 42nd Street at 8th Avenue, on the 6th Floor. If interested, google the theatre for more details.
May 15, 2013 10:32 AM - AVacc: thanks for the kind words all. I had a total blast running this. You missed some stuff at the beginning but getting trapped in the cave at the end was the kicker as you did not get the the "end" of the adventure :)))
May 15, 2013 10:22 AM - Capt_Dan: Art, great job running, that was good fun. FYI everyone, we 'scored' 150 out of 1000 on the games scoring system... So we missed a bunch of stuff!
May 15, 2013 9:34 AM - Tracy: Thanks again for running! Damn we were so close. And we would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling coins!
May 14, 2013 11:37 AM - AVacc: Correct. 7pm at CitiCenter
May 14, 2013 11:34 AM - Connolly206: So I'm confirming today at 7:00. At citi center? Is that correct?
May 12, 2013 1:02 PM - AVacc: Very well - we will run on Tuesday. Sorry for the trouble, folks.
May 10, 2013 3:17 PM - Rob R: Art, if you run on Tuesday, I'll survive. Otherwise, it starts the chain reaction of pushing back the other Monday games
May 10, 2013 1:21 PM - Rob R: Sorry - for me Tues, Thurs & Fri are nogo on a weekly basis.
May 10, 2013 1:17 PM - T Michael: I had a blast last week and enjoy AVacc, the table, and the new rules, but next week is tough for me. So please feel free to go with whatever works for everyone and I am ok dropping out and letting someone else take over the super-amazing elf wizard.
May 10, 2013 12:20 PM - AVacc: Yeah - turns out I cant do Wednesday... What about Thursday?
May 10, 2013 12:19 PM - Rob R: TO be clear, I can do Wednesday (just not Tuesday). Though either day will cause at least one person to miss out (not knowing T Michael's status)
May 8, 2013 8:47 PM - Tracy: Either work for me.
May 8, 2013 7:41 PM - Capt_Dan: Can do either.
May 8, 2013 6:05 PM - Rob R: Aaack - I can't do Tuesday.
May 8, 2013 4:08 PM - Lisa: I vote Tuesday. (Though I can do Wednesday)
May 8, 2013 4:08 PM - Connolly206: I can do tuesday, not wed
May 8, 2013 4:02 PM - AVacc: Guys - soooo sorry but something came up at work I cant get out of - I moved this to Tuesday but I can also do Wed if that is better for every one.
May 8, 2013 10:57 AM - Capt_Dan: Art, great job - i'm really loving this. I have not had as much fun as that Turn undead in quite a while, particularly in a double team with the Wizard! very sure 4e is on the way out...
May 7, 2013 9:27 PM - Connolly206: Yes, that was really fun. I haven't played too many games where the puzzle is as important as the blade. Very well done, and run. Thanks
May 7, 2013 11:39 AM - Tracy: Awesome fun last night everyone! Thanks Art!
May 6, 2013 1:09 PM - Rob R: That's what I though I read somewhere too - no specialties does not equal no feats.
May 6, 2013 12:28 PM - AVacc: I just read what I wrote - I did not mean to say that being precise is not fun... Just that it is not going to buy you much in this particular case :) You are all unfairly out matched. Hahhahahahahhaahahaha
May 6, 2013 12:23 PM - AVacc: As I said - custom characters are OK - Feel free to use my suggested method or the more precise method James showed. Since my style of play / DMing is more focused on the fun of it all rather than the precise number of a hit, you will find either works perfectly will for this instance... I have one printed copy of each pre-gen in case anyone needs one.
May 6, 2013 12:16 PM - Xerek: I do wonder if the cap at 15 for base stats is intentional though, any thoughts?
May 6, 2013 12:12 PM - Xerek: I'd like to pipe in and give some support to James. This is all a playtest still so there are lots of rules clarifications and missing stuffs. My understanding of the specialties And feats issue is basically, specialties are there for quicker char creation and some extra role play value add. They are merely prechosen feats. If the players want to customize or choose from scratch, they are welcome to and the rules for that are provided.
May 6, 2013 11:42 AM - Rob R: That being said, DMs can get bad info just like anyone else.
May 6, 2013 11:41 AM - Rob R: I tend to listen to my DM - "AVacc: So how would you do it? I also think it is worth remembering that the pre-gens are tailored to this adventure and it is not meant to be a serious study of the game but rather a funny tribute to old school dungeons..."
May 6, 2013 11:15 AM - Rob R: Also, I though specialties were optional. I thought the character creation guide explained how to pick your feats assuming you weren't playing with specialties. or maybe it's the other way around. Feats w/o specialties are optional? My head hurts........
May 6, 2013 11:12 AM - James L: They aren't special to this mod. They are the exact same pregens that have been included in the playtests since March, with same powers and feats and everything. Simply leveled up level 3. They are the same as the level 4 pregens for "Storm over Neverwinter" also.
May 6, 2013 11:09 AM - Rob R: This is why it's easier to just stick to the pre-gens. They were supplied for this mod specifically. The idea is to test out the system and have fun (I guess have fun first and test out the system 2nd).
May 6, 2013 11:08 AM - Capt_Dan: Okay, that explains a lot; I was looking at the cleric and saw the skills and HP but couldn't account for them in the build. Using the straight creation rules, you can still tweak the char builds. Example - the cleric has 11 dex and 13 cha. It can be 10 & 14 legally, and now you have an extra +1 on cha.
May 6, 2013 10:51 AM - James L: The pregens are made with the standard character generation rules, that's all I'm saying. And forcing everyone to start with no Specialties ("Feats") and "average" Hit Points would make them all weaker than the pregens.
May 6, 2013 10:46 AM - James L: So the Elf Ranger with a d10 Hit Die. would be 10 at first level plus (5.5) rounded to 6 at levels 2 and 3. Plus his CON modifier at each level. His CON modifier is +2. So normally his Hit Points would be 10+2 + 6+2 + 6+2 = 28. He's got Toughness so he gets another +3 so his HP are 31.
May 6, 2013 10:46 AM - James L: Also, the proper way to do Hit Points is Maximum of the Hit Die at first level. Then take the average (rounded up) at higher levels. Plus CON modifier at each level.
May 6, 2013 10:45 AM - AVacc: So how would you do it? I also think it is worth remembering that the pre-gens are tailored to this adventure and it is not meant to be a serious study of the game but rather a funny tribute to old school dungeons...
May 6, 2013 10:40 AM - James L: The others are very subtle. The Ranger, Wizard, and Cleric, all have Toughness and Superior Skill Training as their feats. It's just not written. If you check their HP you'll see it. Also, they all have 6 trained skills when you only start with 4 unless you take Superior Skill Training as a feat.
May 6, 2013 10:39 AM - James L: I hate to chime in a little late. You say no "Specialties" but all specialties do mechanically is choose your feats for you. The pregens all have "feats" Some are more obvious than others. The Dwarf Fighter has Charge and Cleave as his feats. Rogue is a Treasure Hunter and has Open Locks and Toughness as his feats. he wouldnt have Open Locks any other way.
May 5, 2013 9:54 PM - AVacc: If you are not using the pre-gens (which is recommended) use average Hit Points and DO NOT take a specialty.
May 5, 2013 9:53 PM - AVacc: No need for backups (You WILL die but the adventure contemplates this - mewhahaha)
May 5, 2013 7:48 PM - Capt_Dan: Art, I saw that we can make/tweak chars below - what about specialities? Pre-gens don't have them, and it's effectively a power boost.
May 5, 2013 7:43 PM - Lisa: On the same note, I'm playing this Next Rogue in a Neverwinter campaign. Mind if I tweak it a bit? There's a few things about it that bug me. (Wasn't sure if you changed your mind about not using pre-gens)
May 5, 2013 7:34 PM - Connolly206: AVacc, should we bring back ups?
Apr 29, 2013 11:40 PM - AVacc: Please remember this is a DM challenge. Expect it to be deadly and there's no crying in Dungeons and Dragons.
Apr 29, 2013 11:38 PM - AVacc: Okay, folks. Sorry for all the confusion. This is back to the original schedule. We will start next week..
Apr 28, 2013 12:24 PM - AVacc: Fixed.... Guess it did not take the first time :)
Apr 28, 2013 12:19 PM - Capt_Dan: Yes. I may struggle to meet you guys on NYE, '69. My Delorean's still in the shop.
Apr 28, 2013 10:41 AM - AVacc: OK - Moved out one week. Dan, can you adjust yours?
Apr 28, 2013 10:20 AM - Rob R: That's fine by me.
Apr 26, 2013 11:09 AM - T Michael: Fine with me
Apr 25, 2013 10:09 PM - Connolly206: its your game... we are just freeloaders. fine by me
Apr 25, 2013 10:05 PM - AVacc: Does anyone mind if we push this out a week? The Glitter dust game got pushed out a little...
Apr 23, 2013 9:33 PM - AVacc: It was ran as one session at PAX... This will run as two. Hopefully there will be many iterations. This is a fun little puzzle... We can riff on this thing for a long time :))
Apr 23, 2013 9:16 PM - James L: I don't think this will spoil anything, but there are listed over 30 encounters in this adventure. Even knowing D&D Next is faster do you think 2 sessions is enough time? I say that because there are modules being scheduled to start right after this.
Apr 21, 2013 7:18 PM - Connolly206: Done and done. I'm going to paladin the hell out of this B
Apr 21, 2013 7:16 PM - Capt_Dan: Traded - You can be the dwarf Paladin.
Apr 21, 2013 6:33 PM - Connolly206: ill take the cleric, but will trade if anyone wants, im not an experienced healer
Apr 21, 2013 6:02 PM - Seth: I'll take the cleric in that game! Never played one, always wanted to
Apr 21, 2013 6:00 PM - Seth: Dan, I joined your game. It runs May 20, right?
Apr 21, 2013 5:59 PM - Capt_Dan: Fighter, paladin, ranger and wizard are gone, though I am happy to swap (I am the dwarf paladin).
Apr 21, 2013 5:58 PM - Capt_Dan: Folks, a reminder - The PCs are Dwarf Fighter, Dwarf Paladin, Elf Ranger, Elf Wizard, Halfling Rogue, and Human Cleric. Pick from this list, and use the pre-gen.
Apr 21, 2013 5:57 PM - Connolly206: You can download the play test packet here: https://www.wizards.com/dnd/dndnext.aspx. Next is much more simple to use so you shouldn't have too much difficulty making a character. I am not the most experienced person in this group so if any of the vets here see anything wrong in my advice please feel free to correct me.
Apr 21, 2013 5:56 PM - Capt_Dan: This module uses pre-gen characters, and this instance is full. If you look at the campaign game list, this adventure is up again (i'm running it) and you can join that. All you have to do is turn up, but please read the playtest ruled first!
Apr 21, 2013 5:53 PM - Seth: Thanks Connolly. Is there a way I can make a character for this module? Would really love to play.
Apr 21, 2013 5:46 PM - Connolly206: Hey Seth, if you think you want to get back into playing you should check out the builder found here: https://www.wizards.com/dnd/tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/characterbuilder

There is a membership fee, but its not much and well worth it if you plan on playing.

This game however is from the next packet so it won't work for here (unles there is a next generator on there i have missed) but for most others it will be fine, plus it will be a great way to reintroduce yourself to the game.
Apr 21, 2013 5:34 PM - Saj: Awesome Dan
Apr 21, 2013 5:13 PM - Seth: Sorry to be such a newbie... what's the easiest way for me to create a character? Used to play a lot but haven't in a long time.
Apr 21, 2013 4:59 PM - Capt_Dan: Hello, standby peeps - you need to join my game, if you want in..!
Apr 19, 2013 10:56 AM - AVacc: Sweet! Thanks Dan
Apr 19, 2013 10:52 AM - Capt_Dan: Everyone who hasn't made this game - i've put up a second one, running the weeks after (so I don't spoil myself!)
Apr 5, 2013 12:23 PM - Connolly206: thanks matt, but ill wait. I don't really want to bump until I have GMd a game myself. I actually am putting up a gamma game soon, and once I feel like I've run a game for everyone else I will feel differently about jumping in.
Apr 5, 2013 12:20 PM - AVacc: I wasn't planning on any but if folks have some house rule they want I am happy to work it out.
Apr 5, 2013 12:19 PM - Matt L.: Yea, no worries Connolly. If you want to play, I won't mind. There'll be more opportunities in the future and this just gives me more of an incentive to be a better and more involved D&D player.
Apr 5, 2013 12:13 PM - James L: I also want to make it very clear to AVacc. There should be no "houserules", unless everyone agrees to them, unanimously.
Apr 5, 2013 12:11 PM - James L: I might jump in depending on baby situation, and mother-in-law situation.
Apr 5, 2013 12:09 PM - Capt_Dan: Just to save James the bother, if you have points you are very welcome to use them to secure your seat; that's how the system works.
Apr 5, 2013 12:05 PM - Connolly206: If anyone drops count me in, but I don't want to take anyone's spot so I'm just going to stay on this interested list.
Apr 5, 2013 12:01 PM - T Michael: As long as you "have a plan", everything will be ok.
Apr 4, 2013 10:35 PM - Capt_Dan: "I'll cover you from here..."
Apr 4, 2013 2:23 PM - Tracy: Quick! Somebody get that paladin a bow!
Apr 4, 2013 1:32 PM - Rob R: Wait, what's wrong with my defender.......... : )
Apr 4, 2013 12:52 PM - Capt_Dan: Ha! I thought that the other day. No problem at all, now we can be safe that conventional Defender tactics will win out...
Apr 4, 2013 11:48 AM - T Michael: Capt Dan, thank you and I would like to take you up on your gracious offer for the swap.
Apr 4, 2013 11:32 AM - Capt_Dan: T Michael, knowing your RP preferences, I'm quite happy to swap chars if you'ld like.
Apr 2, 2013 5:49 PM - AVacc: I am open to custom builds but I have read that the pre-gens are tweaked to the adventure...
Apr 2, 2013 2:50 PM - AVacc: Also this is a DM challenge. In other words, I am going to try to kill you all dead... Mewhahahahhaa!!!
Apr 2, 2013 2:50 PM - Matt H: Art: Are the pre-gens an integral part of this, or are you open to custom-built PCs?
Apr 2, 2013 2:49 PM - AVacc: Matt L - There is room for 6 if you wish to join us.
Apr 2, 2013 2:36 PM - Matt L.: oh so jealous
Apr 2, 2013 11:14 AM - AVacc: The PCs are Dwarf Fighter, Dwarf Paladin, Elf Ranger, Elf Wizard, Halfling Rogue, and Human Cleric
Apr 2, 2013 9:30 AM - AVacc: This mod comes with pre-gen characters - you can get them by downloading the package at http://www.dndnext.com - if anyone needs one let me know and I will get it to you.
Apr 1, 2013 2:40 PM - Rob R:
