D&D Encounters Season 14 - Search for the Diamond Staff
Cost: $0.00
Level: 4

First Session: Monday -- February 3rd, 2014 -- 7:00 PM
[Eastern Time]

Approx. Length: 3-4 sessions

This is the 14th season of D&D Encounters. This season can be run in either 4th edition, or D&D Next. Make sure the DM tells you which rules he is using. There were meant to be 9, 90 minute sessions. That means they can probably be finished in 3 sessions. This takes place right after events in the GameDay "Vault of the Dracolich"

4E Players start at 4th level You start with one level 5 magic item, one level 4 magic item, and one level 3 magic item only one of which can be "rare", and 840gp to spend on other items with a maximum of 2 consumable items.
If 4E, you may use any source to create a character, Essentials or non-Essentials. Everything is allowed. "Themes" are also allowed.

In D&D Next, you start at level 4, with 150gp, and no magic items. You can use the latest packet to create a character.

The Diamond Staff of Chomylla, an artifact with the power to unlock the mysteries of an ancient elven civilization, has at long last been found. When orcs steal the staff, though, it’s up to a group of heroes to stop them. Why orcs should want the staff is anyone’s guess, and the quest to find the truth might well lead the adventurers across the Dalelands and into the depths of the lost library-vaults of Uvaeren.

Feb 25, 2014 12:38 PM - Kyle: Pete, the place is called Clarkson's corner, the address is 4 Grayrock Rd, Scarsdale
Feb 25, 2014 7:05 AM - Kyle: Guys, the game was alot of fun. Thanks for playing and I'll see you next time. Lisa, I'll send you some ideas for the module you're making. Pete, I'll post the address of the place in Scarsdale that my new Thursday game is to see if you can make it. Keep an eye out!
Feb 24, 2014 1:51 PM - Matt: I can email you my character sheet if it'd be helpful.
Feb 24, 2014 1:13 PM - Kyle: Dave, no problem being a little late. 730 actually helps me out alot. Lisa and Pete, lets plan on a 715-730 start and Dave can get right in. Matt, sorry you have to bow out, but these things happen. I actually have an extra level 6 on me (for my wed night game) so we can use that as an npc/pc for the party. You guys will DEFINATELY die with only 3. We'll work it out, unless one of you knows someone who can come to the game and sub in. See you guys there!
Feb 24, 2014 12:14 PM - Matt: Hi all, I'm really sorry, but I think I'm out indefinitely. Work has gotten nuts and I can't guarantee being available before 9 pm any day for at least the foreseeble future.
Feb 23, 2014 10:08 PM - Dave: I might be a tad bit late tomorrow. I have an appointment for my back that might make me a half-hourish late. However, my commute might go well and I could be there on time.
Feb 23, 2014 7:11 PM - Kyle: Hey guys sorry for the last minute post, but don't forget to level up to 6. See you tomorrow!!
Feb 16, 2014 4:22 PM - Matt: Sounds good, thanks everyone. Enjoy the long weekend!
Feb 16, 2014 9:44 AM - Kyle: I think we should just hold off and play the last session next monday. Enjoy the holiday guys and I'll see you next week!
Feb 15, 2014 10:24 PM - Lisa: Been thinking about snowboarding monday...I would get there late if I do.
Feb 15, 2014 7:55 PM - Peter: So, I don't know how Lisa feels, but it sounds like we're ok with Matt heading out of town? Matt it's up to I guess.
Feb 14, 2014 6:53 PM - Dave: I'd love to play Monday, but I won't be too bent out of shape if you go out of town.
Feb 14, 2014 6:25 PM - Peter: I am fine with playing Monday, but if people want to take a vacation I won't argue against a week.
Feb 13, 2014 12:06 PM - Kyle: I was planning on the game going on, but it's up to you guys. Can everyone make it? Delaying one week is not out of the question so I'll leave it to all of you.
Feb 13, 2014 11:31 AM - Matt: Hey all, are we still on for Monday given the holiday? Just wanted to check in beforehand, since if we're taking the week off I may head out of town.
Feb 9, 2014 8:57 PM - Kyle: Monday is fine with me, see you guys tomorrow!
Feb 9, 2014 7:03 PM - Matt: Sounds like there's a preference to stay with Monday. That work for you, Kyle?
Feb 9, 2014 5:13 PM - Dave: I cool with either
Feb 9, 2014 3:35 PM - Lisa: I prefer Monday, but can do Tuesday if necessary.
Feb 9, 2014 3:27 PM - Matt: I'm ok either way, but I need us to decide tonight.
Feb 9, 2014 3:01 PM - Peter: I'd prefer we stuck to tomorrow. I hear it's not going to be that bad tonight and Monday is supposed to be clear.
Feb 9, 2014 9:51 AM - Kyle: Hey guys the weather is supposed to be pretty shitty, is anybody up for moving this week to tuesday? This way noone has to deal with snow and stuff. If it's not doable for anyone I can make the game just a suggestion.
Feb 3, 2014 10:22 AM - Kyle: I'd say around (for ritual and component purposes) around 300. If a slight amount more is needed for components I'll allow it. Sarting equipment doesn't count towards the 300, weapons/implements, armor and adventurer's kit is standard. Any other little items like thieves tools or a climer's kit I'll allow. New games should have alot of leway for equip, not much shopping is done in game.
Feb 3, 2014 1:27 AM - Dave: could we get a gold amount so I know what rituals and components my char can have?
Feb 2, 2014 10:59 PM - Kyle: OK guys, after about 3pm tomorrow I won't have internet acess so if you need info or can't make it text me at 914-282-4722. See you tomorrow!
Feb 1, 2014 7:11 PM - Kyle: Pete, I'd allow it, an implement is an implement. As far as gold, it's really not relevant cuz there won't be any chances to shop really.
Feb 1, 2014 3:01 PM - Peter: I have a build question Kyle. My sorcerer currently has the Staff of Knives (can change from staff to dagger and vice versa & Critical is +1d6 damge per plus, or 1d12 damage per plus when used as a melee weapon) and Sorcerous Blade Channelling feat (any ranged sorcerer attack power through a dagger, you can use the power as melee attack.). The question is, if I use acid orb through the dagger form and it's a crit, will you allow the 1d12 bonus?
Feb 1, 2014 1:29 PM - Peter: Any gold?
Feb 1, 2014 7:58 AM - Kyle: You are allowed 2 magic items, nothing rare, level 4 or lower. Everyone starts with one healing potion.
Jan 31, 2014 10:49 PM - Peter: Can we clarify what we begin with? The description and what is said in the comments and rules contradict.
Jan 31, 2014 7:00 PM - Kyle: Might want to bring 4th and 5th level sheets in case you blow thru the game quickly.
Jan 31, 2014 6:59 PM - Kyle: The lobby is down the stairs on the corner (next to the subway station) thru the glass doors. It's kind of a lobby/food court kind of place. I should be there between 630-7. I'm fully prepped so we can start pretty quickly.
Jan 31, 2014 6:03 PM - Kyle: Ctit Center lobby, 53rd and Lex.
Jan 31, 2014 1:07 PM - Peter: Also, I messed up the character for committed. I will be playing a dragonborn sorcerer.
Jan 31, 2014 1:03 PM - Peter: Where is this taking place?
Jan 30, 2014 9:47 AM - Kyle: eco and Dave, I'm pretty sure slateskies will be continuing his game after this coming Sunday, but I'm not sure if he'll be posting it here. The delve this Sunday is kind of a way to keep the game going, hope you guys can come.
Jan 28, 2014 6:24 PM - Kyle: Guys I posted the one shot for Sunday, sign up if you're up for it. I posted it in 2 meetup groups, hope to get some action.
Jan 28, 2014 6:20 PM - Kyle: Sweet!!! Welcome aboard Lisa. I'm open to other locations, where is Au Bon Gout?
Jan 28, 2014 5:59 PM - Lisa: I think I can do this . . . so I committed. What are your feelings about Au Bon Gout?
Jan 28, 2014 7:01 AM - Kyle: Yeah, good point. I'll keep trying, I have alot of materials I can run, and the more people DM-ing the better. Hoping enough activity will inspire others giving me more opportunities to play.
Jan 27, 2014 7:30 PM - James L: there's two tables of other games going on which soaked up a lot of the players. Plus I did an informal survey and it seems like since we are in edition limbo, 4E interest got superseded by either D&D Next or Pathfinder. All the marketing is only for those two games. It has an effect.
Jan 27, 2014 7:00 AM - Kyle: I'll give it a few more days, but it looks like there's just not alot of interest. I'm going to be posting a one shot for SB Sunday (before the game) tomorrow. Slateskies can't DM and we need players for his game anyway. Put the word out for it and hopefully this game gets some takers. The story is actually pretty good, plus there are some great RP opportunities.
Jan 22, 2014 10:03 AM - Matt: Yeah I have experience with Encounters but am new here, so I was going with the rules in the gray box above that James mentioned, plus Kyle's DM authority. If I should be using something else just let me know, I want to be a good groupmate!
Jan 22, 2014 9:03 AM - Connolly206: well that shows what i know.......nada
Jan 22, 2014 8:39 AM - James L: on these Encounters seasons, and Lair Assault type games, they give out specific starting rules, so following them usually works out perfectly. It says only one Rare item, so the rest Uncommon should work out fine. I don't think there's many rare low level items anyway.
Jan 22, 2014 7:51 AM - Connolly206: Eco, the houserules on items can be found here: http://www.rpgconnect.org/popup_instruct_SE.html they are designed to do a very good job of keeping the game balanced for both players and GMs. Kyle is running the game so he can create his own rules, but in general having all your items be uncommon would be overpowered.
Jan 22, 2014 1:23 AM - Matt: Perfect, thanks. All uncommon so we're good.
Jan 20, 2014 6:44 AM - Kyle: No problem on the items, as long as they aren't rare.
Jan 19, 2014 11:49 PM - Matt: Thanks Kyle. I can't seem to change my character info on the Committed Adventurers list, so in case you can't see it I'm planning to run a Pixie Thief. Question about the items: assuming you're letting us pick our starting magic items, would it be alright if I grab two level 2's instead of the level 4? Can provide item info if you'd like.
Jan 15, 2014 6:42 AM - Kyle: I'm not familiar with Next yet either, this will be 4th edition. I didn't realize the game description said it could be either. As far as characters, as the game gets closer if you still don't have one we can work it out.
Jan 15, 2014 1:07 AM - Matt: I haven't played in nearly a year and no experience with Next (but happy to try it). Kyle if you want to assign me a character or type I'm happy to follow your lead.
Jan 13, 2014 6:53 AM - Kyle: No worriws Dave, no way I can be there before 645=700 so you're good. Also guys I'm open to a different night, just can't do Wednesdays.
Jan 12, 2014 8:40 AM - Kyle: Trying again to get a game going, this time level 4-6. Just 2 items, your level or lower (no rare). Any race/class/multiclass/hybrid/theme you want, just remember to post it before the game so I can figure out loot.
